Buckingham Palace announced on September 5, 2025, that the Duchess had died peacefully at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family. King Charles III, Queen Camilla and members of the Royal Family joined the Duke of Kent, their children and grandchildren in mourning her loss and remembering her lifelong dedication to music, charitable work and young people.

The Duchess was widely admired for a life of service that extended far beyond traditional Royal duties.

She became particularly known for her passion for music and her commitment to helping young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. In 2004, she co-founded Future Talent, a charity dedicated to supporting gifted young musicians who might otherwise lack the financial resources and opportunities needed to develop their abilities.

Her connection with music was deeply personal. After stepping back from official Royal duties, she famously worked as a music teacher in Hull, teaching children without publicly revealing her Royal identity. Her quiet approach to service became one of the most distinctive aspects of her later life.

The Duchess was also remembered for her compassion and warmth. She became particularly well known for comforting Czech tennis player Jana Novotná at Wimbledon in 1993, an emotional moment that reflected the empathy for which she was admired.

Her faith was equally important. In 1994, she became the first member of the British Royal Family in more than 300 years to convert to Roman Catholicism. Her religious convictions ultimately shaped the arrangements for her funeral.

A Historic Royal Funeral

The Duchess’s funeral took place at Westminster Cathedral on September 16, 2025, in accordance with her wishes.

The Requiem Mass was conducted by Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster, making it the first Catholic royal funeral in modern British history. King Charles III and members of the Royal Family attended the service alongside the Duke of Kent and members of the Duchess’s family.

Following the service, her coffin was taken to the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore, Windsor, for a private committal. Flags at official Royal Residences were lowered on the day of the funeral as a mark of respect.

A Legacy of Quiet Service

The Duchess of Kent chose a remarkably understated path during the later decades of her life.

Rather than seeking the spotlight, she devoted herself to teaching, music, charity and helping young people. Future Talent has continued the work she helped establish, supporting young musicians from low-income families and giving them opportunities to develop their talents.

Her death marked the passing of a distinctive member of the Royal Family—one who demonstrated that service does not always require a prominent public role.

Katharine, Duchess of Kent, leaves behind a legacy defined not by spectacle, but by music, compassion, education and quiet dedication to others.

For the Royal Family and the many people whose lives she touched, her contribution will be remembered long after the mourning period has ended.

The Royal Family has mourned the loss of Katharine, Duchess of Kent, following her death at the age of 92.
