\nThe tiny piece of folded paper rested on the hardwood floor between us like it had been waiting twenty-two years for someone to notice it.
\nThe detective knocked again.
\nMore firmly this time.
\n“Miss Thompson?”
\n“I don’t have much time.”
\n“I strongly suggest you open this door.”
\nDavid Whitmore whispered,
\n“Don’t.”
\nMargaret whispered,
\n“Please…”
\n“…not yet.”
\nI looked from one frightened face to the other.
\nThen down at Evelyn’s journal.
\nSlowly…
\nI picked up the folded map.
\nThe paper was brittle.
\nThe edges had yellowed with age.
\nAcross the front, in Evelyn’s handwriting, were three simple words.
\nFor Sarah Only.
\n<\/strong>I unfolded it carefully.
\nIt wasn’t a road map.
\nIt was a blueprint.
\nAn old architectural blueprint.
\nAt first I didn’t recognize the building.
\nThen I noticed the seal printed in one corner.<\/p>\n

Harvard Medical School<\/strong><\/p>\n

Every muscle in my body tensed.<\/p>\n

“This…”<\/p>\n

“…is Harvard.”<\/p>\n

David nodded.<\/p>\n

“Yes.”<\/p>\n

My eyes scanned the faded corridors.<\/p>\n

Lecture halls.<\/p>\n

Research wings.<\/p>\n

Most of the blueprint had been crossed out in black ink.<\/p>\n

Down two flights of stairs.<\/p>\n

Past rooms that no longer existed.<\/p>\n

Finally stopping at a single location.<\/p>\n

Room B-19.<\/p>\n

Beneath it…<\/p>\n

One handwritten sentence.<\/p>\n

“If everything else is gone…”<\/strong><\/p>\n

“…begin here.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

There was another note.<\/p>\n

Smaller.<\/p>\n

Almost hidden in the margin.<\/p>\n

Do not trust anyone who already knows what’s inside.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I read it twice.<\/p>\n

Then a third time.<\/p>\n

Slowly…<\/p>\n

I looked around the apartment.<\/p>\n

David.<\/p>\n

Margaret.<\/p>\n

Professor Liang.<\/p>\n

Dr. Porter.<\/p>\n

Every one of them already knew more than I did.<\/p>\n

Margaret gasped.<\/p>\n

David stared at me.<\/p>\n

Neither confirmed it.<\/p>\n

Neither denied it.<\/p>\n

That was answer enough.<\/p>\n

The room tilted.<\/p>\n

I grabbed the back of a chair to steady myself.<\/p>\n

“No…”<\/p>\n

“My parents…”<\/p>\n

Margaret walked toward me slowly.<\/p>\n

“They are.”<\/p>\n

Her voice cracked.<\/p>\n

“They raised you.”<\/p>\n

“They loved you the best way they knew how.”<\/p>\n

I looked into her eyes.<\/p>\n

“Then why did they always look at me like…”<\/p>\n

“…like I reminded them of something they wanted to forget?”<\/p>\n

Margaret’s shoulders sagged.<\/p>\n

“Because every time your father looked at you…”<\/p>\n

“…he saw the woman he couldn’t save.”<\/p>\n

“What?”<\/p>\n

David finally spoke.<\/p>\n

“My father worked at Harvard?”<\/p>\n

“He was a firefighter.”<\/p>\n

The words hit me like a physical blow.<\/p>\n

“He was one of the first emergency responders.”<\/p>\n

“He carried survivors out.”<\/p>\n

“He searched until the building became too unstable.”<\/p>\n

“He searched for Evelyn.”<\/p>\n

“And?”<\/p>\n

David swallowed.<\/p>\n

“They never found her.”<\/p>\n

I remembered every time Dad refused to talk about fires.<\/p>\n

Every time he changed the channel whenever documentaries showed burning buildings.<\/p>\n

Every nightmare I’d heard him have as a child.<\/p>\n

I’d always assumed they came from ordinary rescue work.<\/p>\n

He looked directly into my eyes.<\/p>\n

“It’s a race.”<\/p>\n

Tears filled my eyes before I even realized they had formed.<\/p>\n

At the very top of the page…<\/p>\n

The only name written in red ink.<\/p>\n

Beneath it…<\/p>\n

A name that made David Whitmore suddenly lose all color in his face.<\/p>\n

He whispered,<\/p>\n

“No…”<\/p>\n

“That’s impossible.”<\/p>\n

I turned the paper toward him.<\/p>\n

“You know this person?”<\/p>\n

He didn’t answer.<\/p>\n

His knees slowly gave way.<\/p>\n

He sank into the nearest chair.<\/p>\n
