the heat in the house.

“What happened?”

Mason looked at his sister.

Lily’s eyes were still closed.

Her breathing was shallow but steady enough that I could see her chest moving.

Mason stepped closer.

“Can you put her somewhere safe?”

“I will.”

“Not the couch.”

“Why?”

He pointed toward the living room.

“The cameras.”

I froze.

“What cameras?”

Mason didn’t answer.

Instead, he pointed toward the ceiling.

I followed his finger.

At first, I saw nothing except the smoke detector.

Then I noticed the tiny black circle beside it.

My skin prickled.

I looked toward the kitchen.

Another one.

Then the hallway.

Another.

My son’s house suddenly looked different.

The furniture was the same.

The photographs were the same.

The children’s drawings were still taped to the refrigerator.

But now I was looking at the house through the eyes of a child who believed someone might be watching.

The dispatcher heard the silence and asked, “Sir, are you still there?”

“Yes.”

“Can you tell me what is happening?”

I looked at Mason.

He shook his head.

Not yet.

That was what his expression said.

Not yet.

So I told the dispatcher that I had discovered additional circumstances that made me concerned for the children’s immediate safety.

She told me responders were already on the way.

Then Mason whispered something that made me tighten my grip around the phone.

“They can hear us.”

“Who?”

He pointed toward the ceiling again.

“The people Dad doesn’t talk about.”

I stared at him.

“Who are they?”

“I don’t know.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“But Dad does.”

That was the moment I realized this wasn’t simply a story about a bad decision made by frightened parents.

Something had been happening in this house before Lily called me.

Something Mason had witnessed.

Something Brian had tried to make sure I wouldn’t investigate.

And something that apparently involved surveillance.

I carried Lily toward the living room but stopped before putting her down.

“Where is the safest place?”

Mason pointed toward the dining room.

“There aren’t any cameras there.”

I looked at the ceiling.

He was right.

Or at least, I couldn’t see one.

I placed Lily carefully on the dining room rug and folded a blanket beneath her head.

Then I knelt beside her.

“Lily?”

Her eyelids fluttered.

“Grandpa?”

“I’m here.”

Her lips moved.

I leaned closer.

“Don’t let Mason tell them.”

“Tell who?”

She opened her eyes.

For the first time since I had arrived, there was something in them besides fear.

Recognition.

She knew something.

And she was trying desperately to decide whether she could trust me with it.

“Tell me what?”

She looked toward Mason.

He was standing near the doorway.

“Tell Grandpa,” Mason said quietly.

Lily shook her head.

“No.”

“It’s okay.”

“No, Mason.”

Then she looked at me.

“Mom said Grandpa would make it worse.”

I felt as though someone had struck me.

“Your mother said that?”

Lily nodded.

“Before they left.”

“Why would she say that?”

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached weakly for my hand.

I took it.

Her fingers were hot.

“Grandpa,” she whispered, “they weren’t going to Florida.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“They weren’t going anywhere.”

Mason stepped into the room.

“They said they were going away.”

“But they didn’t,” Lily said.

“Where did they go?”

Neither child answered.

Then Mason looked toward the front door.

“They went to meet somebody.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where?”

“Dad said it was the last time.”

The phrase caught my attention.

“The last time for what?”

Mason’s face changed.

He looked suddenly much younger than ten.

“I don’t know.”

I waited.

He wiped his nose with the back of his hand.

“But I heard Dad talking.”

“What did he say?”

“He said if they didn’t fix it tonight, somebody would come for us.”

My heart seemed to stop.

“Somebody?”

Mason nodded.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did he say a name?”

He looked at Lily.

She whispered something.

Mason shook his head.

Then he said, “Seven.”

I frowned.

“Seven what?”

“I don’t know.”

He rubbed his eyes.

“Dad kept saying seven.”

The number meant nothing to me.

Not then.

But years later, I would remember exactly how casually it had been spoken in that room.

Seven.

At the time, I assumed it was part of something I didn’t understand.

A room number.

A time.

A code.

A number of people.

I had no idea that it was the first piece of a puzzle that would eventually explain why my son had lied to the entire family.

Sirens became audible outside.

Mason flinched.

Lily squeezed my hand.

“Are those the police?”

“Yes.”

“Don’t let them take us.”

“No one is taking you anywhere without me.”

I meant it.

The first responders arrived minutes later.

Everything happened quickly after that.

Questions.

Medical equipment.

Bright lights.

Footsteps.

People moving through rooms.

Someone examined Lily while another responder spoke with Mason.

I stayed close enough for both children to see me.

I answered every question honestly.

I told them about the phone call.

The medication.

The note.

The closet.

The cameras.

And what the children had told me.

When I mentioned the cameras, one of the responders immediately looked upward.

That reaction told me something.

He understood the significance.

A few minutes later, he asked me to step into the kitchen.

“There are several devices here,” he said carefully.

“Are they security cameras?”

“Some appear to be.”

“Do they belong to my son?”

“I don’t know yet.”

That answer bothered me.

“Then whose are they?”

He looked at me.

“That is what we’re trying to determine.”

I glanced toward the hallway.

Mason was sitting beside another responder.

He kept looking at the kitchen.

Not at the medicine.

Not at the note.

At the wall.

As if he expected something to happen.

I walked over.

“Mason.”

He looked up.

“Can I ask you something?”

He nodded.

“Who installed the cameras?”

“My dad.”

“When?”

He shrugged.

“A few months ago.”

“Why?”

“He said they were for safety.”

I looked toward the nearest device.

“Did he tell you who could watch them?”

Mason nodded.

“Dad.”

“Only your dad?”

Mason hesitated.

Then he shook his head.

“Sometimes Mom.”

“Anyone else?”

He didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

I crouched in front of him.

“Mason, you don’t have to protect anyone tonight.”

His eyes filled again.

“I wasn’t protecting them.”

“Then what were you doing?”

“I was trying to protect Lily.”

I glanced at his sister.

“What happened?”

Mason’s voice dropped.

“Mom gave Lily the medicine.”

The room seemed to narrow.

“Your mother?”

He nodded.

“Dad told her not to.”

I stared at him.

That made no sense.

“Why would your father tell her not to?”

Mason shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“What happened after she gave it to Lily?”

“Lily got sleepy.”

“How long?”

“I don’t know.”

“And then?”

“Mom told me to put her in bed.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Mason’s eyes moved toward the closet.

“Because Dad told me not to let anybody see her.”

I felt the blood leave my face.

“Who?”

“Anybody.”

“Why?”

“He said people were coming.”

“What people?”

Mason shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

I lowered my voice.

“Then why were you in the closet?”

“Because Mom put me there.”

That sentence landed harder than anything else he had said.

“Your mother locked you inside?”

He nodded.

“What did she tell you?”

Mason’s lower lip trembled.

“She said if Grandpa came, I wasn’t supposed to come out.”

I closed my eyes for a second.

My son had written the note.

His wife had apparently known I might arrive.

And yet they had left both children alone.

One drugged.

One locked in a closet.

The explanation they had given the family was already collapsing.

But I still couldn’t understand the cameras.

I couldn’t understand the number seven.

And I couldn’t understand why two adults would leave their children behind if they were afraid somebody might come for them.

Then one of the responders called my name.

“Sir?”

I turned.

He was standing beside the kitchen counter.

He held something in a clear evidence bag.

It was the handwritten note.

“We found something on the back.”

I walked closer.

“What?”

He turned it over.

There was writing on the reverse side.

I hadn’t seen it because the paper had been folded.

A second message.

Only three words.

SHE REMEMBERS EVERYTHING.

I stared at it.

“Who is she?”

The responder didn’t answer.

I looked toward Lily.

She was still being examined.

Her eyes were closed.

But as if she had heard my question from across the room, she opened them.

Her gaze found mine.

And then she slowly raised one trembling finger.

She wasn’t pointing at herself.

She was pointing toward the hallway.

Toward the closet.

I turned.

The closet door was open.

Nothing was inside.

Nothing except a child’s blanket, two boxes of old toys, and the empty space where Mason had been sitting.

Then I noticed something I hadn’t seen before.

A small square of wood near the floor looked different from the rest.

I walked closer.

There was a narrow seam around it.

A hidden panel.

I looked back at the responder.

“Did you know about this?”

He shook his head.

I crouched.

The panel had a tiny metal latch.

I touched it.

Before I could open it, Mason shouted from behind me.

“Don’t!”

I turned.

He was standing now.

His face had gone completely white.

“Why?”

Mason looked at Lily.

Then at me.

Then toward the responders.

“They said Grandpa wasn’t supposed to find that.”

“Who said?”

He didn’t answer.

“Who, Mason?”

He finally whispered:

“Dad.”

I looked down at the hidden panel.

My son had spent years in that house.

He had raised his children there.

He had told us it was simply a family home.

Yet there was a hidden compartment inside a closet where he had locked his ten-year-old son.

And now my grandson was terrified that I would open it.

I should have waited for the police.

I should have stepped away.

But then I noticed something sticking out from the edge of the panel.

A photograph.

Only a corner of it.

I carefully pulled it free.

It was old.

Older than the house.

Older than the children.

On the front were three people.

Brian.

Marissa.

And a man I had never seen before.

They were standing outside a building I recognized.

My stomach tightened.

It was the same medical clinic where my late wife, Carol, had received treatment during the final year of her life.

I turned the photograph over.

There was a date written on the back.

And beneath the date was a sentence that made me question whether my son’s lies had started long before Lily was born.

WE FOUND THE SEVENTH ONE.

I stared at the words.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

There was no greeting.

No explanation.

Just a photograph.

I opened it.

It showed Brian.

Alive.

Standing beside Marissa.

Both of them were outside a building.

But they weren’t in Florida.

They weren’t even close to home.

And behind them, barely visible through the glass doors, was someone I recognized immediately.

Someone who had supposedly been dead for six years.

My late wife’s younger brother.

And underneath the photograph was another message:

IF YOU WANT YOUR GRANDCHILDREN TO LIVE, DON’T TRUST THE POLICE.

I read it once.

Then again.

The room suddenly felt colder.

I looked toward the responders.

One of them was speaking quietly into his radio.

Another was examining the hidden panel.

Mason was watching me.

Lily was still lying on the floor, weak but conscious.

And I realized something terrifying.

Whoever had sent that message knew I had found the children.

They knew I had called the police.

And they knew about the hidden compartment.

Which meant someone had been watching the house.

Maybe through the cameras.

Maybe through something else.

I looked up at the tiny black lens in the ceiling.

Then I looked at the photograph again.

My hands began to shake.

Because if the photograph was real, there was only one explanation for the message.

Someone had been watching us from the moment I entered the house.

And they knew exactly what I was about to discover next.

The responder finally opened the hidden panel.

Inside was a small metal box.

He lifted it out.

There was no key.

No combination.

Just a strip of paper taped across the lid.

He read it Brian.

It wasn’t addressed to Marissa.

It was addressed to me.

The responder looked at me.

“Sir, do you know what this means?”

I couldn’t answer.

Because beneath those words was my name.

Not “Dad.”

Not “Grandpa.”

My full name.

Written in my son’s them.

And when the metal box finally opened, the first thing inside was a photograph of Carol.

My dead wife.

Taken three days before she died.

On the back, in handwriting I had never seen before, were six words:

Carol knew where the children came from.

I stopped breathing.

Because Carol had never told me she knew anything about the children.

And now, for the first time in six years, I had to consider a possibility I had never allowed myself to imagine:

My wife may have known the truth about my son long before I did.

And she may have been trying to tell me before she died….
