Part 4: “The night my mom died, I found a savings book hidden under her mattress: it had $14,600,000, even though she had been surviving on a miserable pension for years.”

THE SECRET INSIDE THE JOURNAL

Clara’s lungs burned as she stared at Daniel Mercer standing at the tunnel exit like a man who had already won.
Rain poured behind him outside the hidden tunnel entrance near the cemetery woods. Lightning flashed across his face, illuminating the calm smile that made Clara’s skin crawl.
Behind her, the men chasing through the tunnel were getting closer every second.
She was trapped.
Daniel slowly adjusted the cuffs of his expensive coat and sighed almost sadly.
“You’ve caused a great deal of trouble tonight, Clara.”
Her hands tightened around the leather journal.
“You murdered my father.”
Daniel tilted his head slightly.
“No,” he replied calmly. “Your father murdered himself the moment he decided to betray me.”
Rage surged through Clara so violently she nearly charged at him right there.
“You’re lying!”
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“Your father was my friend for twenty years.” His voice lowered. “But he became emotional. Dangerous. Weak.”
The tunnel behind Clara filled with flashlight beams.
The men had nearly reached her.
Daniel extended his hand politely.
“Give me the journal and the key.”
Clara took a slow step backward instead.
Daniel sighed again.
“I was hoping you’d be smarter than this.”
Then suddenly—
A gunshot exploded from the woods outside.

BANG!

One of Daniel’s men collapsed instantly.
Everyone froze.
Another shot rang out.
BANG!
A second guard fell screaming into the mud.
“Sniper!” someone yelled.
Chaos erupted immediately.
Daniel spun furiously toward the tree line.
“Find him!”
His men scattered into the storm.
That was all the opening Clara needed.
She sprinted directly at Daniel.
His eyes widened slightly in surprise as she slammed into him with all her strength.
Both of them crashed into the muddy ground outside the tunnel.
The journal flew from Clara’s hands.
Daniel grabbed her wrist violently.
“You stupid girl!”
Clara kicked him hard in the stomach and broke free.
She scrambled toward the journal lying in the rain-soaked grass.
But Daniel was faster.
He grabbed her ankle and dragged her backward through the mud.
Clara screamed.

Then another figure burst from the trees.

A man dressed in dark clothing tackled Daniel violently to the ground.

The two men rolled through the mud throwing punches while rain hammered down around them.

“RUN!” the stranger shouted at Clara.

She recognized the voice instantly.

Elias.

Clara grabbed the journal and staggered backward as Daniel slammed Elias against a gravestone.

Lightning flashed again.

For the first time Clara saw Elias clearly.

Late thirties.

Bearded.

Bruised face.

Eyes filled with exhaustion.

Daniel punched him hard across the jaw.

“You traitor!” Daniel roared.

Elias spat blood into the rain.

“You killed him!”

Daniel’s expression turned cold as ice.

“Because he was weak.”

Clara’s chest tightened painfully.

Her father.

Daniel suddenly pulled a handgun from inside his coat.

Everything stopped.

Elias froze.

The gun pointed directly at his chest.

Rain dripped from Daniel’s face as he slowly smiled.

“You should’ve stayed buried with him.”

Clara acted without thinking.

She grabbed a broken tree branch from the mud and swung it as hard as she could.

CRACK!

The branch smashed against Daniel’s arm.

The gun fired wildly into the darkness.

BANG!

Birds exploded from nearby trees.

Daniel stumbled backward in shock.

Elias immediately tackled him again.

“GO!” Elias shouted desperately.

This time Clara listened.

She ran through the cemetery woods while thunder shook the sky overhead.

Branches tore at her clothes.

Mud soaked her shoes.

Behind her she could hear shouting, gunfire, and men searching through the storm.

But one terrifying thought kept repeating inside her mind.

Her grandmother.

Was she alive?

Tears mixed with rain down Clara’s face as she ran deeper into the forest.

After nearly ten minutes, Elias finally caught up to her near an abandoned road.

He was breathing heavily, blood running from a cut above his eye.

“Come on,” he said urgently. “We don’t have much time.”

Clara backed away instantly.

“Stay away from me.”

Elias stopped.

“You said you knew my father,” Clara whispered. “Prove it.”

For a moment, only rain filled the silence between them.

Then Elias slowly reached into his jacket pocket.

Clara tensed.

But instead of a weapon, he pulled out an old photograph.

He handed it to her carefully.

Clara stared at it in disbelief.

The photo showed her father years younger, smiling beside Elias in front of a small fishing cabin.

Written across the bottom in faded ink were four words:

BROTHERS TILL THE END.

Clara looked up slowly.

“You were his friend…”

Elias nodded once.

“We grew up together.”

“Then why were you working for Daniel Mercer?”

Pain crossed Elias’s face instantly.

“Because we didn’t know what he really was until it was too late.”

Lightning illuminated the empty road behind them.

A black SUV suddenly appeared in the distance.

Headlights cutting through the rain.

Coming fast.

Elias grabbed Clara’s arm.

“We have to move now.”

“Where are we going?”

Elias looked toward the dark highway ahead.

“To the bank.”

Clara clutched the silver key tightly in her hand.

And somewhere far behind them, hidden in the stormy darkness…

Daniel Mercer was still alive………………………………………………………………….
