PART 3: The Medic Recognized My Brother by Another Name

that the deed had already been recorded, they accused me of manipulating an old man.
Grandpa had anticipated that.
He left a signed letter explaining his decision.
He wrote that I was the only person who had treated him like a human being instead of an inheritance.
He also documented suspicious withdrawals from his account that occurred while my father had access to his banking information.
Claire, my attorney, had placed certified copies of the deed, the letter, bank records, and several related documents inside the blue folder.
Two weeks before the party, she had called to tell me my mother had contacted the county recorder’s office asking how to replace a supposedly lost deed.
Someone had also submitted a draft transfer document carrying what appeared to be my signature.
It was not my signature.
Claire advised me to secure every original and install a camera in the office.
I had not confronted my parents yet.
I wanted enough evidence to stop them permanently, not another argument they could twist into a story about my ingratitude.
The camera gave us that evidence.
The detective watched the recording beside my hospital chair.
At 8:57 p.m., my father entered the office and pulled open the first drawer.
At 9:01, my mother handed Mark a ring of spare keys.
At 9:06, Eli appeared in the doorway and told them to leave.

The audio was clear.

“Your mother stole this house from us,” Mark said.

“Mom doesn’t steal,” Eli answered.

My mother moved into view.

“Tell us where she keeps the blue folder.”

“No.”

My father shut the office door.

The detective glanced at me, then continued the video.

Mark seized Eli’s wrist.

Eli tried to pull away.

Mark slapped him hard enough to turn his head toward the camera.

My mother did not flinch.

She said, “Make the boy tell us where Hannah hid it.”

The rest was worse.

Mark struck Eli in the ribs.

My father blocked the door when Eli tried to escape.

My mother found the drawer key and placed it in Mark’s palm.

After Mark removed the folder, Eli shouted that the camera had recorded them.

Mark dragged him into the hallway.

The final minutes were out of frame, but the audio captured the blows, Eli’s cry, and my father saying, “Now look what you made him do.”

The detective stopped the recording.

There was no uncertainty in his face.

“I’m sending this to the officers at the house and the prosecutor tonight.”

Another call came less than twenty minutes later.

Mark’s fingerprints matched Marcus Daniel Vane, the name in the old court file.

The story my parents had built around him began to collapse.

Mark was not their biological son.

He was my mother’s nephew, born to her younger sister.

He came to live with my parents when I was three.

They raised us as siblings and told everyone they had adopted him.

They never completed a legal adoption.

As an adult, Mark sometimes used the Bennett surname and sometimes his birth name.

Under Marcus Vane, he married a woman named Rebecca Keller and became stepfather to her son, Noah.

Three years earlier, Noah was hospitalized with injuries Mark claimed came from a fall.

Aaron had responded to that call.

Rebecca later sought a protection order, and prosecutors………
