PART 4
The words on the back of the photograph refused to leave my mind.
He has been watching you since then.
I stared at the old picture until the edges began to blur.
Eight years.
Eight years of marriage.
Eight years of birthdays, holidays, arguments, reconciliations, ordinary mornings, and nights when I believed I was lying beside the person who knew me better than anyone.
And apparently, someone else had been watching.
From the beginning.
“Valeria,” I whispered.
“Yes?”
“Who is he?”
“We’re going to find out.”
She placed the photograph into a plastic evidence sleeve.
“Don’t touch it again.”
I nodded.
“Why?”
“Because if this becomes part of a legal case, we need to preserve everything exactly as we received it.”
I looked at the photograph.
“Who sent it?”
“We don’t know.”
“What about the email?”
Valeria opened her laptop.
“That’s what we’re investigating.”
She turned the screen toward me.
The email was from Diego to Paula.
The date was five months before his vasectomy.
The subject line was simple.
The Plan
My stomach tightened.
Valeria read it aloud.
“I need you to trust me. I can’t leave her suddenly. People will ask questions. We need a reason.”
I closed my eyes.
A reason.
He had needed a reason to leave me.
Not because I cheated.
Not because our marriage had failed.
Not because he stopped loving me.
He needed a story.
A story that would make him the victim.
Valeria scrolled.
“He continues,” she said.
“After the procedure, things will become easier. Everyone will believe what I tell them if she gets pregnant.”
My eyes opened.
I stared at the screen.
“No.”
Valeria looked at me.
“He planned it?”
“I don’t know exactly what he planned.”
She continued reading.
“The timing has to look impossible. That’s what will make everyone believe me.”
My hands began shaking.
The room suddenly felt too small.
“He wanted me to get pregnant.”
Valeria didn’t answer.
I stood up.
“No.”
I started pacing.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“Laura—”
“He accused me because I got pregnant after his vasectomy.”
“I know.”
“But this says he wanted the pregnancy to happen.”
Valeria nodded slowly.
“That is what it appears to say.”
I laughed.
It was a horrible sound.
“He was going to use my pregnancy as proof that I cheated.”
Valeria closed the laptop.
“That is our working theory.”
I stopped pacing.
“What does Paula say?”
“She claims she didn’t know about this.”
“Do you believe her?”
Valeria sighed.
“I believe she knew Diego wanted to leave you. I don’t yet know whether she knew the full plan.”
I looked at the photograph.
The stranger.
The wedding.
The medical facility.
The hidden note.
The email.
Everything seemed connected.
But one question remained.
Why?
Why would Diego want to destroy his marriage so carefully?
Why not simply ask for a divorce?
Why create an elaborate story?
Valeria seemed to read my mind.
“There’s something else.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“The man in the photograph.”
She opened another file.
“We ran the image through every database available to us.”
“And?”
“We found a name.”
My heart pounded.
“Who?”
Valeria turned the screen around.
I read it.
Dr. Samuel Varela.
The name meant nothing.
Then I saw the photograph beneath it.
My stomach dropped.
He was older now.
Gray around the temples.
But it was him.
The man from my wedding.
The man outside the private medical facility.
The man standing beside Diego.
“Who is he?”
Valeria answered quietly.
“A reproductive specialist.”
I stared at her.
“A what?”
“A reproductive endocrinologist.”
My breathing became shallow.
“Why would Diego be meeting a reproductive specialist?”
“We don’t know.”
“Could he have been treating someone?”
“Yes.”
“Paula?”
“Possibly.”
I froze.
Then Valeria added:
“But that’s not what concerns me.”
“What does?”
“Dr. Varela doesn’t appear to have treated Paula.”
I stared at her.
“Then who?”
Valeria clicked another document.
“That’s the question.”
I looked at the patient record.
The name was hidden.
The identifying information had been redacted.
But the date was visible.
The appointment had taken place six weeks before Diego’s vasectomy.
The same week as the photograph.
My heart began pounding.
“What procedure was performed?”
“We don’t know yet.”
“Can we find out?”
“We’re trying.”
I sank back into the chair.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I stared at it.
Valeria looked at me.
“Don’t answer.”
The phone stopped.
A second later, a message appeared.
You should stop digging.
My blood went cold.
Another message.
Some truths are dangerous.
Then a third.
Ask Diego why he went to Dr. Varela.
I looked at Valeria.
She immediately took a screenshot.
“Don’t respond.”
“I won’t.”
The phone buzzed again.
One final message.
Ask him who the twins belong to.
My heart stopped.
Valeria’s face changed.
“What?”
I handed her the phone.
She read it.
Then she looked at me.
“Laura…”
“What?”
“That’s impossible.”
“Why?”
“Because nobody outside this clinic knows there are twins.”
I felt the room go cold.
“Diego knows.”
“Yes.”
“Dr. Ortega knows.”
“Yes.”
“Dr. Salinas knows.”
“Yes.”
“And Valeria.”
She looked at me.
“And me.”
I whispered:
“So whoever sent this knows.”
“Yes.”
“Then we have a leak.”
Valeria immediately stood.
“Don’t panic.”
“I’m not panicking.”
I was lying.
I was terrified.
She began making calls.
I sat silently, staring at the message.
Then another thought struck me.
“Valeria?”
“Yes?”
“Could Diego have sent it?”
She stopped.
“Possibly.”
“Would he?”
“I don’t know.”
“He wants me back.”
“That doesn’t mean he’s harmless.”
I looked at the screen.
“Then let’s assume everyone is capable of lying.”
Valeria nodded.
“That is exactly what we’re going to do.”
The following day, she arranged a meeting with Diego.
Not because I wanted to see him.
Because we needed answers.
This time, we met in a conference room with security cameras.
Diego arrived alone.
He looked exhausted.
His clothes were wrinkled.
His eyes were red.
He sat down.
“What happened?”
Valeria placed the photograph on the table.
Diego looked at it.
And immediately went pale.
I saw it.
That tiny reaction.
The kind people make before they can control themselves.
“You know him.”
Diego didn’t answer.
“Diego.”
He looked at me.
“I know him.”
“Who is he?”
Silence.
“Answer me.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“His name is Samuel.”
“Dr. Samuel Varela?”
His eyes snapped toward Valeria.
“How did you find that name?”
So he knew.
I leaned forward.
“Why did you meet him?”
Diego’s face tightened.
“It wasn’t what you think.”
I almost laughed.
“That sentence is usually what people say right before explaining exactly what I should think.”
He looked at me.
“Laura, there are things you don’t understand.”
“Then explain them.”
“I can’t.”
Valeria’s voice became cold.
“You can, and you will.”
Diego looked at her.
“This isn’t your business.”
“It became my business when your actions threatened my client’s legal and financial rights.”
Diego leaned back.
Then he looked at me.
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
“You planned to.”
“No.”
“You wrote an email.”
His face changed.
“You saw that?”
“Yes.”
He closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then:
“Paula wasn’t supposed to see it.”
My heart dropped.
“What?”
He opened his eyes.
“That email was never meant for Paula.”
Valeria frowned.
“Then why did you send it to her?”
“I didn’t.”
Silence.
“What?”
“I didn’t send that email.”
Valeria looked at me.
Then at Diego.
“Are you saying the email is fake?”
“Yes.”
I felt a chill.
“Then why does it have your email address?”
“I don’t know.”
“Your words?”
“I never wrote them.”
“Your signature?”
“I didn’t sign it.”
Valeria opened her laptop.
“We have metadata.”
Diego stared at her.
She continued.
“The email originated from your account.”
He looked genuinely stunned.
“No.”
“Do you deny sending it?”
“Yes.”
“Then someone accessed your account.”
Diego’s face went pale.
I watched him carefully.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who had your password?”
He hesitated.
Then he whispered:
“Paula.”
My stomach turned.
“She had access?”
“She knew my password.”
I stared at him.
“How?”
He looked away.
“I gave it to her.”
Valeria leaned back.
“This is getting interesting.”
Diego suddenly looked at me.
“Laura, you have to believe me.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
His eyes filled.
“I’m telling the truth.”
“You lied to me for months.”
“I know.”
“You cheated on me.”
“I know.”
“You abandoned me.”
“I know.”
“You planned to destroy my reputation.”
“I didn’t.”
“You expect me to believe you now?”
He had no answer.
Then I asked the question that had been burning inside me.
“Why did you go to Dr. Varela?”
His expression changed again.
This time, fear.
Real fear.
“I can’t tell you.”
“Why?”
“Because if I tell you, you’re in danger.”
I stared at him.
“I’m already in danger.”
“No.”
He leaned forward.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then make me understand.”
He looked toward the security camera.
Then lowered his voice.
“Someone has been manipulating both of us.”
I frowned.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then why are you protecting them?”
“Because I don’t know what they are capable of.”
Valeria stood.
“This meeting is over.”
Diego looked at her.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“Laura, please.”
I didn’t move.
He whispered:
“Do you remember the week before our wedding?”
I frowned.
“Yes.”
“Your father received a phone call.”
I froze.
“What about my father?”
“He was told not to let you marry me.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Diego’s eyes filled with tears.
“He ignored it.”
“Who called him?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then how do you know?”
“Because I was there.”
I stared at him.
“You were there?”
He nodded.
“I heard the conversation.”
My mind raced.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of whom?”
He looked at me.
“Dr. Varela.”
I couldn’t breathe.
The room became silent.
“Why would a doctor threaten my father?”
Diego shook his head.
“He wasn’t threatening him.”
“Then what was he doing?”
“He was warning him.”
“About what?”
Diego swallowed.
“About you.”
My skin prickled.
“Why?”
He looked directly at me.
“Because your father wasn’t your biological father.”
Everything stopped.
My heart.
My thoughts.
My breath.
I stared at Diego.
“What did you say?”
He repeated it.
“Your father wasn’t your biological father.”
I laughed.
“No.”
“Laura—”
“No.”
“You need to listen.”
“No!”
I stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.
“My father raised me.”
“I know.”
“He loved me.”
“I know.”
“He was my father.”
“Yes.”
“Then what are you talking about?”
Diego’s voice broke.
“I’m talking about biology.”
I looked at Valeria.
She was staring at Diego.
“Do you have proof?”
He nodded.
“I saw the records.”
“What records?”
“Your mother’s.”
My heart sank.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“What does my mother have to do with Dr. Varela?”
Diego stared at the floor.
“Everything.”
I felt dizzy.
Valeria stepped toward me.
“Laura, sit down.”
I couldn’t.
I needed answers.
Now.
“Where are the records?”
Diego reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
He placed it on the table.
“I took this from Dr. Varela’s office.”
Valeria immediately stopped him.
“You stole medical records?”
“I stole copies.”
“That’s still potentially illegal.”
“I didn’t care.”
He looked at me.
“I needed to know why he had your mother’s name in his files.”
My hands shook.
“My mother’s name?”
“Yes.”
I picked up the envelope.
There was one word written across it.
LAURA.
My name.
Not my mother’s.
Mine.
I looked at Diego.
“How long have you known?”
He didn’t answer.
“How long?”
“Six months.”
I felt betrayed all over again.
“You knew for six months?”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing?”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You don’t get to use that excuse anymore.”
“I know.”
“Six months, Diego!”
“I was trying to find out the truth.”
“And instead you cheated on me?”
He looked away.
“I made terrible decisions.”
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a medical report.
I read the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
The words blurred.
Valeria took it from me.
She read silently.
Her face changed.
“What?”
She looked at me.
“Laura…”
“What?”
She turned the page toward me.
There was a date.
The date of my birth.
And beneath it:
Genetic material donor: Samuel Varela.
My knees nearly gave out.
“No.”
Valeria grabbed my arm.
“Sit.”
I sat.
My entire body was trembling.
Dr. Samuel Varela.
The man from my wedding.
The man from the medical facility.
The man Diego had been meeting.
The man who had apparently been connected to my birth.
My voice came out barely above a whisper.
“Is he my father?”
Diego shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Valeria looked at the report.
“This isn’t enough to establish that.”
“But why is his name here?”
“I don’t know.”
I stared at the paper.
Then I saw another name.
A woman’s name.
My mother’s.
And beside it was a handwritten notation:
Embryo transfer — successful.
I stopped breathing.
Embryo transfer?
I looked at Diego.
“What is this?”
He looked terrified.
“I told you.”
“What?”
“Someone has been hiding the truth.”
I looked at Valeria.
“Was I adopted?”
She shook her head.
“Not necessarily.”
“Then what does this mean?”
She didn’t know.
None of us did.
But there was one person who might.
My mother.
I hadn’t spoken to her about any of this because I was afraid of what she might say.
Now I knew I had to.
That evening, I drove to her house.
She opened the door.
The moment she saw my face, she knew something was wrong.
“Laura?”
I held up the document.
“Mom.”
She froze.
“Where did you get that?”
My heart stopped.
She knew.
“You recognize it.”
She didn’t answer.
“Mom.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Come inside.”
I walked in.
She closed the door.
For several seconds, she simply stood there.
Then she whispered:
“I prayed you would never find out.”
My stomach dropped.
“Find out what?”
She sat down.
I remained standing.
“Tell me.”
She looked at me.
“You weren’t supposed to know.”
“Know what?”
She began crying.
And then she said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew about my life.
“Laura…”
She wiped her eyes.
“You were born from a secret.”
I felt numb.
“What secret?”
She looked toward the window.
“Your father knew.”
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“What did he know?”
“That you were not conceived the way you thought.”
I couldn’t speak.
She continued.
“Years ago, I couldn’t have children.”
I closed my eyes.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“So I had treatment.”
“What kind?”
She hesitated.
“IVF.”
I stared at her.
“And Dr. Varela?”
She nodded.
“He was involved.”
My heart pounded.
“Then who was the donor?”
She looked at me.
Her lips trembled.
“I never knew.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“The clinic told us it was anonymous.”
“Then why is his name in my records?”
She began crying harder.
“I don’t know.”
I stepped closer.
“Mom.”
She covered her face.
“I don’t know.”
“Then who is my biological father?”
She lowered her hands.
“I don’t know.”
My heart sank.
But then she whispered:
“Your father suspected.”
“What?”
“He spent years trying to find out.”
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because he promised me he would protect you.”
“From what?”
She looked at me.
“From Dr. Varela.”
I felt the same chill I had felt in the clinic.
“Why?”
My mother shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
But I knew she was hiding something.
“Mom.”
She looked away.
“Tell me everything.”
She was silent.
Then the doorbell rang.
We both froze.
Another ring.
My mother looked terrified.
“Don’t answer it.”
I stared at her.
“Who is it?”
She whispered:
“I don’t know.”
The bell rang again.
Then someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
My mother grabbed my wrist.
“Laura…”
“What?”
“Promise me you won’t open that door.”
I looked toward it.
“Why?”
She whispered:
“Because whoever is outside…”
Another knock.
“…has been waiting eight years for you to discover the truth.”
My blood ran cold.
Then my phone vibrated.
A new message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
There was only one sentence.
Your mother is lying.
I looked at her.
She saw my face.
And before I could say anything, she whispered:
“Laura…”
Her voice broke.
“I didn’t tell you the worst part.”
The knocking stopped.
Silence.
Then she leaned toward me and whispered:
“The man outside isn’t the one you should be afraid of.”
I stared at her.
“Then who?”
She looked directly into my eyes.
“Your husband.”
I turned toward the door.
And at that exact moment, my phone rang.
The caller ID showed:
Diego.
I answered.
His voice was barely audible.
“Laura, get out of your mother’s house.”
My blood froze.
“Why?”
He whispered:
“Because I just found out who sent you that photograph.”
“Who?”
There was a long silence.
Then Diego said:
“It was Paula.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“She sent the photograph.”
“Why?”
His breathing became heavier.
“Because she wants to warn you.”
“Warn me about what?”
Diego’s voice dropped.
“About your mother.”
I turned slowly.
My mother was standing behind me.
Crying.
And holding something in her hand.
A photograph.
An old photograph.
One I had never seen before.
She looked at me.
And whispered:
“I can finally tell you who your father really was.”
Then she turned the photograph around.
And I saw the face.
The same face from my wedding.
The same face from the medical facility.
The same face from the hidden records.
Dr. Samuel Varela.
But beneath his photograph was a date.
And that date was not eight years ago.
It was twenty-nine years ago.
The year I was born.
My mother looked at me through her tears.
And said:
“Laura… Samuel Varela isn’t just connected to your birth.”
She paused.
“He has been searching for you ever since you were born.”
And then she added the sentence that made my entire body go cold:
“He believes you have something that belongs to him.”
