She invited us.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span>Adrian turned toward me. \u201cWhat the hell did you do?\u201d<br \/>\nI lifted the black phone.<br \/>\nThe recording began to play.<br \/>\nMarjorie\u2019s voice echoed through the foyer, sharp and venomous.<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019ll learn obedience, or you\u2019ll lose everything.\u201d<br \/>\nThen Adrian\u2019s voice from the night before, low and cruel.<br \/>\n\u201cYou live in my house, use my name, spend my money.\u201d<br \/>\nHe lunged toward the phone.<br \/>\nThe officer stepped between us. \u201cSir, don\u2019t.\u201d<br \/>\nAdrian froze.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Rios opened the folder. \u201cAdrian Vale, you are being served with divorce papers, a protective order petition, notice of asset separation, and a civil complaint concerning financial coercion, fraud, and attempted asset misappropriation.\u201d<br \/>\nMarjorie\u2019s face turned white beneath her makeup.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is insane,\u201d Adrian said. \u201cShe\u2019s my wife.\u201d<br \/>\nI looked directly at him. \u201cNot for much longer.\u201d<br \/>\nThen he laughed, desperate and ugly. \u201cYou think anyone will believe you? Look at you. You covered it up.\u201d<br \/>\nI pulled a makeup wipe from my pocket.<br \/>\nSlowly, in front of everyone, I wiped beneath my eye.<br \/>\nThe bruise appeared beneath the foundation, dark purple and black.<br \/>\nAdrian stopped laughing.<br \/>\nThe officer\u2019s expression shifted instantly.<br \/>\nI said calmly, \u201cI went to a clinic this morning. Photos. Medical report. Time-stamped records. The staff already filed documentation.\u201d<br \/>\nMarjorie grabbed Adrian\u2019s arm. \u201cSay nothing.\u201d<br \/>\nToo late.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe provoked me!\u201d he shouted.<\/p>\n<p>The officer sighed. \u201cSir, I need you to come with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d Adrian stepped backward. \u201cNo, this is my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis house was purchased through my trust before our marriage. You signed the occupancy agreement without reading it because you called paperwork \u2018women\u2019s paranoia.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes snapped toward his mother.<\/p>\n<p>Marjorie whispered sharply, \u201cFix this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, I almost felt sorry for him.<\/p>\n<p>Almost.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Rios handed Marjorie another envelope. \u201cYou are also named in the civil complaint. We have copies of your messages instructing Mr. Vale to pressure, isolate, and financially control my client.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marjorie\u2019s pearls trembled at her throat. \u201cThose messages were private.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo was my pain,\u201d I replied. \u201cYou didn\u2019t respect that either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The financial investigator placed another folder on the entry table. \u201cWe also traced unauthorized transfers from the foundation account to companies connected to Mrs. Marjorie Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adrian stared at his mother.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in his life, he looked betrayed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marjorie\u2019s expression hardened. \u201cI did what was necessary for this family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cYou did what thieves do.
