\u201cThree nights ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard told me Sophia had apparently gone out late and ended up alone in a rough neighborhood several miles away.<\/p>\n
Someone attacked her in an alley.<\/p>\n

Injuries serious enough that the doctor believed whatever had happened lasted more than a few seconds.<\/p>\n

Richard had listed himself as Sophia\u2019s available family contact and told hospital staff I was overseas and unreachable.<\/p>\n

Someone had deliberately kept me out.<\/p>\n
I stepped into the hallway to call the detective assigned to the case.<\/p>\n
That was when I noticed a man sitting near the far wall.<\/p>\n

The hallway seemed to narrow around me.<\/p>\n

Samuel reached carefully into his backpack.<\/p>\n
He removed a plastic bag.<\/p>\n
Inside was a silver bracelet.<\/p>\n
Sophia\u2019s.<\/p>\n
I had given it to her on our fifth anniversary.<\/p>\n

There was a tiny scratch beside the clasp where she once caught it on our backyard gate.<\/p>\n

\u201cBehind your house.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe night she was taken to the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy were you there?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s an abandoned detached garage behind the property next to yours. I sleep there sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then Samuel said:<\/p>\n
\u201cI heard Sophia screaming.\u201d<\/p>\n
I felt sick.<\/p>\n

Samuel looked past me.<\/p>\n
His face changed.<\/p>\n

Richard had just stepped out of the elevator.<\/p>\n
The second Sophia\u2019s father saw Samuel standing beside me, every bit of color disappeared from his face.<\/p>\n
Samuel leaned close.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s the man who told police she was found in the alley.\u201d<\/p>\n
Richard froze.<\/p>\n
I looked at him.<\/p>\n
Then back at Samuel.<\/p>\n
I had never asked Richard who had found Sophia.<\/p>\n
Before I could say another word, Samuel pulled an old phone from his pocket.<\/p>\n
\u201cI took pictures that night.\u201d<\/p>\n
And when the first photograph appeared on the cracked screen, I realized Richard\u2019s lie was only the beginning…..<\/p>\n
