\nFat drops struck the apartment windows with a rhythm that seemed to count down the seconds.
\nNo one spoke.
\nThe tiny silver key rested in my palm.
\nThe unknown text message glowed on my phone.
\nOpen it tonight before they stop you.
\n<\/strong>Dr. Porter’s message sat directly above it.
\nDo not open the music box until you arrive in Boston.
\n<\/strong>Two instructions.
\nOnly one could be right.
\nI looked from the phone…
\n…to Margaret…
\n…to David.
\nThen I quietly asked the question that had been growing louder inside my head.
\n“Who wants to stop me?”
\nNeither of them answered immediately.
\nThat frightened me more than any answer could have.
\nFinally David spoke.
\n“People who have been waiting almost as long as we have.”
\nI folded my arms.
\n“I don’t want riddles.”
\n“I want the truth.”
\nDavid nodded.<\/p>\n

“You deserve that.”<\/p>\n

He reached into his briefcase again.<\/p>\n

This time he removed a thin leather notebook.<\/p>\n

Unlike the folders…<\/p>\n

This one looked old.<\/p>\n

The initials E.C.<\/strong> were pressed into the cover.<\/p>\n

“Evelyn’s research journal,” he said.<\/p>\n

“You have her journal?”<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n

“I have one of them.”<\/p>\n

“One?”<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

“There were six.”<\/p>\n

“And only one was ever found.”<\/p>\n

Found?<\/p>\n

The word echoed in my mind.<\/p>\n

“Found after what?”<\/p>\n

Margaret lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n

David answered quietly.<\/p>\n

“After the laboratory fire.”<\/p>\n

The room became silent again.<\/p>\n

“A fire?”<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

“Twenty-three years ago.”<\/p>\n

“It destroyed nearly everything.”<\/p>\n

“Equipment.”<\/p>\n

“Research.”<\/p>\n

“Computers.”<\/p>\n

“Laboratory records.”<\/p>\n

He hesitated.<\/p>\n

“It officially took Evelyn Carter’s life.”<\/p>\n

Officially.<\/p>\n

Another strange word.<\/p>\n

I noticed it immediately.<\/p>\n

“Officially?”<\/p>\n

He sighed.<\/p>\n

“There was never enough evidence to explain exactly what happened.”<\/p>\n

Frustration finally boiled over.<\/p>\n

“I am done with everyone saying they can’t tell me.”<\/p>\n

“Everyone keeps telling me I deserve answers.”<\/p>\n

“Then nobody answers!”<\/p>\n

Finally Dr. Porter whispered,<\/p>\n

“Are you holding Evelyn’s letter?”<\/p>\n

Another new word.<\/p>\n

Another mystery.<\/p>\n

“What archive?”<\/p>\n

Her answer made every person in the apartment look at one another.<\/p>\n

A black SUV sat across from my apartment building.<\/p>\n

Engine running.<\/p>\n

Headlights off.<\/p>\n

Two people inside.<\/p>\n

Watching the entrance.<\/p>\n

“They’ve been there since we arrived.”<\/p>\n

I frowned.<\/p>\n

“Who are they?”<\/p>\n

David answered quietly.<\/p>\n

“I don’t know.”<\/p>\n

“And that’s exactly what worries me.”<\/p>\n

The apartment buzzer suddenly rang.<\/p>\n

Everyone jumped.<\/p>\n

Once.<\/p>\n

Twice.<\/p>\n

Three times.<\/p>\n

Then my phone buzzed again.<\/p>\n

Unknown number.<\/p>\n

Only one sentence.<\/p>\n

They’re already inside your building.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I looked toward the apartment door.<\/p>\n

Almost immediately…<\/p>\n

Someone knocked.<\/p>\n

Three slow knocks.<\/p>\n

Completely different from before.<\/p>\n

Not impatient.<\/p>\n

Not aggressive.<\/p>\n

Almost…<\/p>\n

Polite.<\/p>\n

Knock.<\/p>\n

No one moved.<\/p>\n

Then a man’s calm voice came through the door.<\/p>\n

“Miss Thompson.”<\/p>\n

“My name is Detective Alan Reeves.”<\/p>\n

“I’d like to ask you a few questions regarding Evelyn Carter.”<\/p>\n

David Whitmore’s face turned white.<\/p>\n

He whispered only three words.<\/p>\n

“Don’t open it.”<\/p>\n

The detective spoke again.<\/p>\n

“I know you’re in there.”<\/p>\n

“We’re not here to arrest anyone.”<\/p>\n

“We’re here because someone broke into your parents’ house…”<\/p>\n

“…less than thirty minutes ago.”<\/p>\n

I felt my stomach drop.<\/p>\n

“My parents?”<\/p>\n

The detective continued.<\/p>\n

“The attic was completely destroyed.”<\/p>\n

“They were looking for something.”<\/p>\n

My hand instinctively tightened around the silver key.<\/p>\n

The detective’s next sentence froze every person in the apartment.<\/p>\n

“They didn’t find it.”<\/p>\n

“…which means they believe you have it.”<\/p>\n

The hallway fell silent.<\/p>\n

Then…<\/p>\n

Very softly…<\/p>\n

Almost too softly to hear…<\/p>\n

The detective added one final sentence.<\/p>\n

“And if they reach you before we do…”<\/p>\n

“…they won’t ask twice.”<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

Complete silence.<\/p>\n

Then, from somewhere inside the apartment…<\/p>\n

A soft mechanical sound echoed.<\/p>\n

Click.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Everyone turned toward the coffee table.<\/p>\n

Toward Evelyn’s old leather notebook.<\/p>\n

Its cover…<\/p>\n

…had opened by itself.<\/p>\n

Hidden inside the back cover…<\/p>\n

A tiny folded map had slowly slipped onto the floor.<\/p>\n

Across the top, in Evelyn Carter’s unmistakable handwriting, were six chilling words:<\/p>\n
