Sarah drove through sleet with both girls asleep in the backseat.
\nMaisie leaned against the window clutching the stuffed rabbit she had won at the county fair two summers earlier. Ruby\u2019s velvet shoes\u2014because Christmas had rules\u2014were kicked off beneath her car seat, one sock already missing.
\nThe roads shimmered with dirty ice beneath streetlights.

\nHelen Vance valued appearances with religious intensity.
\nThe front porch lights were already on when Sarah pulled into the driveway at 5:12 p.m.
\nHer father, Richard, opened the door before she reached the steps.
