eyes, I saw the photograph.
The diner.
The rain.
The old veteran standing at the register.
Me sitting in the booth.
And those six words written across the back.
You were never supposed to notice him.
But there was something else I couldn’t stop thinking about.
The phone call.
The voice had sounded calm.
Too calm.
Not threatening.
Not angry.
Almost instructional.
As though whoever had called me believed I would follow orders simply because they had given them.
They were wrong.
At 0515, I got out of bed.
I shaved.
Put on a clean uniform.
Checked my weapon.
Checked it again.
Then I stood in front of the mirror and stared at myself.
I looked like the same Marine I had been the day before.
Same haircut.
Same uniform.
Same tired eyes.
But something had changed.
I no longer believed that the people around me were necessarily who they appeared to be.
At 0610, I left the barracks.
I didn’t tell my commander where I was going.
That decision bothered me.

But something told me that if someone had specifically instructed me not to tell General Hayes about the photograph, then telling my commander immediately might be exactly what they expected.

So I drove.

The morning sky was gray.

The roads were almost empty.

As I got closer to Norfolk National Cemetery, the feeling in my chest became heavier.

I kept checking my rearview mirror.

Nothing.

No dark sedan.

No suspicious vehicle.

No obvious tail.

Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I wasn’t alone.

At 0657, I pulled into the cemetery.

The gates were open.

The grounds were quiet.

Rows of white markers disappeared into the distance.

The place had a stillness that made every sound seem louder.

My boots sounded too heavy against the pavement.

I checked the photograph.

Section 4.

I started walking.

At 0701, I saw him.

A man standing beside one of the graves.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

Hands behind his back.

At first, I thought it was General Hayes.

Then he turned.

It wasn’t.

He was younger.

Maybe late fifties.

He looked at me without surprise.

As if he had known exactly when I would arrive.

“Corporal Reynolds.”

I stopped several feet away.

“Who are you?”

He smiled faintly.

“That’s not the question you should be asking.”

“Then what’s the question?”

“Why you’re here.”

I looked around.

“Because someone told me to come.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You’re here because you wanted answers.”

I didn’t like the way he said it.

“You know General Hayes?”

The man’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

“Everyone in our line of work knows General Hayes.”

“Our line of work?”

He ignored the question.

Instead, he looked toward the grave beside him.

I followed his gaze.

The marker was simple.

A Marine’s name.

A date.

A few words.

Nothing unusual.

Until I read the name.

DANIEL REYNOLDS.

My breath caught.

I stepped closer.

“What?”

The man watched me carefully.

“You recognize him.”

I couldn’t answer.

My father’s name had been Daniel Reynolds.

But my father had died when I was nine.

At least, that was what I had always been told.

I stared at the marker.

The date of death was wrong.

Not by a few days.

Not by a year.

By seventeen years.

My father had supposedly died in a civilian accident when I was nine.

But this grave belonged to a Marine named Daniel Reynolds.

The same full name.

Same middle initial.

Same hometown.

My hands began to shake.

“Who is this?”

The man finally answered.

“Your father.”

I took a step backward.

“No.”

“Jake—”

“Don’t call me that.”

He stopped.

I stared at the grave.

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

“My father wasn’t a Marine.”

“He was.”

“My father died in a car accident.”

“That’s what you were told.”

The world seemed to tilt.

I couldn’t hear the traffic anymore.

Couldn’t hear the birds.

Couldn’t hear anything except the blood pounding inside my ears.

“What was his rank?”

The man hesitated.

Then he said:

“Master Sergeant.”

I laughed.

Again, that strange nervous laugh.

“My father was an accountant.”

The man looked at me.

“He was undercover.”

I felt something inside me break.

“No.”

“He worked for a classified intelligence unit.”

“No.”

“He disappeared after an operation went wrong.”

“No.”

I stepped toward him.

“You don’t get to stand beside a grave with my father’s name on it and rewrite my entire childhood.”

The man didn’t move.

“You deserved to know.”

“Then why didn’t I?”

“Because your father asked them not to tell you.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He wanted you protected.”

“Protected from what?”

The man looked toward the entrance.

Then back at me.

“From the people who killed him.”

The words hit me harder than anything else.

I couldn’t speak.

My father had been dead for seventeen years.

At least, that’s what I had believed.

But now this stranger was telling me he hadn’t died in an accident.

He had been killed.

And someone had worked very hard to make sure I never knew.

“Who killed him?”

The man’s face hardened.

“We don’t know.”

“Then why bring me here?”

“Because we finally found something.”

“What?”

He reached into his coat.

My hand moved instinctively toward my sidearm.

He noticed.

“Relax.”

“I’m relaxed.”

“You don’t look relaxed.”

“You’re standing beside my father’s grave after telling me my entire childhood was a lie.”

“Fair enough.”

He pulled out a small envelope.

He held it toward me.

I didn’t take it.

“What is that?”

“Something your father left behind.”

I stared at it.

“Why didn’t General Hayes give it to me?”

“Because General Hayes doesn’t have it.”

“Then who does?”

The man looked directly at me.

“I did.”

I took the envelope.

It was old.

The edges were worn.

There was no name on it.

Only a number.

17.

I looked at him.

“What does seventeen mean?”

“You’ll understand.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

I unfolded it.

There were only three sentences.

Jake,

If you’re reading this, they’ve finally found you.

Trust no one who tells you I died by accident.

I read the words twice.

Then a third time.

My vision blurred.

My father had written my name.

Not a generic message.

Not something intended for whoever happened to find it.

My name.

Jake.

I looked at the date at the bottom.

It had been written seventeen years ago.

The same year my father supposedly died.

I looked up.

“Where did you get this?”

The man didn’t answer.

“Where?”

He finally said:

“Your father gave it to General Hayes.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“He told Hayes that if anything happened to him, the letter was supposed to reach you.”

“Then why didn’t it?”

The man’s expression became grim.

“Because Hayes never received the package.”

“What happened to it?”

“We found it years later.”

“Where?”

He looked at the grave.

“Buried with another Marine.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because your father trusted him.”

I looked down at the letter again.

My father’s handwriting.

I knew it.

Even after all those years, I knew it.

The slant of the letters.

The way he crossed his t’s.

The tiny pressure mark where his pen had pressed too hard.

This wasn’t fake.

At least, if it was, whoever created it had known things nobody outside my family should have known.

“Why are you telling me this now?”

“Because General Hayes believes the people who killed your father may have started looking at you.”

My head snapped up.

“Why?”

“Because you found something during that training exercise.”

“The sabotage.”

He nodded.

“You weren’t supposed to notice the equipment failure.”

“Why?”

“Because the failure wasn’t the objective.”

I stared at him.

“What was?”

He looked at me for a long moment.

“You were.”

I didn’t understand.

“Me?”

“You were the objective.”

“Why?”

“Because they needed to know whether you would recognize something your father used to recognize.”

I felt sick.

“What are you talking about?”

He took another photograph from his coat.

This one was older.

Much older.

He handed it to me.

I looked at it.

It showed a group of Marines standing outside a building.

One of them was my father.

I knew him instantly.

Younger.

Stronger.

Wearing a Marine uniform.

But there was something else.

Standing beside him was a much younger General Hayes.

I stared at the photograph.

“You knew him.”

The man nodded.

“We all knew him.”

“Who are you?”

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“Thomas.”

“Thomas what?”

He smiled sadly.

“Your father called me Tom.”

That wasn’t an answer.

But before I could ask another question, I heard footsteps behind us.

Tom’s expression changed.

“Don’t turn around.”

I froze.

“Why?”

“Because if they see you looking at them, they’ll know we told you.”

My heart started pounding.

I could hear footsteps approaching.

Slow.

Measured.

Not hurried.

Someone was walking toward us.

Tom whispered:

“Jake, listen carefully.”

I kept my eyes on the grave.

“Your father didn’t die because he knew too much.”

The footsteps stopped.

Tom continued.

“He died because he was trying to expose something inside the Corps.”

My stomach tightened.

“Something inside the Corps?”

“Yes.”

“How high?”

Tom looked at me.

“High enough that people with four stars can be watched.”

I thought of General Hayes.

The diner.

The folder.

The anonymous report.

Everything suddenly connected.

Or almost connected.

Then Tom whispered:

“And that’s why Hayes is in danger too.”

The footsteps began moving again.

Tom stepped backward.

I turned slightly.

“Where are you going?”

“Remember what your father wrote.”

“Trust no one.”

Tom nodded.

“Especially not the person who tells you they’re protecting you.”

Then he disappeared between two rows of graves.

I wanted to follow him.

But the footsteps were getting closer.

I turned.

A man in a dark civilian jacket was standing twenty feet away.

He wasn’t looking at Tom.

He was looking at me.

I recognized him.

Not from the photograph.

Not from the base.

From somewhere else.

The diner.

He had been sitting in the corner that night.

I remembered him suddenly.

A man with a newspaper.

Head lowered.

I had thought he was the truck driver.

But he wasn’t.

He had been watching.

Watching me.

Watching the old veteran.

Watching everything.

Our eyes met.

He didn’t run.

He simply turned and walked away.

I started after him.

“Hey!”

He didn’t stop.

I ran.

Between the graves.

Past the trees.

He moved faster than a man his age should have.

I reached the corner of a maintenance building.

He was gone.

No vehicle.

No footsteps.

Nothing.

I stood there breathing hard.

Then I saw something on the ground.

A small object.

I picked it up.

A metal identification tag.

Not a military dog tag.

A key.

A tiny brass key with a number stamped into it.

17.

My blood went cold.

The same number as the envelope.

I turned the key over.

There was one more marking.

A letter.

B.

17-B.

I put it in my pocket.

Then my
