PART 9: “I Came Home Early And Found Out Where Four Years Of My Money Went…

PART 9 — THE GRAVE WITH MY NAME

The bullet never reached Adrian.
Marcus fired first.
Daniel’s weapon flew from his hand.
The cemetery erupted into chaos.
“DOWN!” Marcus shouted.
I grabbed Lucy and pulled her behind my father’s grave.
Adrian disappeared behind a stone monument.
My grandfather dropped to one knee.
Theresa screamed.
Another shot cracked through the darkness.
Then another.
For several seconds, I couldn’t tell who was shooting at whom.
All I could see were flashes of light between the graves.
Then silence.
Complete silence.
I lifted my head.
“Adrian?”
Nothing.
“Adrian!”
A hand grabbed my shoulder.

I spun around.

It was him.

“I’m here.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Lucy?”

She was beside me, shaking.

Marcus crouched behind a tree.

“Stay down!”

I looked toward Daniel.

He was gone.

Theresa was gone too.

My grandfather was still standing.

And he was pointing his gun at Marcus.

“Put it down,” Marcus said.

My grandfather didn’t move.

“You betrayed me.”

Marcus stared at him.

“No.”

“You betrayed the family.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You destroyed the family.”

My grandfather’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know what I did.”

“I know enough.”

“You think you understand?”

“I know you separated two children from their mother.”

My grandfather looked at Lucy.

Then at me.

“You don’t know who she is.”

I stood.

“Then tell me.”

He lowered the gun slightly.

“Lucy was never supposed to marry you.”

I felt sick.

“Why?”

“Because she was supposed to remain hidden.”

“From whom?”

“From everyone.”

“Why?”

He looked at Adrian.

“Because your mother was the only person who knew where she came from.”

I stared.

“Theresa?”

He nodded.

“Theresa found Lucy when she was sixteen.”

Lucy started crying.

“She didn’t find me.”

My grandfather looked at her.

“She found you.”

“No.”

Lucy shook her head.

“She took me.”

The words hung in the air.

I looked at her.

“What?”

Lucy wiped her face.

“She took me from the hospital.”

My grandfather said nothing.

Lucy continued.

“I was sixteen.”

She looked at me.

“I had just discovered that I had a brother.”

My heart stopped.

“Adrian?”

She nodded.

“But I didn’t know who he was.”

I looked at Adrian.

He stared at the ground.

Lucy continued.

“Theresa told me my son had died.”

I froze.

“Your son?”

She looked at Adrian.

“He was my child.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“I was sixteen,” Lucy whispered.

“My parents were told I had given birth to a stillborn baby.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“But he wasn’t dead.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“They took him.”

I looked at Adrian.

“You were the baby?”

He nodded.

Then Lucy looked at me.

“And then, two years later…”

She couldn’t finish.

I whispered,

“Me.”

She nodded.

“You were born.”

My world collapsed.

I looked at my grandfather.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was our mother?”

“Yes.”

“You knew Adrian was alive?”

“Yes.”

“And you let me marry her?”

His face hardened.

“I didn’t know you would.”

I stared at him.

“You knew everything.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“By lying?”

“Yes.”

“By separating us?”

“Yes.”

“By letting my father die?”

He looked away.

“I didn’t order your father’s death.”

“But you knew it was coming.”

Silence.

That was the answer.

I stepped closer.

“You knew.”

My grandfather’s voice became quiet.

“I knew Daniel wanted him dead.”

“And you did nothing.”

“I tried.”

“Too late.”

“Yes.”

He lowered his gun.

“I was too late.”

For the first time, I saw something behind his eyes.

Regret.

Real regret.

But it wasn’t enough.

I looked at the grave beside my father’s.

My name was carved into it.

Tomorrow’s date.

Someone had prepared my death before I even knew I was in danger.

I walked toward it.

“Who made this?”

My grandfather said nothing.

Marcus answered.

“Daniel.”

I touched the stone.

The letters were freshly carved.

My fingers traced my name.

Nathan Carter.

Tomorrow.

I laughed quietly.

“They’re confident.”

Adrian stepped beside me.

“They always have been.”

I looked at him.

“Then let’s disappoint them.”

He smiled for the first time.

A small smile.

But it was real.

“That’s what I’ve been waiting to hear.”

Then a voice came from behind us.

“Don’t.”

We turned.

Theresa stood between the graves.

She was holding Lucy’s old medical file.

Her hands were shaking.

“Mom.”

She looked at me.

“Don’t call me that.”

I stared.

“Why?”

“Because I haven’t earned it.”

Silence.

She looked at Lucy.

“You were never supposed to survive.”

Lucy stepped forward.

“You tried to kill me.”

Theresa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

I felt anger rising.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel told me if you found out the truth, everyone would die.”

“Everyone?”

She nodded.

“Your father.”

“Adrian.”

“Lucy.”

“And you.”

I stared at her.

“So you killed my father to save yourself?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I thought I was saving you.”

“You let him die.”

“I thought Daniel would scare him.”

“But he killed him.”

“I know.”

“Then why stay with Daniel?”

Theresa looked toward the road.

“Because by the time I understood what he really was, it was too late.”

I stared at her.

“You could have told me.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Every time you called.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“I tried to tell you.”

“You told me Lucy was dangerous.”

“I was trying to warn you.”

“You told me not to come home.”

“Because I knew they’d kill you.”

“You told me the trust didn’t exist.”

“Because I didn’t want Daniel to know you had found it.”

I shook my head.

“You lied about everything.”

“Yes.”

“But sometimes…”

She swallowed.

“Sometimes the lie was the only thing keeping you alive.”

I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

Then Marcus shouted,

“Everybody move!”

A red laser appeared on the cemetery wall.

A sniper.

Marcus fired toward the trees.

“RUN!”

We scattered.

Another bullet struck the grave beside me.

Stone exploded.

Adrian grabbed me.

“Move!”

We ran between the graves.

Lucy followed.

Theresa disappeared into the darkness.

My grandfather stayed behind.

I heard him shout,

“Go!”

Then another gunshot.

I looked back.

My grandfather was standing in the open.

A man emerged behind him.

Daniel.

Daniel raised his weapon.

My grandfather fired.

Daniel fired back.

My grandfather fell.

“GRANDFATHER!”

I tried to run toward him.

Adrian stopped me.

“No!”

“He’s hurt!”

“It’s a trap!”

I struggled.

“Let me go!”

Adrian pulled me behind a stone wall.

Daniel walked toward my grandfather.

He stood over him.

Then Daniel looked directly at us.

He smiled.

“You should have stayed in Canada.”

He raised his gun.

Then Marcus shot him.

Daniel dropped behind the graves.

Marcus ran toward us.

“Move!”

We ran.

Behind us, more shots echoed.

We reached the cemetery gate.

A black vehicle was waiting.

The driver’s door opened.

A woman stepped out.

I recognized her.

She was my father’s old secretary.

“Get in!”

I stared.

“You?”

“Now!”

Marcus looked at her.

“Can we trust her?”

She looked at me.

“Your father did.”

That was enough.

We got inside.

She accelerated.

The cemetery disappeared behind us.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then I asked,

“Who are you really?”

She looked at me through the mirror.

“My name is Evelyn.”

“You worked for my father.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Twenty-three years.”

“You knew about Adrian?”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Lucy?”

“Yes.”

“You knew my mother wasn’t my mother?”

“Yes.”

I laughed.

“Is there anyone who didn’t know except me?”

Evelyn didn’t answer.

That hurt more than anything.

Then she said,

“Your father wanted you to have a normal life.”

“By lying to me?”

“He wanted you to survive.”

I looked at Adrian.

He was staring out the window.

“Where are we going?”

“Somewhere safe.”

“There is no safe place.”

She smiled sadly.

“Your father believed there was.”

“Where?”

She didn’t answer.

I looked at the road.

“Evelyn.”

She finally spoke.

“Your father’s original office.”

I frowned.

“That’s been demolished.”

“No.”

“It was destroyed years ago.”

“That is what everyone believes.”

I stared at her.

“You’re saying it’s still there?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Under the old courthouse.”

My heart started racing.

“The archive.”

She nodded.

“The archive.”

Marcus leaned forward.

“What is inside?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Everything.”

She stopped the car beneath an abandoned bridge.

“Everyone out.”

We followed her through a hidden entrance.

Inside was a staircase descending underground.

At the bottom was a steel door.

Evelyn entered a code.

The door opened.

Beyond it was a room larger than I expected.

Rows of cabinets.

Servers.

Boxes.

Photographs.

Documents.

And on the far wall—

a giant map.

Hundreds of names were pinned across it.

Some had red lines.

Some had black lines.

Some had photographs.

I stepped closer.

Then I saw my own photograph.

Beside it was Adrian’s.

Beside ours was Lucy’s.

And beside Lucy’s photograph was another.

A woman.

I stared.

“Who is she?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“Your biological grandmother.”

I froze.

“My grandfather’s wife?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“The woman who created Northstar.”

Marcus went pale.

I turned.

“You know her?”

“Yes.”

“Who is she?”

Evelyn whispered,

“She’s alive.”

I looked at the photograph again.

An older woman.

Cold eyes.

Elegant clothes.

And underneath her photograph was one name.

ELENA VALE.

I recognized the name.

Everyone did.

Elena Vale was a legendary philanthropist who had disappeared from public life decades earlier.

She had founded hospitals.

Schools.

Charities.

Banks.

She was supposed to have died twenty years ago.

I looked at Evelyn.

“She founded Northstar?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To control people.”

“How?”

“Money.”

“Identity.”

“Fear.”

“And family.”

I looked at Lucy.

Evelyn nodded.

“Especially family.”

She opened a cabinet.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Each one labeled with a family name.

Carter.

Morris.

Vale.

Reed.

I stopped.

“Reed?”

Marcus stepped closer.

His face changed.

“That’s my family.”

Evelyn handed him the file.

He opened it.

His hands began shaking.

“What?”

Marcus read silently.

Then looked at me.

“My father worked for Northstar.”

I stared.

“What?”

“He wasn’t just a businessman.”

“What was he?”

Marcus swallowed.

“An enforcer.”

Silence.

“That’s why your father trusted me.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because I knew how they operated.”

He looked at the file again.

“But I didn’t know my father was involved.”

Evelyn interrupted.

“He was.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Did he kill people?”

“Yes.”

Marcus closed his eyes.

I watched him.

For the first time, I understood why he had spent years trying to protect me.

He had been trying to undo his family’s sins.

Then Evelyn handed me another file.

“This is yours.”

I opened it.

Inside was a document titled:

PROJECT TWO SONS.

My hands went cold.

“What is this?”

Evelyn said nothing.

I read the first page.

Objective: Separate the twins.

Second page:

Objective: Control inheritance.

Third:

Objective: Replace biological mother with approved guardian.

Fourth:

Objective: Ensure Nathan believes Adrian abandoned him.

Fifth:

Objective: Ensure Adrian believes Nathan abandoned him.

I stopped.

This wasn’t an accident.

It wasn’t one person’s betrayal.

It was a plan.

A plan created before we were old enough to understand what family meant.

I turned another page.

At the bottom was a signature.

I knew it.

My grandfather’s.

I looked at him in my memory.

His warnings.

His secrets.

His guilt.

Then another signature appeared.

Theresa’s.

Then Daniel’s.

Then one final signature.

I stared at it.

Elena Vale.

The founder of Northstar.

The woman everyone believed was dead.

I looked at Evelyn.

“Where is she?”

Evelyn didn’t answer.

“She is here?”

“No.”

“Then where?”

She looked at the map.

At one particular location.

A red circle had been drawn around it.

My blood turned cold.

It was the hospital.

The same hospital where Lucy had been treated.

The same hospital where someone had tried to change her medication.

“The hospital?”

Evelyn nodded.

“That’s where Northstar keeps its living witnesses.”

I felt sick.

“How many?”

“Thirty-seven.”

“Children?”

“Some.”

“Adults?”

“Most.”

“Why keep them alive?”

“Because they know something.”

I looked at Lucy.

“What does she know?”

Evelyn stared at her.

“Everything.”

Lucy closed her eyes.

Then she whispered,

“I remember now.”

Everyone turned.

She looked at me.

“I remember who Elena Vale is.”

“Who?”

Lucy began to cry.

“She was there the night you were born.”

I froze.

“What?”

“She wasn’t just watching.”

Lucy looked at Adrian.

“She was holding him.”

Adrian’s face went pale.

“Who was holding me?”

Lucy whispered,

“Elena.”

Silence.

Then Lucy looked at me.

“And she told me something.”

“What?”

“She said…”

Lucy struggled to breathe.

“She said one of my sons would become her heir.”

My blood turned cold.

“Which one?”

Lucy looked directly at me.

“Nathan.”

I stared.

“Why me?”

“Because Adrian was never supposed to survive.”

Adrian stepped backward.

“What?”

Lucy covered her mouth.

“I didn’t know.”

“What did she do?”

Lucy whispered,

“She marked him.”

I looked at Adrian’s eyebrow.

The scar.

The small scar I had noticed in the photograph.

I suddenly remembered it.

A mark from childhood.

A mark I had forgotten.

Evelyn looked at the scar.

Her face changed.

“Oh my God.”

“What?”

“That isn’t a scar.”

Adrian touched his eyebrow.

“Then what is it?”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“A tracking implant.”

The room went silent.

Adrian froze.

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“They implanted it when he was six.”

Marcus immediately pulled out a device.

“What kind?”

“Old technology.”

“Can it still work?”

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

“Yes.”

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared.

THANK YOU FOR BRINGING HIM TO ME.

I looked at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

NOW I KNOW WHERE YOU ALL ARE.

The lights in the archive went out.

Evelyn whispered,

“They found us.”

Then every computer screen in the room turned on at once.

A woman’s face appeared.

Older.

Elegant.

Cold eyes.

The same woman from the photograph.

Elena Vale.

She smiled.

“Hello, Nathan.”

I couldn’t move.

She looked directly into the camera.

“I’ve waited twenty years to meet you.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“You’re dead.”

Elena smiled.

“That’s what I wanted everyone to believe.”

Then she looked at Lucy.

“I’m sorry you had to remember this way.”

Lucy started crying.

Elena continued.

“But your children were never yours to keep.”

I felt rage rising.

“You’re not taking anyone.”

Elena smiled.

“You still don’t understand.”

“What?”

She leaned closer to the camera.

“Northstar was never about money.”

The screen changed.

It showed photographs of dozens of families.

Then mine.

Then Adrian’s.

Then Lucy’s.

Elena spoke calmly.

“Northstar was created to find people who could inherit power.”

I stared.

“What power?”

“Influence.”

“Money.”

“Political access.”

“Names.”

“Bloodlines.”

She smiled.

“And your family has something I need.”

“What?”

“The original Carter bloodline.”

I laughed.

“This is insane.”

“No.”

Her expression became cold.

“It’s history.”

Then the screen changed again.

A document appeared.

At the top:

SUCCESSION AGREEMENT.

Underneath:

Primary Heir — Nathan Carter.

Then:

Secondary Heir — Adrian Carter.

And finally:

Guardian — Elena Vale.

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Evelyn.

“What does this mean?”

She whispered,

“If Elena proves you are her heir…”

I interrupted.

“Then what?”

“She controls everything.”

I looked at the screen.

Elena smiled.

“Tomorrow morning, Nathan, you will sign the succession agreement.”

“No.”

“You will.”

“No.”

“Because if you don’t…”

The screen changed.

A live video appeared.

My grandfather.

He was tied to a chair.

His face was bruised.

Beside him stood Daniel.

Then Theresa.

Elena spoke.

“If you refuse…”

Daniel placed a gun against my grandfather’s head.

“You lose him.”

I stared at the screen.

My grandfather looked directly at me.

“Don’t do it.”

Daniel struck him.

I shouted,

“STOP!”

Elena smiled.

“Tomorrow.”

The screen went black.

Silence filled the archive.

I looked at everyone.

Then at Adrian.

He stared at me.

“We have one night.”

I nodded.

“One night.”

Marcus checked his weapon.

“Then we find Daniel.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel isn’t the real target.”

“Then who?”

She pointed toward the screen.

“Elena.”

I stared at the black monitor.

Then I smiled.

“Good.”

Adrian looked at me.

“What?”

I picked up the succession document.

“If she wants me to sign something…”

I tore it in half.

“…she’s going to have to come and get me.”

Then every phone in the room rang simultaneously.

One message appeared on every screen.

PART 10 WILL BEGIN WITH THE FIRST PERSON WHO DIES.

And underneath it was a photograph.

My grandfather.

Alive.

But beside him stood someone I hadn’t expected.

My father.

Older.

Scarred.

Alive.

I dropped the phone.

For the first time in four years…

I realized my father might still be alive.

And if that photograph was real—

then everything we believed about his death was a lie……….
