PART 5: THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN
Alyssa did not sleep that night.
She sat alone in the private library of the Vance estate, the investigation folder open on the table in front of her.
The same name stared back at her.
A name she had trusted.
A name that had been present during some of the most important moments of her life.
A name that had been quietly connected to Aaron’s empire from the beginning.
She read the documents again.
Then again.
And every time, the same conclusion became harder to deny.
Someone had been manipulating Vanguard Dynamics long before Alyssa ever stepped onto that private jet.
The humiliation on the airplane had not started the war.
It had simply revealed that the war had already begun.
At 2:18 a.m., Michael walked into the library carrying two cups of coffee.
“You’re still awake.”
Alyssa didn’t look up.
“I keep hoping the documents will change.”
“They won’t.”
“I know.”
Michael placed the coffee beside her.
“Then stop looking at the papers.”
Alyssa finally looked at him.
“I need to understand why.”
Michael sat across from her.
“Why what?”
“Why would someone spend years building Aaron’s company just to destroy it?”
Michael thought for a moment.
“Maybe they didn’t build it to destroy it.”
Alyssa’s eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean?”
“Maybe they built it to own it.”
The words settled heavily between them.
Alyssa looked back at the documents.
The offshore company.
The transferred patents.
The secret agreements.
The hidden investor relationships.
Suddenly, she understood something.
The goal had never been to make Aaron successful.
The goal had been to make Aaron dependent.
Dependent on investors.
Dependent on Vance money.
Dependent on technology.
Dependent on people he believed were working for him.
And eventually, dependent on the person behind the curtain.
Alyssa whispered,
“They wanted him to believe he was the king.”
Michael nodded.
“While someone else owned the kingdom.”
At 6:30 a.m., Aaron received a message.
WE NEED TO MEET.
There was no name.
Only an address.
Aaron stared at it for almost a minute.
He knew exactly who had sent it.
Victor Hale.
He should have ignored it.
Instead, desperation won.
He grabbed his coat and left.
The meeting location was an abandoned office building on the edge of the financial district.
Aaron stepped inside.
The lobby was dark.
His footsteps echoed against the marble floor.
“Victor?”
No answer.
He walked farther.
Then a light switched on.
Victor Hale sat behind an old wooden desk.
He looked exactly as Aaron remembered.
Older.
Calmer.
And far more dangerous.
Aaron stopped.
“You.”
Victor smiled.
“Good morning, Aaron.”
“You said you could save my company.”
“I can.”
“Then do it.”
Victor leaned back.
“You’re still giving orders.”
Aaron’s jaw tightened.
“I don’t have time for games.”
Victor laughed.
“You never did.”
He slid a folder across the desk.
Aaron opened it.
His face changed.
“These are Vanguard’s private accounts.”
“Yes.”
“How did you get them?”
“I’ve had access for months.”
Aaron stared at him.
“You’ve been spying on me?”
Victor shrugged.
“I’ve been preparing.”
Aaron flipped through the pages.
There were transactions he had never seen.
Transfers between shell companies.
Payments to consultants.
Investment structures.
Licensing agreements.
Then he saw something that made his blood run cold.
His own signature.
On documents he didn’t remember signing.
“What is this?”
Victor smiled.
“You signed it two years ago.”
“I didn’t authorize this.”
“You did.”
“No.”
Victor leaned forward.
“You signed hundreds of documents every year.”
Aaron’s face tightened.
“Where did the money go?”
Victor didn’t answer.
Aaron looked again.
Then he realized.
Some of the transfers had gone to the same offshore company connected to Jasmine.
His stomach turned.
“Jasmine.”
Victor nodded.
“She was useful.”
“You recruited her?”
“No.”
Victor smiled.
“She recruited herself.”
Aaron stared at him.
“She approached me after she discovered how unhappy you were with your marriage.”
Aaron’s expression darkened.
“She told you about Alyssa?”
“She told me everything.”
Aaron stepped closer.
“What did she want?”
Victor’s smile disappeared.
“Your wife.”
Aaron froze.
“What?”
“She wanted Alyssa’s position.”
“She wanted my wife?”
“She wanted what your wife had.”
Aaron slowly understood.
The luxury.
The influence.
The social position.
The family name.
The power.
Everything Jasmine had seen from the outside.
Victor continued.
“She thought if Alyssa disappeared, you would eventually marry her.”
Aaron laughed bitterly.
“She actually believed that?”
“Yes.”
“And you encouraged her?”
“I encouraged everyone.”
Aaron stared.
“What does that mean?”
Victor stood.
“It means your marriage was never as private as you thought.”
At Vance headquarters, Bradley entered Alyssa’s office carrying a thick binder.
“We traced another account.”
Alyssa looked up.
“Where?”
“Singapore.”
“Whose?”
“An intermediary company connected to the offshore holding structure.”
“Amount?”
“Four hundred and eighty million dollars.”
Alyssa’s expression hardened.
“Where did it come from?”
“Vanguard.”
Michael walked into the room.
“What are they hiding?”
Bradley opened the binder.
“That’s the problem.”
He pointed to several transfers.
“The money moved through six different companies.”
“Why?”
“To make the original source difficult to trace.”
Alyssa studied the dates.
Then she stopped.
“These transfers happened before the first major Vanguard acquisition.”
“Yes.”
“So the company was already moving money offshore before Aaron became publicly successful.”
“Correct.”
Alyssa leaned back.
“Then this wasn’t a recent conspiracy.”
“No.”
“How long?”
Bradley turned another page.
“Six years.”
Michael swore quietly.
Alyssa closed her eyes.
Six years.
That meant the deception had started before their marriage.
Maybe before their engagement.
Maybe before she had even realized she was in love.
She opened her eyes.
“Find everything.”
“We are.”
“No.”
Bradley looked at her.
“Everything means everything.”
Alyssa’s voice became cold.
“I want every account, every shell company, every investor, every lawyer, every consultant, every employee who ever handled these transfers.”
Bradley nodded.
“And if someone refuses?”
“Then subpoena them.”
Meanwhile, Aaron returned to his penthouse with the folder Victor had given him.
He locked the door.
Closed the curtains.
And began reading.
For the next three hours, he discovered things about his own company that he had never known.
Money had been diverted.
Contracts had been altered.
Patents had been pledged as collateral.
Investors had been promised access to technology Aaron thought Vanguard owned exclusively.
And worst of all…
There was a document dated four years earlier.
The document was titled:
CONTINGENCY CONTROL AGREEMENT.
Aaron read the first paragraph.
Then he stopped.
His hands began shaking.
The agreement gave another party the right to assume control of Vanguard Dynamics if the company suffered a major financial breach.
He read the name.
His heart stopped.
It was Victor Hale.
Aaron whispered,
“No…”
Then he saw the date.
The agreement had been signed before Vanguard’s largest expansion.
And beneath his signature was another.
Alyssa’s.
Aaron stared at it.
“No.”
He read it again.
Her signature was unmistakable.
But something was wrong.
Alyssa had never told him about this.
He grabbed his phone and called her.
The call went directly to voicemail.
He called again.
Blocked.
He threw the phone onto the couch.
Then a thought struck him.
If Alyssa had signed this…
Why was she attacking him now?
Unless…
She hadn’t known.
Someone had forged the document.
Aaron immediately called his lawyer.
“Get to my apartment.”
“Mr. Prescott, it’s 3 a.m.”
“I don’t care.”
Twenty minutes later, the lawyer arrived.
Aaron placed the document in front of him.
“Check this signature.”
The lawyer studied it.
His expression slowly changed.
“What?”
“This isn’t Mrs. Vance’s signature.”
Aaron stared.
“What?”
“I’ve seen her signature on hundreds of documents.”
The lawyer pointed to the page.
“This is a very good imitation.”
Aaron’s breathing became heavy.
“Then who forged it?”
The lawyer didn’t answer.
Aaron looked toward the window.
Suddenly, every assumption he had made began collapsing.
Alyssa hadn’t betrayed him.
Someone had been using both of them.
The next morning, Alyssa received a message from an unknown number.
YOU ARE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.
She stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
THE PERSON YOU TRUST IS NOT YOUR ENEMY.
Alyssa immediately showed Michael.
“Who sent this?”
“We can trace it.”
“Do it.”
A few minutes later, Michael looked up.
“It’s bouncing through multiple servers.”
“Can you identify the origin?”
“Not yet.”
Alyssa frowned.
Then another message arrived.
MEET ME ALONE.
A location followed.
Michael immediately shook his head.
“No.”
Alyssa looked at him.
“I need answers.”
“It could be a trap.”
“I know.”
“Then you’re not going.”
Alyssa smiled faintly.
“Michael.”
“What?”
“Have you forgotten who our family is?”
He sighed.
“No.”
“Good.”
She stood.
“Then you should know I don’t walk into traps without preparing one of my own.”
Two hours later, Alyssa arrived at an old private art gallery.
She entered alone.
The doors closed behind her.
The gallery was empty.
Paintings covered the walls.
A grandfather clock ticked quietly.
“Hello?”
No response.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“You came.”
Alyssa froze.
The lights slowly turned on.
A man stepped out from behind a painting.
Alyssa knew him.
Her eyes widened.
“Daniel?”
Daniel Cross, Vanguard Dynamics’ CFO, stood several feet away.
He looked exhausted.
His tie was loose.
His face was pale.
“You shouldn’t have come alone,” Alyssa said.
“I didn’t have a choice.”
“You sent the messages?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked around nervously.
“Because someone is watching me.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then tell me what you know.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Your husband wasn’t the person controlling the offshore accounts.”
“I know.”
“You don’t know everything.”
Alyssa waited.
Daniel took a USB drive from his pocket.
“This contains the original transaction records.”
Alyssa didn’t take it.
“Why give them to me?”
“Because I made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“I helped move the money.”
Alyssa’s eyes hardened.
“You knew?”
“I knew something was wrong.”
“How much?”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Enough to know that if the truth comes out, I’ll probably go to prison.”
Alyssa stared at him.
“Then why are you helping me?”
Daniel looked directly at her.
“Because my wife was diagnosed with cancer two years ago.”
Alyssa remained silent.
“Someone offered to pay her medical bills if I cooperated.”
“Who?”
“I never saw his face.”
“Then how did you communicate?”
“Through an encrypted account.”
“Name?”
Daniel whispered,
“Black Raven.”
Alyssa’s expression changed.
“Black Raven?”
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who controls it?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel’s voice began shaking.
“But I know one thing.”
“What?”
“They’ve been inside Vanguard from the beginning.”
Alyssa took the USB drive.
“What’s on it?”
“Everything.”
“Everything?”
“Every transfer.”
“Every payment?”
“Yes.”
“Every name?”
Daniel nodded.
“Every name.”
Alyssa looked at him.
“Why didn’t you give this to the authorities?”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Because the authorities don’t know who they can trust.”
Alyssa’s eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Because Black Raven has people everywhere.”
Suddenly, the lights went out.
Daniel froze.
Alyssa reached for her phone.
A loud crash came from the back room.
“Someone’s here.”
Daniel grabbed her arm.
“Run.”
They rushed toward the exit.
Another crash.
Then a window shattered.
A shadow moved across the gallery.
Daniel shoved Alyssa behind a stone pillar.
“Stay down.”
Alyssa heard footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Coming closer.
Daniel whispered,
“They found us.”
Alyssa’s heart pounded.
“Who?”
Daniel looked toward the darkness.
“I don’t know.”
A figure appeared.
Alyssa prepared herself.
But instead of attacking, the person stopped.
Then a voice spoke.
“Alyssa.”
She recognized it.
Her eyes widened.
It was Aaron.
He stepped into the light.
His face was bruised.
His shirt was torn.
And he was holding a file in his hand.
Daniel stared at him.
“What happened to you?”
Aaron ignored him.
He looked directly at Alyssa.
“I finally know the truth.”
Alyssa crossed her arms.
“Do you?”
Aaron nodded.
“Someone forged your signature.”
Alyssa’s expression changed.
“What?”
“They used your name to control Vanguard.”
“Who?”
Aaron looked at Daniel.
Then at the USB drive in Alyssa’s hand.
“Black Raven.”
Daniel’s face turned white.
“You know about Black Raven?”
Aaron nodded.
“I met the man behind it.”
Alyssa’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Aaron hesitated.
Then he said,
“The person behind Black Raven is someone you already know.”
Alyssa’s heart stopped.
“Who?”
Aaron looked at her.
And before he could answer, the gallery doors slammed shut.
A loud metallic lock echoed through the room.
Daniel turned.
“We’re trapped.”
The lights flickered back on.
Every screen in the gallery suddenly activated.
A message appeared.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PAST ALONE.
Alyssa stared at the screen.
Then another line appeared.
NOW ALL THREE OF YOU WILL PAY.
Aaron looked at Alyssa.
“Alyssa…”
She didn’t answer.
Her eyes remained fixed on the screen.
Then the final message appeared.
MIDNIGHT. VANCE TOWER. COME ALONE.
The screen went black.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Alyssa slowly looked at Aaron.
“You said you met the person behind Black Raven.”
Aaron nodded.
“Where?”
“Yesterday.”
“Who was it?”
Aaron’s voice dropped.
“Victor Hale.”
Alyssa shook her head.
“No.”
Aaron frowned.
“What?”
“Victor isn’t the mastermind.”
“Then who is?”
Alyssa looked at the USB drive in her hand.
She suddenly understood why the mysterious caller had told her she was looking in the wrong place.
Why Daniel had been frightened.
Why Aaron had been manipulated.
Why Jasmine had been recruited.
Why Victor had suddenly reappeared.
And why someone had been watching her family for years.
Alyssa whispered,
“Victor is only a middleman.”
Aaron stared at her.
“Then who is above him?”
Alyssa looked toward the dark screen.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel suddenly spoke.
“I do.”
Both Alyssa and Aaron turned toward him.
Daniel’s face was completely pale.
“I saw the name once.”
Alyssa stepped closer.
“What name?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Your father’s.”
Alyssa froze.
“My father?”
Daniel nodded.
“But I don’t think your father is Black Raven.”
“Then why is his name in the records?”
Daniel looked at her with fear.
“Because Black Raven’s first account was created using your father’s identity.”
Alyssa’s world seemed to tilt.
“My father has nothing to do with this.”
“I believe you.”
“Then who used his identity?”
Daniel looked toward the locked doors.
“I don’t know.”
Alyssa stared at him.
Then Aaron suddenly spoke.
“There is one person who would have access to your father’s signature.”
Alyssa turned.
“Who?”
Aaron’s face was filled with dread.
“Someone who worked inside the Vance family office.”
Alyssa’s blood ran cold.
Because she knew exactly who he meant.
And if Aaron was right, the person who had spent years manipulating both families had been sitting inside her father’s organization the entire time.
Someone who knew every secret.
Every account.
Every signature.
Every weakness.
Someone who had watched Alyssa grow up.
Someone she had trusted completely.
Alyssa slowly reached for her phone.
She called her father’s chief financial officer.
The man answered immediately.
“Miss Vance?”
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
“Good.”
Alyssa paused.
“Don’t open your door.”
There was silence.
“Why?”
“Because I think someone has been using your credentials.”
The man didn’t respond.
Then Alyssa heard something in the background.
A door opening.
A man’s voice.
And then a terrified scream.
The call went dead.
Alyssa stared at the phone.
Aaron whispered,
“What happened?”
She looked up.
Her expression was no longer frightened.
It was furious.
“Someone just reached my father’s office.”
Michael’s voice suddenly came through her earpiece.
“Alyssa!”
She answered.
“Michael?”
“You need to get out of there.”
“Why?”
“I found the identity behind the offshore company.”
Alyssa’s heart pounded.
“Who?”
Michael’s voice dropped.
“It’s not Victor.”
“Who is it?”
“Alyssa…”
“What?”
“The company is registered to a person who has worked for your family for twenty-three years.”
Alyssa closed her eyes.
“Tell me.”
Michael whispered the name.
Alyssa’s eyes opened.
The name was impossible.
It belonged to the person she had trusted more than almost anyone.
The person who had helped raise her.
The person who had always called her little miss.
The person who had been standing beside her family through every crisis.
The person who knew exactly how much money she had.
Exactly which patents her family owned.
Exactly how her father’s companies were structured.
And now…
Exactly how to destroy them.
Alyssa whispered,
“No…”
Aaron looked at her.
“Who?”
She slowly lowered the phone.
“The person behind the entire operation…”
Her voice shook.
“…is someone from inside my own family.”
Outside the gallery, a black vehicle suddenly screeched to a stop.
The doors opened.
Several men stepped out.
And one of them was carrying a photograph of Alyssa as a child.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message:
SHE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO INHERIT ANYTHING.
Alyssa saw it through the glass.
Her blood ran cold.
Because suddenly, this was no longer about Aaron.
It was no longer about Jasmine.
It was no longer about Vanguard Dynamics.
Someone had been waiting for Alyssa’s inheritance long before she ever married Aaron.
And now that she had taken back control…
They were finally ready to come for her.
