Part 2: The Folder in the Passenger Seat<\/h2>\n

I set the coffee down before she reached the porch.
\nNot because I was afraid.
\nBecause I recognized desperation when I saw it.
\nSarah climbed the steps too fast, breathing hard like she had been running long before she got out of the truck. Up close, she looked worse than she had from the porch. Pale skin. Red eyes. Dirt smeared along one sleeve of her jacket as though she had fallen somewhere and never bothered cleaning herself off afterward.
\n\u201cSarah,\u201d I said carefully.
\nShe looked over her shoulder toward the road again.
\n\u201cHas anyone been here?\u201d
\n<\/span>The question landed strangely.
\n\u201cWho?\u201d
\n\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d Her voice cracked. \u201cAnyone.\u201d
\nThe lake behind the house moved softly against the rocks. Somewhere farther down the shoreline, a loon cried once across the water.

\nSarah nodded too quickly.
\nLike she wanted to believe me but couldn\u2019t quite manage it.

Something about the way she held it reminded me instantly of hospital corridors and funeral homes and all the terrible documents people carry when life splits open.<\/p>\n

She realized I was looking at it and tightened her grip immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to come inside.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not Can I.<\/p>\n

Need.<\/p>\n

I stepped aside without answering.<\/p>\n

The house smelled faintly of cedar wood and the vegetable soup I had heated earlier but never eaten. Sarah moved through the kitchen fast, checking windows automatically before stopping near the table.<\/p>\n

That was when I knew this was not ordinary grief.<\/p>\n

Grief makes people slow.<\/p>\n

Fear makes them scan exits.<\/p>\n

I closed the door quietly behind us.<\/p>\n

\u201cSarah,\u201d I said again, softer this time. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

The sentence felt rehearsed because it had been. Eight months of repeating it to police officers, insurance adjusters, neighbors, distant cousins, and people at church who lowered their voices when they said Daniel\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

Sarah stared at me.<\/p>\n

Then she shook her head once.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

I felt cold all at once.<\/p>\n

She had volunteered there for years. Daniel too, during summers when he was younger.<\/p>\n

Sarah looked toward the window again before continuing.<\/p>\n

I felt irritation rise instantly.<\/p>\n
