PART 4: – My CEO Husband Let His Secretary Take My Seat on the Private Jet …

PART 4: THE SECRET BEHIND THE EMPIRE

The next morning began with a phone call that changed everything.
At exactly 7:13 a.m., Alyssa’s private phone rang.
Only six people in the world had that number.
Her brother Michael was one of them.
Her father was another.
Her attorney, Bradley, was the third.
So when she saw Bradley’s name flashing across the screen, she knew immediately that something had gone wrong.
She answered.
“Bradley?”
There was a strange silence on the other end.
Then her attorney said quietly,
“Miss Vance, I need you to come to headquarters immediately.”
Alyssa sat upright in bed.
“What happened?”
“We found something.”
“What?”
“Something connected to Vanguard’s original incorporation.”
Alyssa’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain.”
“I’d rather show you in person.”
“Bradley.”
“Yes?”

“If this concerns Aaron, I want the truth before I leave this house.”

Another pause.

Then Bradley spoke.

“It concerns you.”

Alyssa felt a chill run down her spine.

“What do you mean?”

“We discovered that Vanguard Dynamics wasn’t originally supposed to belong to Aaron.”

She stopped breathing for a moment.

“What?”

“The original incorporation documents list a different controlling structure.”

“Whose?”

Bradley hesitated.

“Your family’s.”

Forty minutes later, Alyssa entered the private conference room at Vance Enterprises.

Michael was already there.

Their father, Edward Vance, sat at the end of the table with an unusually serious expression.

Bradley stood beside a large screen.

Several old folders covered the table.

Alyssa looked at her father.

“You knew?”

Edward didn’t answer immediately.

Michael looked toward him.

“Dad.”

Edward finally sighed.

“I knew there was an agreement.”

Alyssa’s eyes hardened.

“What agreement?”

Bradley activated the screen.

An old scanned document appeared.

The date was four years before Vanguard Dynamics became a billion-dollar company.

Alyssa stared at it.

Her name wasn’t there.

Neither was Aaron’s.

Instead, the agreement was between Vance Capital and a small technology company that had existed before Vanguard Dynamics.

Bradley pointed toward one paragraph.

“This was the original financing agreement.”

Alyssa leaned closer.

“Read it.”

Bradley did.

“Vance Capital agrees to provide emergency financing, intellectual property resources, strategic personnel, and executive protection in exchange for controlling rights in the event of a material breach.”

Alyssa looked confused.

“That sounds like the same arrangement we used later.”

“It gets worse.”

Bradley clicked again.

A second page appeared.

At the bottom was her father’s signature.

Edward Vance.

Alyssa turned toward him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Edward looked down.

“Because you were in love.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“You were twenty-eight years old and convinced that Aaron was going to change the world.”

Alyssa’s voice became sharper.

“And?”

“I didn’t want to destroy the first serious relationship you had ever chosen for yourself.”

Michael pushed his chair back.

“Dad, what exactly did you do?”

Edward’s face tightened.

“I protected her.”

Alyssa stared at him.

“From what?”

Edward finally looked directly at his daughter.

“From Aaron.”

Silence filled the room.

Alyssa felt something cold settle in her stomach.

“Explain.”

Edward folded his hands.

“When Aaron’s company nearly collapsed, I warned him that the money wouldn’t come without conditions.”

Alyssa frowned.

“But I was the one who transferred the $1.5 billion.”

“Yes.”

“Then what did you mean?”

Edward nodded toward Bradley.

Bradley opened another folder.

“This is the document Aaron signed immediately before receiving the first emergency transfer.”

Alyssa scanned it.

Her eyes widened.

She read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Finally, she whispered,

“He signed this?”

“Yes.”

“What does it mean?”

Bradley answered carefully.

“It means that if Vanguard Dynamics ever became financially dependent on Vance resources, Vance Enterprises would have the right to assume control if the company’s management acted against the interests of the Vance family or its protected beneficiaries.”

Alyssa stared at the document.

“Protected beneficiaries?”

Bradley looked at her.

“You.”

Her father’s voice was quiet.

“That clause was designed to protect you.”

Alyssa slowly sat down.

For four years she had believed that she was protecting Aaron.

But perhaps the opposite had been happening.

Her father had been protecting her from the consequences of loving him.

And now she had triggered the very clause she had never known existed.

Michael suddenly noticed something.

“Bradley.”

“Yes?”

“You said there was more.”

Bradley nodded.

“There is.”

He opened a final folder.

“This is the document we found last night.”

Alyssa looked at it.

“What is it?”

“An internal corporate memo.”

“From whom?”

“From Aaron.”

Her stomach tightened.

“When?”

“Four months before your wedding.”

Alyssa froze.

“Four months before we got married?”

“Yes.”

Bradley turned the screen toward her.

The memo was short.

But one sentence stood out.

If Alyssa Vance marries me, Vance Capital’s influence over the company will become permanent.

Alyssa stared.

The room became completely silent.

Michael whispered,

“No.”

Alyssa kept reading.

The next paragraph contained an even more disturbing sentence.

Once the marriage is finalized, her family will have no choice but to continue supporting the company to protect her reputation.

Alyssa’s fingers went cold.

She looked at her father.

“You knew about this?”

Edward shook his head.

“No.”

“Then why was it in his corporate files?”

Bradley answered.

“Because the document was recovered from an archived server.”

Michael stood.

“He planned this?”

Alyssa didn’t answer.

She continued reading.

The final sentence made her heart stop.

Alyssa’s greatest weakness is that she believes love requires sacrifice.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Alyssa slowly closed her eyes.

Four years of memories rushed through her mind.

Every time Aaron had told her she was being unreasonable.

Every time he had asked her to wait.

Every time he had asked her to sign something without reading it.

Every time he had said,

“Trust me.”

She had trusted him.

Because she loved him.

And he had apparently understood exactly how to use that love.

Alyssa opened her eyes.

“Bradley.”

“Yes?”

“Who else has seen this?”

“Only you, Michael, your father, and me.”

“Good.”

She stood.

“Then nobody else sees it.”

Michael looked surprised.

“You’re not going to use it?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

Alyssa looked at the document.

“Because if Aaron deliberately married me for access to my family’s influence, I want to know exactly how far his plan went.”

Bradley nodded.

“I thought you might say that.”

He pulled out another envelope.

“And that’s why we found this.”

Alyssa stared at it.

“What is inside?”

Bradley placed the envelope on the table.

“A private investigation report.”

“About Aaron?”

“Yes.”

“Who hired the investigator?”

Bradley looked toward Edward.

Edward’s expression was grim.

“I did.”

Alyssa slowly opened the envelope.

Inside were photographs.

Financial records.

Emails.

Corporate registration documents.

And a timeline.

Alyssa picked up the first photograph.

It showed Aaron standing outside a restaurant with an unfamiliar man.

The date was four months before their wedding.

She picked up another.

Aaron entering an investment firm’s private office.

Another.

Aaron meeting with a lawyer.

Another.

Aaron meeting with Jasmine.

Alyssa’s eyes narrowed.

“This one is recent.”

“Yes.”

“How recent?”

“Three weeks before the airplane incident.”

Alyssa looked at the photograph.

Jasmine was sitting across from Aaron in a private restaurant.

There was a document between them.

“What is that?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Alyssa looked at Bradley.

“You’re telling me you don’t know?”

“We haven’t been able to obtain the original.”

“Then find it.”

“We’re trying.”

Alyssa placed the photograph down.

“Who was the man with Aaron?”

Bradley looked uncomfortable.

“That’s the part you won’t like.”

“Tell me.”

“He’s Victor Hale.”

Michael’s expression changed immediately.

“Victor Hale?”

Alyssa looked at him.

“Who?”

Michael stared at her.

“The founder of the company Aaron supposedly defeated in his first major acquisition.”

Alyssa’s eyes widened.

“What company?”

“Halcyon Technologies.”

Alyssa frowned.

“I thought Aaron bought them.”

“He did.”

Michael leaned forward.

“Or at least that’s what everyone believed.”

Across the city, Aaron was having a very different morning.

He hadn’t slept.

His shirt was wrinkled.

His tie was missing.

His hair was disheveled.

The billionaire who once appeared on magazine covers now looked like a man who had spent the night fighting a losing war.

His CFO entered the office carrying a folder.

“Sir.”

Aaron looked up.

“What?”

“We need to talk about the payroll.”

Aaron closed his eyes.

“How much?”

“We can cover this week’s payroll.”

“And next week?”

Silence.

Aaron slowly looked up.

“How long?”

“Eight days.”

He stared at the CFO.

“Eight days until what?”

“Until we run out of operating cash.”

Aaron leaned back.

“Sell something.”

“We’re trying.”

“Then try harder.”

“There is a problem.”

“What?”

“Our assets aren’t worth what they were yesterday.”

Aaron’s face tightened.

“Why?”

“Because the patents were revoked.”

He stood.

“Those patents are temporary licenses.”

“Correct.”

“So we’ll buy replacements.”

The CFO shook his head.

“There are no replacements.”

Aaron froze.

“What?”

“The Vance Research Institute controls the underlying technology.”

Aaron slowly sat down.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice came through.

“Mr. Prescott.”

“Who is this?”

“Someone who knows what you’re about to lose.”

Aaron frowned.

“Identify yourself.”

“You remember Victor Hale?”

Aaron’s expression changed.

“Where did you get this number?”

“That’s not important.”

“What do you want?”

“To offer you a way out.”

Aaron’s eyes narrowed.

“What kind of way out?”

“You need money.”

“Yes.”

“More than the banks will lend you.”

“How much?”

“Enough to survive.”

Aaron’s heart began beating faster.

“What do you want in return?”

The man laughed softly.

“Your company.”

Aaron stood.

“No.”

“Then you’ll lose it anyway.”

The call ended.

Aaron stared at the phone.

Victor Hale.

The name had not crossed his mind in years.

He immediately ordered his assistant to trace the number.

But before she could respond, another message arrived.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO ALYSSA.

Aaron’s blood ran cold.

At Vance headquarters, Alyssa was reviewing the investigation report when Bradley entered again.

“Miss Vance.”

She looked up.

“What?”

“We found the document Jasmine and Aaron were discussing.”

Alyssa’s eyes narrowed.

“Bring it here.”

Bradley placed a sealed evidence bag on the desk.

Inside was a contract.

Alyssa removed the copy.

She read the heading.

Her face changed.

“What is this?”

Michael stepped closer.

“It looks like an acquisition agreement.”

Alyssa continued reading.

Then she stopped.

“No.”

“What?”

“This isn’t an acquisition.”

She turned the page.

“It’s a transfer.”

Michael read it.

His eyes widened.

“Aaron transferred Vanguard’s intellectual property?”

“Not to Victor.”

Alyssa looked at the signature.

“To another company.”

Bradley nodded.

“We traced that company.”

“And?”

“It was created six months ago.”

“By whom?”

Bradley looked at her.

“Jasmine Miller.”

The room went silent.

Alyssa slowly put down the document.

“So Jasmine wasn’t just trying to take my seat.”

“No.”

“She was moving assets.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Bradley opened another file.

“To an offshore holding company.”

Alyssa’s expression hardened.

“Who owns it?”

Bradley didn’t answer.

“Bradley.”

“We don’t know.”

“Find out.”

“We’re already tracing the beneficial ownership.”

Michael looked at the contract again.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“The transfer date.”

Alyssa looked down.

It was dated two days before the private-jet trip.

Her eyes narrowed.

“That means…”

“Yes,” Michael said.

“This was planned before the airplane incident.”

Alyssa stood very slowly.

“So the seat wasn’t the reason.”

“No.”

She stared at the papers.

“Then what was the airplane trip?”

Bradley answered.

“A distraction.”

The word landed like a hammer.

Alyssa’s mind raced.

Aaron had humiliated her.

Jasmine had deliberately provoked her.

Everyone on the plane had watched.

And while Alyssa was being pushed out of her own seat, something else may have been happening behind the scenes.

Something involving the company’s most valuable assets.

She suddenly remembered Jasmine’s words.

I stayed up until three in the morning working on Aaron’s projections.

Alyssa’s eyes hardened.

“She wanted me to leave.”

Michael looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because if I stayed close to Aaron, I might notice what they were doing.”

Bradley nodded slowly.

“That’s possible.”

Alyssa looked at the contract again.

Then another thought occurred to her.

“Where was the company’s head of intellectual property during the flight?”

Bradley checked his notes.

“Supposedly sick.”

Alyssa’s expression changed.

“Find him.”

“Immediately?”

“Immediately.”

Two hours later, the man arrived at Vance headquarters.

His name was Leonard Grant.

He had been Vanguard Dynamics’ intellectual property director for nearly five years.

He looked terrified.

Alyssa sat across from him.

“Mr. Grant.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“You know why you’re here.”

He swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

Alyssa placed the transfer agreement on the table.

His face went white.

“I didn’t sign that.”

“I didn’t say you did.”

He stared at her.

Alyssa leaned forward.

“Who ordered the transfer?”

Leonard looked down.

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“They’ll destroy me.”

“Who?”

Silence.

Alyssa pushed another document toward him.

“Your family owns a home in Westlake.”

He looked up sharply.

“You have two children.”

His face collapsed.

“Please.”

“I am not threatening you.”

“Then what are you doing?”

“Giving you one chance to tell me the truth before the people who actually threatened you realize you’re talking to me.”

Leonard’s eyes filled with tears.

He whispered,

“It was Aaron.”

Alyssa’s jaw tightened.

“Who else?”

“Jasmine.”

“Who else?”

Leonard hesitated.

Then he whispered a name.

“Victor Hale.”

Michael’s eyes widened.

Alyssa remained completely still.

“Why?”

Leonard shook his head.

“They wanted the patents.”

“Why?”

“Because Vanguard’s next-generation battery technology is worth more than the company itself.”

Alyssa stared at him.

“And Aaron knew?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Almost a year.”

Alyssa’s expression became cold.

“Why did he need Jasmine?”

“To move the paperwork without the board knowing.”

“And Victor?”

Leonard looked terrified.

“Victor had buyers.”

Alyssa leaned back.

“Buyers for what?”

Leonard swallowed.

“The technology.”

For the first time since leaving the airplane, Alyssa felt something stronger than anger.

She felt betrayal on an entirely different level.

Aaron hadn’t simply humiliated her.

He hadn’t simply fallen in love with his secretary.

He had apparently been preparing to strip Vanguard of its most valuable assets while using her family’s money to keep the company alive.

The $1.5 billion she had given him had not merely built his empire.

It had helped finance the very machinery he might now use against her family.

Alyssa stood.

“Bradley.”

“Yes?”

“Freeze every remaining Vance-linked account connected to Vanguard.”

“Already done.”

“Freeze every patent license.”

“Done.”

“Contact the regulators.”

Bradley nodded.

“Already preparing the filings.”

“And Victor Hale?”

“We’re investigating him.”

Alyssa looked toward Michael.

“Find him.”

Michael nodded.

“Where do you think he’ll be?”

Alyssa looked at the photograph of Aaron and Victor.

“Wherever desperate men go when they believe they’ve found a way to escape the consequences of their mistakes.”

That evening, Aaron received another call.

Victor Hale.

Aaron answered immediately.

“You said you could save my company.”

“I can.”

“What do you want?”

“Control.”

“How much?”

“All of it.”

Aaron’s jaw tightened.

“No.”

Victor laughed.

“Then enjoy bankruptcy.”

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

Victor’s voice became colder.

“You’ve lost the Vance money.”

Aaron remained silent.

“You’ve lost the patents.”

Silence.

“You’ve lost the investors.”

Aaron’s hand tightened around the phone.

“And soon, you’ll lose your board.”

Aaron stared at the city through the window.

“What if I refuse?”

“Then you lose everything.”

Victor paused.

“And Alyssa wins.”

That name changed something in Aaron.

He slammed his fist against the desk.

“Don’t talk about my wife.”

Victor laughed.

“Your wife?”

“You don’t know anything about us.”

“I know more than you think.”

Aaron’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Alyssa isn’t the woman you thought she was.”

Aaron froze.

“What are you talking about?”

Victor’s voice became almost amused.

“Ask her about the original Vanguard agreement.”

The call ended.

Aaron stared at the phone.

Original agreement?

What did Victor know?

And why was Alyssa suddenly becoming more dangerous than he had ever imagined?

At 11:47 p.m., Alyssa received one final piece of information.

Bradley entered her office without knocking.

His face was grim.

“We found the owner of the offshore company.”

Alyssa looked up.

“Who?”

Bradley placed a file on her desk.

Alyssa opened it.

Her eyes stopped on the name.

For several seconds, she couldn’t speak.

Michael walked over.

“What is it?”

Alyssa slowly turned the document toward him.

The beneficial owner wasn’t Victor Hale.

It wasn’t Jasmine.

And it wasn’t Aaron.

It was someone much closer.

Someone Alyssa had trusted for years.

Someone whose name had never once appeared in the public story of Vanguard Dynamics.

Someone who had been standing behind Aaron from the very beginning.

Alyssa whispered,

“This can’t be real.”

Michael read the name.

His expression changed instantly.

“Are you sure?”

Bradley nodded.

“We verified it three times.”

Alyssa closed the folder.

Her hands were trembling.

Then her private phone rang.

Unknown number.

She stared at it.

Michael said quietly,

“Don’t answer.”

The phone continued ringing.

Alyssa picked it up.

“Hello?”

A familiar voice answered.

A voice she had not heard in years.

“Alyssa.”

Her blood ran cold.

She knew that voice.

She slowly stood.

“Who is this?”

The voice laughed softly.

“You already know.”

Alyssa’s face went pale.

The man continued.

“You’ve spent the last four years thinking Aaron was the mastermind.”

A pause.

“He wasn’t.”

Alyssa gripped the phone.

“Then who was?”

The voice became quiet.

“Me.”

The call ended.

Alyssa stood frozen.

Michael stared at her.

“What happened?”

She slowly lowered the phone.

Then she looked at the document on the desk.

The name on it suddenly made sense.

The hidden company.

The missing patents.

The secret meetings.

Jasmine.

Victor.

Aaron.

Everything connected.

And somewhere in the middle of it all was a person Alyssa had trusted long before she ever met Aaron.

Someone who had been waiting patiently for the right moment to take everything.

Alyssa looked toward the dark city outside the window.

Her expression changed.

The woman who had walked off that airplane believing she was simply ending a broken marriage was gone.

What she had uncovered was far bigger than divorce.

It was a conspiracy.

And if the evidence was real, the man who had been controlling Aaron’s empire from the shadows had just made the biggest mistake of his life.

Because he had finally revealed himself.

And Alyssa Vance was no longer running away.

She was coming for him.
