PART 8: Father Finds Daughter Bleeding Outside, Then Brother Uncovers the Plan.

PART 8 — THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The staircase waited beneath us.
Dark.
Silent.
Endless.
And somewhere below—
my father’s voice.
“Come downstairs.”
Sarah’s fingers tightened around mine.
I looked at Chris.
He looked terrified.
Not because of the darkness.
Because of the voice.
“You recognize it,” I said.
Chris swallowed.
“Yes.”
“You’ve heard him since he supposedly died.”
“No.”
“Then why do you look like that?”
He didn’t answer.
I stepped toward the staircase.
“Jamie,” Chris whispered.
I stopped.
“What?”
“If he really is alive…”
He hesitated.
“What?”
“…then everything Dad told us about his death was a lie.”
I looked down into the darkness.
“Maybe.”

“No.”

Chris shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

“He didn’t just fake his death.”

“What did he do?”

Chris looked at Sarah.

“He disappeared from everyone.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“He disappeared from the government. The banks. The company. Blackwood. Everyone.”

“So?”

“So if he’s alive…”

Chris’s voice dropped.

“…he’s been living as someone else.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

I looked down the stairs.

“Then maybe that’s why he wants me down there.”

Sarah suddenly pulled my hand.

“Daddy.”

“What?”

She pointed toward the darkness.

“He’s not alone.”

I froze.

“What do you mean?”

“I hear someone with him.”

“Who?”

Sarah closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“A woman.”

My mother.

Anna.

Evelyn.

Melissa.

There were too many possibilities.

I raised my flashlight.

“Stay behind me.”

We began descending.

One step.

Two.

Three.

The air became colder.

The sound of the house disappeared above us.

By the tenth step, I could no longer see the entrance.

By the twentieth, I couldn’t hear Chris breathing.

Then—

a door.

At the bottom.

Steel.

Old.

A small red light blinked above it.

Sarah stopped.

“Daddy.”

“I know.”

“That’s the door.”

“What door?”

“The one Mommy told me never to open.”

I looked at Chris.

“Which Mommy?”

Sarah answered before he could.

“Anna.”

My stomach tightened.

I reached for the handle.

Locked.

Then a speaker above the door crackled.

My father’s voice returned.

“You’re late.”

I stared at the speaker.

“Dad?”

A quiet laugh.

“You still call me that.”

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“That’s a complicated question.”

“Try me.”

Silence.

Then:

“Because dying was the only way I could protect you.”

I felt my anger rising.

“You let me believe you were dead for decades.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

“No, James.”

His voice became colder.

“You had the choice.”

“What choice?”

“To become me.”

I stared at the door.

“I don’t want anything you built.”

“You already have it.”

“I don’t want Blackwood.”

“Blackwood doesn’t belong to me.”

“Then who does it belong to?”

Silence.

Finally:

“Your mother.”

My blood went cold.

“You said she was dead.”

“I said she was gone.”

“You lied.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if you knew she was alive, you’d go looking for her.”

“I already did.”

A pause.

“And now she knows.”

The lock clicked.

The steel door opened.

Chris grabbed my shoulder.

“Wait.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He pointed toward the floor.

A red line was blinking beneath the doorway.

“Motion sensor.”

“So?”

“So someone is monitoring us.”

I looked at the camera above us.

I stepped through anyway.

The room beyond was enormous.

Not a basement.

Not a bunker.

A control center.

Monitors covered the walls.

Maps.

Photographs.

Documents.

Bank records.

Birth certificates.

Court files.

Police reports.

Thousands of names.

Thousands of lives.

And in the center—

a single desk.

A man sat behind it.

His back was toward us.

Gray hair.

Dark suit.

One hand resting on the desk.

I knew that posture.

I had seen it my entire childhood.

I whispered:

“Dad.”

The man turned.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

He looked older.

Much older.

But it was him.

The same eyes.

The same scar above his eyebrow.

The same face I remembered from the last photograph taken before his supposed death.

My father stood.

“James.”

I couldn’t move.

Sarah stepped closer to me.

My father looked at her.

And something changed in his expression.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You’ve grown.”

Sarah stared at him.

“You know me?”

He smiled.

“I’ve known you since before you were born.”

I stepped between them.

“Stay away from her.”

He raised his hands.

“I won’t hurt her.”

“You already did.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I saved her.”

“From what?”

“From the people who wanted to own her.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You created all of this.”

“I created the trust.”

“You created Blackwood.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Blackwood existed before me.”

“Then why did you join it?”

“To destroy it.”

I stared.

“Why should I believe you?”

“Because you shouldn’t.”

That answer stopped me.

My father walked toward a wall.

He touched a screen.

A photograph appeared.

My family.

My father.

My mother.

Anna.

Chris.

Me.

And another man.

I recognized him.

The detective.

The same detective who had disappeared from the house.

My father said:

“He is not Blackwood.”

I stared.

“Then who is he?”

“A federal investigator.”

“What?”

“He has been investigating Blackwood for twelve years.”

I shook my head.

“He tried to kill us.”

“No.”

My father looked at me.

“He tried to stop you from opening the wrong door.”

I thought about the gunfire.

The smoke.

The chaos.

“What wrong door?”

My father didn’t answer.

Instead, he touched another screen.

A photograph appeared.

A hospital.

Eight years earlier.

Melissa was standing beside a newborn baby.

But the baby wasn’t Sarah.

I recognized it immediately.

It was the same image from the hidden files.

My father said:

“That child died.”

I nodded.

“Norma told us.”

“She was lying.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“Melissa did give birth to a child.”

“But?”

“The baby didn’t die.”

“Then where is she?”

My father looked at Sarah.

“Right here.”

I froze.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Nothing about Sarah is impossible.”

I looked at my daughter.

She was staring at the screen.

My father continued.

“The woman you called Melissa was never Sarah’s biological mother.”

I already knew that.

But then he said something I wasn’t prepared for.

“Neither was Anna.”

I turned toward him.

“What?”

He pointed at the screen.

“Sarah was born from a program.”

I felt sick.

“What program?”

“Blackwood’s final experiment.”

Chris stepped forward.

“What experiment?”

My father looked at him.

“Identity replication.”

Chris frowned.

“Meaning?”

“They wanted to create a person who could inherit another person’s legal identity.”

I looked at Sarah.

“You mean…”

“Yes.”

My father nodded.

“Sarah was created to become someone else.”

“Who?”

He hesitated.

Then:

“You.”

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“That makes no sense.”

“It will.”

He touched the screen.

A document appeared.

My name.

JAMES ANTHONY HALE.

Under it—

a second name.

DANIEL CROSS.

I felt the same strange sensation I’d experienced before.

A memory.

A red door.

A woman’s voice.

A needle.

A little boy crying.

Then darkness.

I grabbed the edge of the desk.

My father watched me.

“You’re remembering.”

I whispered:

“Daniel.”

He nodded.

“That was your first name.”

Chris looked at me.

“You really don’t remember?”

“No.”

My father answered.

“Because we made sure you didn’t.”

I looked at him.

“Who is Daniel?”

He pointed at me.

“You.”

My breathing became shallow.

“Then who was James Hale?”

“My biological son.”

“Where is he?”

My father looked down.

“Dead.”

“How?”

“He died when he was six.”

“Then why did you replace him with me?”

My father’s face tightened.

“Because Blackwood wanted my son.”

“Why?”

“Because he was the heir.”

“To the trust?”

“Yes.”

“And you replaced him with me?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I saved you.”

I stared.

“From what?”

“From becoming a weapon.”

The room fell silent.

My father walked toward Sarah.

I moved immediately.

He stopped.

“I’m not going to touch her.”

“Then stay back.”

He nodded.

“You have every reason not to trust me.”

“Good.”

“But you need to know why Sarah was created.”

I said nothing.

He pointed toward another screen.

A woman appeared.

Young.

Pregnant.

Standing outside a hospital.

I recognized her.

Melissa.

But beside her stood another woman.

My mother.

And behind them—

Norma.

My father said:

“They were working together.”

My stomach turned.

“Melissa and Norma?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To hide Sarah.”

“From Blackwood?”

“No.”

My father looked at me.

“From me.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Your mother believed I would destroy Sarah if I found out about her.”

“Why would you?”

“Because I didn’t know the whole truth.”

“What truth?”

He looked at Sarah.

“She wasn’t created by Blackwood.”

I frowned.

“Then who created her?”

My father didn’t answer immediately.

Finally:

“Your mother.”

My chest tightened.

“She created Sarah?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To replace you.”

Silence.

Chris whispered:

“That’s why the identity records were created.”

My father nodded.

“Sarah was supposed to inherit your identity if you died.”

I looked at my daughter.

“They wanted her to become me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Blackwood believed you were the only person capable of destroying them.”

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.”

My father looked directly into my eyes.

“You were never important because of your blood.”

“Then why?”

“Because of what you refused to become.”

I remembered the words from the old letter.

His refusal.

My father continued:

“When Blackwood came for you, they expected you to join them.”

“But I didn’t.”

“No.”

“You raised me to hate them.”

“Yes.”

“You made me believe I was your son.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed you to become someone they couldn’t control.”

My voice broke.

“And Sarah?”

He looked at her.

“She was the insurance policy.”

I stared.

“What insurance?”

“If Blackwood ever captured you, Sarah would inherit the trust.”

“Why would a child inherit it?”

“Because the trust was designed so no adult could seize it.”

I looked at the documents.

“And the original ledger?”

My father’s expression changed.

“Still missing.”

“Where is it?”

He looked at Sarah.

“She knows.”

Sarah stepped backward.

“No.”

I knelt beside her.

“Sarah?”

She shook her head.

“Mommy said I couldn’t tell.”

“Which Mommy?”

She looked at my father.

Then whispered:

“Her.”

The room went silent.

My father closed his eyes.

“Your mother.”

Sarah nodded.

My father looked devastated.

“She remembers.”

“What?”

“Everything.”

Sarah started crying.

“I don’t want to remember.”

I pulled her close.

“You don’t have to.”

My father looked at us.

Then he said:

“That is why they are coming.”

I looked up.

“Who?”

He didn’t answer.

The monitors suddenly changed.

Every screen went black.

Then one word appeared.

HELLO.

My father froze.

Another word appeared.

FATHER.

Then:

YOU FAILED.

The building shook.

An explosion sounded somewhere above us.

Chris grabbed the table.

“What was that?”

My father rushed toward the security panel.

“They found us.”

“Who?”

“Blackwood.”

The screens began showing security cameras.

Cars surrounding the estate.

Men entering the building.

Then—

a camera feed from the hallway.

My mother was walking toward the bunker.

Behind her—

Evelyn.

And behind Evelyn—

Melissa.

I stared.

“Melissa is alive.”

My father nodded.

“She was never working alone.”

The bunker door began locking itself.

One bolt.

Two.

Three.

My father shouted:

“Get Sarah into the vault!”

“Where?”

He pointed toward a hidden door.

I ran with Sarah.

Chris followed.

“What’s inside?”

“The original trust.”

We reached the door.

It opened.

Inside was a small room.

No weapons.

No money.

No computers.

Just a wooden box.

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten ledger.

Hundreds of names.

Dates.

Accounts.

Payments.

Deaths.

Everything.

The Blackwood master ledger.

I looked at Chris.

“We found it.”

He nodded.

Then Sarah whispered:

“No.”

“What?”

She pointed toward the final page.

“That’s not the real one.”

I looked.

The last page contained a single sentence.

THE ORIGINAL LEDGER IS NOT A BOOK.

I stared.

“What?”

Sarah pointed at the wall.

“It’s there.”

I looked.

Nothing.

Then she walked toward the wall.

Placed her hand against it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small glass drive.

My father’s face appeared on a tiny screen.

But this recording was different.

He looked frightened.

“James.”

I stepped closer.

“If you’re seeing this, then Sarah has remembered.”

He paused.

“I’m sorry.”

The recording continued.

“I lied to you about almost everything.”

My heart sank.

“I told you Blackwood was the enemy.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“It isn’t.”

I froze.

“The real enemy is the person who taught Blackwood how to survive.”

The video flickered.

Then my father said the words that changed everything.

“Your mother didn’t create Blackwood.”

He swallowed.

“She inherited it.”

A noise sounded outside.

Someone was approaching.

My father continued.

“And the person who controls it now…”

The door behind us shook.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Sarah screamed.

I pulled her close.

My father’s voice became almost a whisper.

“…is standing outside this room.”

The bunker door began to open.

Slowly.

I raised my eyes.

A shadow appeared.

Then a face.

My mother.

She looked at me.

Smiled.

And said:

“Hello, Daniel.”

I froze.

Nobody had called me that in decades.

She stepped into the room.

“You finally remembered your real name.”

I held Sarah tighter.

“What do you want?”

She smiled.

“My grandson.”

I looked at Sarah.

“She’s not your grandson.”

My mother’s smile widened.

“I wasn’t talking about Sarah.”

She pointed at me.

“I was talking about you.”

Then she raised a small device.

The screens behind her turned on.

And every single one displayed the same message:

DANIEL CROSS — PROPERTY OF BLACKWOOD.

My mother looked into my eyes.

“You were never rescued, Daniel.”

She pressed the button.

“You were returned.”

The lights went out.

And Sarah screamed:

“DADDY!”

I reached for her in the darkness.

But my hand closed around nothing.

She was gone.
