PART 2: The Medic Recognized My Brother by Another Name

emergency department, scans showed a fractured rib, a concussion, extensive bruising along his jaw and torso, and swelling in his right wrist.
Nothing had punctured his lung, but the doctor said the shallow breathing was caused by pain and panic.
The words fractured rib made me grip the edge of the hospital chair until my fingers hurt.
Mark had called it discipline.
My parents had called it deserved.
A nurse photographed every visible injury.
A child-protection specialist arrived, followed by a detective trained to interview children.
They asked me to remain where Eli could see me without answering for him.
Eli stared at the blanket for a long time before he began.
Grandma and Grandpa had arrived shortly after I left for the party.
Mark came later.
They told Eli they needed a paper from my office and that I had forgotten to leave it for them.
Eli knew I did not allow anyone into that room.
He told them to call me.

My father took his phone.

Mark searched the desk while my mother stood by the door.

When he could not find the blue folder, he demanded that Eli tell him where it was.

Eli knew about the folder because he had seen me place it inside a locked drawer several weeks earlier.

He did not know what it contained.

He only knew I had told him it was important and private.

When he refused to answer, Mark grabbed his wrist.

Eli warned him that the office camera recorded movement.

The first blow knocked Eli against the desk.

The second struck his ribs.

He tried to reach the front door, but my father blocked the hallway and told him to stop being dramatic.

My mother found the spare drawer key in the kitchen cabinet.

Mark took the folder and tucked it under his jacket.

Eli tried once more to get outside.

Mark caught him beside the front door.

“He said I was going to ruin everything,” Eli whispered.

“Then Grandma said he had to scare me enough so I wouldn’t tell you.”

The detective’s pen stopped moving for half a second.

“What happened after that?”

“I couldn’t breathe.

They told me to get up.

I tried, but I fell.”

He looked at me.

“I heard your key.”

I leaned over carefully and kissed his hair.

“You did everything right.”

The blue folder had begun with my grandfather, Arthur Bennett.

He owned the house where Eli and I lived.

After my divorce, he had invited us to stay there, saying an empty house did no good while his granddaughter was paying rent for a cramped apartment.

During the last two years of his life, I managed his medical appointments, groceries, repairs, and bills.

My parents visited when photographs could be taken.

Mark appeared when money was mentioned.

Six months before Grandpa died, he transferred the house to me through a properly recorded deed.

He reserved the right to live there for the rest of his life and named Eli as the beneficiary if anything happened to me.

My parents were furious when they learned about it.

They insisted Grandpa had meant the property for the entire family.

Mark claimed he deserved a share because he was the eldest son……..
