She was calm, precise, and missed nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey offered another plea,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of them?\u201d Lily asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven. The other four want trial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they offer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdmission of participation, surrender of devices, restitution, prison time, and written apologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked down at her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo apology letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana paused. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to read them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know. I don\u2019t want them written. They\u2019ll only say what helps them. I don\u2019t need fake regret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana nodded. \u201cThat is your right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked at me. \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could have told her I wanted every one of them buried under prison walls. I could have said Calvin deserved to wake up every morning to a cell door, and Marissa deserved to sit alone in the life she chose over her daughter.<\/p>\n<p>But this was not mine to own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you get to choose what gives you air,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She held my gaze, then turned back to Dana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo private deals. No apology letters. Everything on record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana made a note. \u201cThen we go forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first hearing lasted three hours.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin entered in a charcoal suit, thinner than in old photographs. His lawyer guided him like he was fragile. Brent did not look at Lily.
