For the next week, neither of us mentioned apartments.
\nThat surprised me.
\nIn the past, every difficult conversation between us had ended with one person trying to prove they were right.
\nThis time, it ended with both of us thinking.
\nOn Friday evening, he called.
\n“Can you meet me after work?”
\nThere was something different in his voice.
\nNot distant.

“I was looking at a spreadsheet.”<\/p>\n
“I should have been looking at you.”<\/p>\n
For several seconds neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n
Then he reached across the table.<\/p>\n
“I don’t want a relationship where one person wins every argument.”<\/p>\n
“I don’t either.”<\/p>\n
“I want one where we solve problems together.”<\/p>\n
I squeezed his hand.<\/p>\n
“So do I.”<\/p>\n
A month later, we toured another apartment.<\/p>\n
Not the luxury building he originally wanted.<\/p>\n
Not the cheapest place either.<\/p>\n
Something comfortably in between.<\/p>\n
It had old hardwood floors, a tiny balcony overlooking a park, and a kitchen barely big enough for two people to cook together.<\/p>\n
“I like this one,” I whispered.<\/p>\n
“So do I.”<\/p>\n
The rent was lower than we had originally planned.<\/p>\n
Instead of insisting on a 50\/50 split, we built a budget together.<\/p>\n
We each contributed the same percentage of our income.<\/p>\n
The numbers weren’t identical.<\/p>\n
The commitment was.<\/p>\n
We also agreed that every six months we’d review our finances together.<\/p>\n
If one of us earned more or less, we’d adjust.<\/p>\n
Not because anyone was keeping score.<\/p>\n
Because life changes.<\/p>\n
Partners adapt.<\/p>\n
Months passed.<\/p>\n
I found a better-paying job working for a local retailer’s corporate office.<\/p>\n
It wasn’t glamorous, but it came with benefits, predictable hours, and room to grow.<\/p>\n
He celebrated harder than I did.<\/p>\n
A year later, I received another promotion.<\/p>\n
My salary nearly doubled.<\/p>\n
The first thing I did was take him out to dinner.<\/p>\n

Years later, people sometimes asked us what the secret to sharing money was.<\/p>\n
We always gave the same answer.<\/p>\n
“We stopped asking what was mathematically equal.”<\/p>\n
“And started asking what was compassionate.”<\/p>\n
Because love isn’t measured by identical dollar amounts.<\/p>\n
It isn’t proven by who sacrifices more.<\/p>\n
And it certainly isn’t built by asking someone you love to choose between paying the rent and buying groceries.<\/p>\n
Real partnership isn’t about splitting everything down the middle.<\/p>\n
It’s about making sure both people can stand on solid ground\u2014together.<\/p>\n
Looking back now, I’m grateful we didn’t move in six months earlier.<\/p>\n

Not because we lacked commitment.<\/p>\n
