PART 2: My Husband Gave Me $50 Million to Divorce Him So He Could Marry the Woman Pregnant With His Twins. But After I Signed the Papers and Flew to California, One Message Sent His Mother Across the Country to Bring Me Back…

Part 2: The Price of Secrets

I stared at Cordelia’s last message for so long the phone screen dimmed.
There is something about Phoebe’s twins that Charles does not know.
My first instinct was to delete it. Cordelia Stanhope had spent years making me feel small, making me question my body, making me believe that my inability to give Charles a child was the fundamental failure of my marriage. Now she was texting me cryptic messages from an airport somewhere over the middle of America, asking me not to leave.
I set the phone face-down on the table.
Then I picked it up again.
What? I typed.
Three dots appeared immediately. She was already on the plane, typing from the air.
Not via message. This requires a conversation. I will arrive in San Francisco at 11:47 PM. I am renting a car and driving to you. We need to speak before Charles realizes what has happened.
Before Charles realizes what has happened.
Those words sat with me like a stone.
I was pregnant. The woman he had left me for was pregnant with twins. And Cordelia, of all people, was flying across the country because there was something about Phoebe’s babies that Charles didn’t know.

The timing of it felt impossible.

I called Dr. Porter back.

“I need to ask you something confidentially,” I said. “Could Phoebe Bennett be carrying children that aren’t biologically Charles’s?”

There was a pause.

“Hannah, I can’t discuss another patient’s medical information. But I can tell you that if you’re asking that question, you might want to consider why someone else’s paternity would matter to you right now.”

After we hung up, I sat with that thought.

Why would it matter?

Unless Cordelia knew something that changed everything about the settlement Charles had forced on me. Unless the money wasn’t actually about Phoebe’s pregnancy at all.

I spent the next seven hours in a state of suspended anxiety, pacing the California house that suddenly felt both too large and too confining. I showered, changed clothes, ordered dinner I didn’t eat. I looked up flights back to Boston, then closed the browser. I texted my attorney asking if there was any legal recourse if the settlement terms were based on fraudulent circumstances, then deleted the message before sending it.

By 11:30 PM, I was standing in the driveway, watching the dark road.

Cordelia’s rental car appeared like something out of a film—a black sedan that seemed to materialize from the fog. She parked with precision, killed the engine, and emerged looking exactly as she always did: immaculate, composed, and completely unaffected by the fact that she had just spent six hours flying across the country.

She wore a charcoal Chanel suit. Her gray hair was perfectly set. Not a single thread was out of place.

“Thank you for letting me come,” she said.

It wasn’t a question, but I answered anyway.

“I don’t think I had much choice.”

“You always have choices, Hannah. That’s what Charles never understood about you. That’s also why you left.”

She walked past me into the house as if she owned it, her heels clicking against the Italian tile floor I had fallen in love with.

“Coffee?” I asked.

“Bourbon.”

I poured two glasses and we sat in the living room overlooking the dark ocean. For several minutes, neither of us spoke. Cordelia simply held the glass and looked out at the water, her expression unreadable.

Finally, she turned to me.

“Do you know why Charles married you?”

“No. But I’m sure you’re going to tell me.”

“He married you because you were the only woman he ever met who didn’t want something from the Stanhope name. You wanted the man. And when the man disappointed you—which he inevitably would—you still chose to stay. That was the one thing Charles valued about you. Loyalty.”

“That loyalty was clearly misplaced.”

“Yes,” Cordelia said simply. “But that’s not why I’m here.”

She took a drink.

“Phoebe Bennett came to work for Charles eighteen months ago. She was extraordinarily talented at her job. She was also extraordinarily talented at something else: manipulating men.”

I felt something tighten in my chest.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying that before Phoebe, there was Margaret. And before Margaret, there was someone else. Charles’s affairs are not the result of new romantic feeling, Hannah. They are the result of a very specific predatory pattern.”

“Why would you know about his previous affairs?”

Cordelia’s expression hardened.

“Because I hired a private investigator five years ago. Not because I suspected Charles of infidelity, but because I was concerned about the character of women being drawn into our family business. I needed to understand their motivations.”

She set down her glass.

“Phoebe Bennett’s real name is Phoebe Thorne. She has a documented pattern of infiltrating wealthy families, positioning herself as indispensable, and then leveraging either pregnancy or some other crisis to extract settlements. She’s done it three times before Charles. Three men. Three payments.”

I felt the room tilt slightly.

“But the pregnancy—”

“Is very real. The twins are also very real. What isn’t real is the identity of their father.”

The words seemed to come from underwater.

“Charles isn’t—”

“No. Charles is not. According to the investigator’s recent report, Phoebe has been intimate with multiple men during the relevant window. The twins could belong to any of them. Possibly to a man named Derek Matheson, who happens to be a venture capitalist worth approximately two hundred million dollars.”

I gripped the edge of the sofa.

“Why didn’t you tell Charles?”

Cordelia smiled, and it was the coldest expression I had ever seen on her face.

“Because Charles needed to believe that those twins were his. Because when he discovered the truth—and he will discover it—his shame and humiliation would be so complete that he would finally understand what it means to be used by someone he trusted.”

She leaned forward.

“I allowed Phoebe to play out her scheme because I wanted my son to experience consequence. But I also did it because I wanted you to have something, Hannah.”

“What?”

“Time. And distance. And the absolute certainty that when Charles comes looking for you—and he will come looking for you—it won’t be because he suddenly realized he loved you. It will be because he lost everything and needs someone to blame.”

My mind was spinning.

“The settlement. Did you know Charles was going to offer it?”

“No. But I wasn’t surprised. Phoebe is very good at what she does. She convinced Charles that the only way to protect his future was to remove any potential legal complications from his past. She convinced him that removing you was a kindness.”

Cordelia picked up her glass again.

“I flew here to tell you something important, Hannah. Not because I suddenly developed affection for you, but because I respect the choice you made in leaving. And I wanted you to know that your instincts about my son were correct. He was always going to disappoint you. But he was never going to be worth the years you already gave him.”

The weight of what she was telling me crashed down slowly.

“There’s more, isn’t there?” I whispered. “You wouldn’t be here just to tell me that Charles got played by someone who played him before.”

Cordelia stood and walked to the window, her reflection ghostly against the dark glass.

“The investigator’s report includes financial records. Phoebe has been receiving payments from Derek Matheson since week six of her pregnancy. Substantial payments. The kind of payments that suggest he knows these are his children.”

She turned back to me.

“But there is one other detail in those records that I find particularly interesting.”

“What detail?”

“Three months ago, Phoebe’s payments suddenly increased. The investigator traced the source. The additional funds are coming from an offshore account managed by someone named Marina Bennett—Phoebe’s biological mother, who has been living in the Cayman Islands for the past decade.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why does that matter?”

“Because Marina Bennett used to work for the Stanhope family. She was our nanny. She left in 1987 when Charles was four years old.”

The silence that followed stretched between us like a physical thing.

“What are you saying?”

Cordelia’s expression was utterly unreadable.

“I’m saying that Phoebe is not simply a woman who exploits wealthy men, Hannah. She is a woman with a personal vendetta. She is not simply trying to extract money from the Stanhope family. She is trying to destroy it.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know. The investigator is still compiling information about Marina’s departure. But I suspect it involves something from the past that my late husband did. Something significant enough that Marina Bennett spent thirty years planning her daughter’s revenge.”

Cordelia walked toward me, and for the first time, I saw something like vulnerability in her expression.

“Which brings me to the real reason I came here. The reason I needed to see you in person.”

“I’m listening.”

“You’re pregnant.”

I froze.

“How could you possibly—”

“Because I know your fertility doctor personally. She called me after you left Boston. She was concerned that you had received devastating news about your ability to have children, and she wanted to ensure you were emotionally supported.”

Cordelia sat back down.

“She called to check on you, Hannah. She didn’t expect you to answer that phone with relief.”

My hands were shaking.

“Does Charles know?”

“No. No one knows except Dr. Porter and now me.”

“And you came all the way here to tell me that Cordelia Stanhope, of all people, is concerned about my wellbeing?”

“No,” Cordelia said quietly. “I came to tell you that Cordelia Stanhope is terrified about what happens when Charles discovers that you have his biological child, and he doesn’t.”

The implication of her words settled over me like fog.

“He can’t know.”

“No,” Cordelia agreed. “He cannot.”

She stood and walked to the foyer, retrieving her purse.

“I have taken the liberty of arranging for the investigator to move up his timeline. He will have complete information about Marina Bennett’s past and her connection to our family within seventy-two hours. Whatever vendetta Phoebe is executing, we need to understand it before Charles does.”

She paused at the door.

“I’m going back to Boston tomorrow. I will tell my son that I came to California to convince you to return, and that you refused. I will tell him you wanted nothing to do with the family. This will be his last attempt at contact before he fully commits to Phoebe and the fiction of her pregnancy.”

“And if Derek Matheson claims the twins?”

“Then Phoebe will produce a DNA test showing Charles as the father. She has been planning this for decades, Hannah. She will have contingencies.”

I watched her hand move toward the door handle.

“Cordelia, wait.”

She turned.

“Why are you helping me? You spent twelve years making me feel like I wasn’t good enough for your family. Now you’re protecting me from them.”

For a moment, her expression softened into something almost human.

“Because I spent thirty years thinking that Marina Bennett was a disgruntled employee I fired for incompetence. And now I realize she might have been something else entirely. Because I raised a son who was so emotionally disconnected that he couldn’t recognize manipulation when it was sleeping in his bed. And because you, Hannah, were the only person in that family who ever questioned anything.”

She opened the door.

“Also,” she added, “my great-grandchildren deserve to know their mother was someone who walked away instead of staying in a beautiful prison.”

Then she was gone, her footsteps fading down the driveway.

I stood in the doorway for a long time, one hand unconsciously moving to my still-flat belly.

Fifty million dollars.

A baby.

A secret that would destroy everything.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number….
