PART 5 — THE WOMAN WHO CALLED HERSELF LILY’S MOTHER
“It’s time you met Lily’s real mother.”
The words seemed to freeze the entire night.
I stared at the dark doorway of the abandoned building.
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
Then I heard it again.
A baby’s cry.
Soft.
Weak.
But unmistakable.
“Lily…”
I started toward the building.
Officer Ramirez caught my shoulder.
“Stay behind me.”
“I need my daughter.”
“We’re going in together.”
Daniel stood beside us, staring at Michael.
His father looked nothing like the man Daniel had imagined during twenty-two years of silence.
Older.
Thinner.
His hair was almost completely gray.
But the eyes were the same.
Daniel’s eyes.
“Dad,” Daniel whispered.
Michael looked at him.
“I know.”
“You’re alive.”
“I know.”
“Why did you leave?”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Because I had no choice.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You always had a choice.”
Patricia suddenly interrupted.
“Enough.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“No.”
His voice was different now.
There was no hesitation.
“No more.”
Patricia stared at him.
“You don’t understand.”
“I’ve spent my entire life not understanding because you lied to me.”
Her face tightened.
“I protected you.”
“You destroyed my family.”
“You don’t know what I did.”
“I know you stole a baby.”
Patricia flinched.
Michael looked away.
I stepped closer.
“Who is Lily’s real mother?”
Patricia didn’t answer.
The voice from inside the building spoke again.
“Emily.”
I looked toward the darkness.
“Who are you?”
A woman’s silhouette appeared behind the glass.
She was standing several feet inside the entrance.
“I’ve been waiting for you.”
Officer Ramirez raised her weapon.
“Show your hands.”
The woman slowly lifted them.
“I don’t want to hurt anyone.”
“Step into the light.”
She did.
And I felt something inside me break.
She looked familiar.
Not because I had seen her before.
Because she looked like Lily.
The same dark eyes.
The same shape around the mouth.
The same small crescent-shaped birthmark near her left wrist.
I stared at her.
She looked at me.
Then she said:
“My name is Rachel.”
I couldn’t speak.
“Rachel what?”
“Rachel Carter.”
Michael suddenly looked terrified.
Patricia whispered:
“No.”
Rachel smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at his father.
“Dad?”
Michael shook his head.
“Don’t.”
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“You never told him.”
Michael looked down.
Rachel turned to Daniel.
“You deserve to know.”
Patricia stepped forward.
“Rachel, stop.”
“Twenty-two years is long enough.”
I looked between them.
“Who is Rachel?”
Rachel answered without taking her eyes off Daniel.
“I am your husband’s sister.”
Daniel went completely still.
“No.”
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.”
“But…”
“You were told I died.”
Daniel stared at Patricia.
“My sister died?”
Patricia said nothing.
Rachel continued.
“I didn’t die.”
My hands began shaking.
“Then where have you been?”
Rachel looked at Patricia.
“Ask her.”
Patricia’s expression changed.
“You weren’t supposed to survive.”
Silence.
Daniel took a step backward.
“What did you just say?”
Patricia realized what she had said.
“That’s not what I meant.”
Rachel laughed bitterly.
“It never is with you.”
I looked at Rachel.
“Are you Lily’s mother?”
She stared at me.
Then slowly shook her head.
“No.”
I felt confused.
“Then who is?”
Rachel’s eyes moved toward the second floor.
“She is.”
I followed her gaze.
The baby’s crying had stopped.
“Who?”
Rachel looked at me.
“You.”
I froze.
“What?”
Rachel walked toward me.
“Lily is your daughter.”
“I know.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You don’t know the whole truth.”
I stared at her.
“What truth?”
Rachel looked at Michael.
He finally spoke.
“Emily…”
I turned toward him.
“Tell me.”
He swallowed.
“Your pregnancy was manipulated.”
I didn’t understand.
“What does that mean?”
“Your medical records were altered.”
Daniel looked at him.
“By who?”
Michael didn’t answer.
I looked at Patricia.
She looked away.
“By her?”
Michael nodded.
Patricia closed her eyes.
I felt sick.
“Why?”
Michael took a breath.
“Because Patricia wanted Lily.”
“Why?”
“Because she believed Lily was the child she lost.”
I stared at him.
“Rachel’s child?”
He nodded.
“No.”
Rachel stepped forward.
“Not my child.”
She touched her chest.
“Mine.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You’re saying Lily is your daughter?”
Rachel shook her head.
“No.”
“Then whose?”
Rachel looked directly at me.
“Emily…”
She whispered:
“Lily is the daughter of the woman Patricia stole from me.”
I couldn’t understand.
“You’re saying someone stole a baby from you?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Rachel looked at Patricia.
“My mother.”
Daniel’s face went white.
“My mother stole your baby?”
Rachel nodded.
“But why?”
“Because she believed the baby belonged to our family.”
I shook my head.
“This makes no sense.”
Rachel took a step toward me.
“Your daughter was born through a fertility procedure.”
I stared at her.
“Yes.”
“You were told it was your genetic child.”
“Yes.”
Rachel looked at Michael.
Michael nodded.
“It wasn’t.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Michael’s voice broke.
“Your daughter was conceived using an embryo that was never supposed to be transferred to you.”
I felt the room spinning.
“What embryo?”
Rachel looked at me.
“Mine.”
Silence.
I couldn’t breathe.
Rachel continued.
“Twenty-two years ago, my mother stole an embryo from a fertility clinic.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You were sixteen.”
“No.”
Rachel shook her head.
“I was twenty-four.”
Daniel frowned.
“But Mom told me you died when you were sixteen.”
Rachel smiled sadly.
“She lied about my age too.”
I looked at Patricia.
“You stole an embryo?”
Patricia finally spoke.
“I was trying to fix what was taken from my family.”
“What was taken?”
“My daughter.”
Rachel’s expression hardened.
“You didn’t lose a daughter.”
“You abandoned me.”
“I was forced out.”
“You ran away.”
“Because you threatened me.”
Michael stepped between them.
“Stop.”
Rachel looked at him.
“You don’t get to tell me to stop.”
Daniel looked at his father.
“You knew?”
Michael lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Daniel looked devastated.
“You knew my mother stole something?”
“I tried to stop her.”
“And?”
“She threatened to expose me.”
“Expose you for what?”
Michael didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“For what?”
Michael finally looked at him.
“I was the doctor who handled the transfer.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You helped her?”
“I didn’t know what she intended.”
Rachel interrupted.
“You knew enough.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“She was supposed to return the embryo.”
“But she didn’t.”
“No.”
I looked at Patricia.
“What happened to it?”
Patricia stared at me.
“Nothing.”
“Where is it?”
She didn’t answer.
Rachel whispered:
“Inside Lily.”
My entire body went numb.
“No.”
Rachel nodded.
“That embryo became your daughter.”
I looked toward the building.
“But Lily was born three weeks ago.”
“Yes.”
“And you said this happened twenty-two years ago.”
Rachel nodded.
“The embryo was frozen.”
I couldn’t speak.
Daniel looked at his father.
“So Lily was created twenty-two years ago?”
Michael nodded.
“Yes.”
My mind struggled to understand.
An embryo created decades earlier.
Stored.
Transferred.
Then implanted into me.
Lily had been waiting before I even met Daniel.
Before I knew Patricia.
Before I knew any of them.
Rachel looked at me.
“That’s why your records were altered.”
“Why?”
“Because if anyone traced the embryo, they’d find out who it belonged to.”
I swallowed.
“Who?”
Rachel said:
“Me.”
I looked at her.
“You’re Lily’s biological mother?”
Rachel nodded.
“Genetically, yes.”
My chest tightened.
“But I carried her.”
“I know.”
“I gave birth to her.”
“I know.”
“She is my daughter.”
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
“Then why are you calling her yours?”
“Because she carries my DNA.”
I stared at her.
The distinction felt impossible.
She stepped closer.
“But I didn’t come here to take her from you.”
“Then why?”
Rachel looked toward Patricia.
“Because your daughter is in danger.”
“From Patricia?”
“From everyone.”
I felt cold.
“What does that mean?”
Rachel took a breath.
“The embryo wasn’t stolen for sentimental reasons.”
Michael whispered:
“Rachel…”
She continued.
“It was part of an experiment.”
I stared at her.
“What experiment?”
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“Our father was studying something.”
“Studying what?”
“Genetic inheritance.”
Daniel frowned.
“That’s not illegal.”
“No.”
Rachel shook her head.
“But what he did with it was.”
She turned to me.
“He wasn’t trying to create a child.”
“Then what was he trying to create?”
Rachel’s answer came quietly.
“A genetic match.”
“For what?”
She looked at Lily’s hospital bracelet.
“For a patient.”
My heart stopped.
“Who?”
Rachel looked at Patricia.
Patricia whispered:
“My daughter.”
I stared at her.
“Rachel?”
Patricia shook her head.
“No.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“My other daughter.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Who?”
Patricia didn’t answer.
Rachel did.
“Your mother had another child.”
Daniel’s face went blank.
“Who?”
Rachel looked at me.
“Lily.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“It does.”
“No.”
“Your mother had a daughter before you.”
“But the record says…”
“Your mother erased the record.”
I looked at Patricia.
“Why?”
Patricia finally broke.
She sank onto a bench near the wall.
“Because she was sick.”
“Who?”
“My first daughter.”
Daniel sat beside her.
“What was her name?”
Patricia covered her face.
“Anna.”
I felt a strange chill.
“Anna who?”
“Anna Miller.”
Daniel looked stunned.
“I’ve never heard that name.”
“I know.”
“You had another daughter?”
“Yes.”
“What happened to her?”
Patricia’s voice broke.
“She was dying.”
Silence.
“She had a rare blood disorder.”
Daniel stared at her.
“And you used Rachel’s embryo?”
Patricia shook her head.
“Not at first.”
“Then what?”
“We needed a genetic match.”
I looked at Lily.
Patricia continued.
“Anna needed a donor.”
“Bone marrow?”
“Yes.”
“Then why an embryo?”
“Because Anna’s condition was genetic.”
Michael looked away.
I realized something.
“You created a child to save another child.”
Patricia didn’t deny it.
“I was desperate.”
Rachel’s voice was bitter.
“You stole my embryo.”
“I was trying to save Anna.”
“You had no right.”
“I was her mother.”
“And I was the genetic mother of the embryo.”
Patricia cried.
“She was dying.”
Rachel stepped closer.
“And you lied to everyone.”
Patricia whispered:
“I made a mistake.”
“A mistake?”
Rachel’s voice rose.
“You erased my identity.”
“I was desperate.”
“You destroyed your husband’s life.”
“I loved him.”
“You threatened him.”
“I protected my family.”
“You kidnapped a baby.”
“I didn’t kidnap her.”
I stepped forward.
“Then where is Anna?”
Patricia looked at me.
“She died.”
The hallway went silent.
“When?”
“Twenty-two years ago.”
I stared at her.
“Then why was Lily created from her embryo?”
Patricia looked confused.
“I don’t understand.”
Rachel’s face changed.
“Mom…”
“What?”
Rachel looked at Michael.
“You told her?”
Michael shook his head.
“Tell her.”
Michael looked at Patricia.
“Anna didn’t die.”
Patricia stood.
“What?”
Michael’s voice was barely audible.
“She survived.”
Patricia stared at him.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You told me she died.”
“I had to.”
“Why?”
“Because she was never the patient.”
Patricia’s face drained of color.
Michael looked at me.
“Anna was never sick.”
I felt my stomach drop.
“Then who was?”
Michael answered:
“You.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?”
He continued.
“Emily, your medical records from before Lily’s birth were altered because you were part of the original study.”
I shook my head.
“I was never part of any study.”
“You didn’t know.”
“Why would I be?”
“Because your genetic profile was the match they needed.”
“For whom?”
Michael looked at Lily.
“For Anna.”
I stared at him.
“But Anna was your daughter.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she need my DNA?”
“She didn’t.”
I waited.
Michael whispered:
“Anna was the donor.”
I didn’t understand.
He continued.
“The child who was supposed to receive the embryo wasn’t Anna.”
My heart raced.
“Then who?”
Michael looked at Patricia.
Patricia began crying.
“Me.”
I froze.
“What?”
Michael said:
“Patricia had a terminal condition.”
Daniel stared at his mother.
“My mother?”
Michael nodded.
“She was dying.”
Patricia shook her head.
“I wasn’t supposed to survive.”
“You did.”
“Because of the embryo.”
“No.”
Michael looked at me.
“Because of Lily.”
I felt sick.
“You’re saying…”
He nodded.
“Lily’s genetic material was used to save Patricia.”
I stared at the woman who had slapped me.
The woman who had tried to control my baby.
The woman who had lied for decades.
And suddenly I understood why she had wanted Lily.
Not because she loved her.
Because she believed Lily was the reason she was alive.
Patricia looked at me through tears.
“I never wanted to hurt her.”
“You hit me.”
“I was afraid.”
“You caused her injury.”
“I didn’t mean for her to fall.”
“You lied.”
“I was terrified.”
“You tried to take her.”
“I thought she belonged to me.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“She doesn’t.”
Patricia looked at Lily’s empty hospital bed through the open doors.
“She saved my life.”
“And now you nearly took hers.”
Patricia lowered her head.
Rachel stepped forward.
“There’s more.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
Rachel’s expression changed.
“The genetic procedure wasn’t successful.”
“What?”
“Lily isn’t just a match.”
“What is she?”
Rachel looked toward the building.
“She carries something else.”
“What?”
“Something your father discovered.”
I looked at Michael.
“What did he discover?”
Michael’s face became pale.
“An inherited marker.”
“Meaning?”
“It makes Lily extremely valuable.”
“To whom?”
He didn’t answer.
Rachel did.
“To the people who funded the experiment.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who funded it?”
Michael looked at the darkness.
Then whispered:
“They’ve been watching Lily since before she was born.”
A vehicle suddenly appeared at the end of the road.
Black.
No headlights.
It stopped.
Three doors opened.
Men stepped out.
Officer Ramirez immediately raised her weapon.
“Everyone inside!”
Michael shouted:
“Run!”
The men started moving toward us.
Rachel grabbed my arm.
“Where’s Lily?”
I looked at her.
“The hospital.”
Rachel’s face changed.
“No.”
“What?”
She shook her head.
“The baby in the hospital isn’t Lily.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
Rachel whispered:
“They took the wrong baby.”
My heart stopped.
“No.”
“Patricia switched the babies.”
I looked at Patricia.
She was crying.
“I had to.”
“You what?”
“I couldn’t let them take Lily.”
I stepped toward her.
“Where is my daughter?”
Patricia looked at me.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“She was never in the hospital.”
I felt the world disappear.
“Where is she?”
Patricia pointed toward the abandoned building.
“Room 217.”
The men outside were getting closer.
Officer Ramirez shouted:
“Inside! Now!”
I ran toward the building.
Daniel followed.
Rachel followed.
Michael stayed behind.
I turned.
“Michael!”
He looked at me.
“Go!”
“You’re coming.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“Why?”
He looked toward the approaching men.
“Because they came for me.”
Then Patricia grabbed my arm.
“Emily.”
I turned.
Her face was full of fear.
“There’s something you need to know before you open that door.”
“What?”
She whispered:
“Lily isn’t the only baby in Room 217.”
My blood went cold.
“What?”
Patricia looked at Daniel.
Then Rachel.
Then me.
“There are two.”
I stared at her.
“Two babies?”
She nodded.
“One is Lily.”
“And the other?”
Patricia’s eyes filled with tears.
“The baby they thought was dead twenty-two years ago.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“That’s impossible.”
Patricia whispered:
“No.”
Then the building lights suddenly came on.
And from inside Room 217 came two cries.
One was Lily.
The other was a newborn baby I had never seen.
Daniel grabbed my hand.
“Emily…”
I stared at the doorway.
Two babies.
Two cries.
Twenty-two years of lies.
And somewhere inside that room was the answer to the question that had haunted Patricia’s entire family.
Who was the baby that disappeared twenty-two years ago?
I stepped through the doorway.
And before the door closed behind me, I heard a man’s voice from the darkness:
“Welcome home, Emily.”
I froze.
Because I recognized that voice.
It was the same voice that had called me earlier.
Michael’s voice.
But Michael was standing outside.
Which meant someone else had been pretending to be him.
And whoever that person was…
had been inside Room 217 the entire time.
