PART 20
Something laughed in the darkness.
Daniel couldn’t move.
His father’s words repeated inside his head.
The day you killed God.
Daniel stared into the darkness.
“What did you mean?”
No answer.
“Dad?”
Silence.
Then a light appeared.
A single white light.
It illuminated the floor.
There was blood on it.
Fresh blood.
Daniel looked down.
His hands were covered in it.
He stumbled backward.
“No.”
His father appeared at the edge of the light.
“You remember now.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t.”
“You will.”
“What did I kill?”
His father looked toward the black door.
“Not what.”
He paused.
“Who.”
Daniel’s heart began pounding.
“God?”
His father nodded.
Daniel laughed nervously.
“There is no God.”
His father smiled.
“That is what you said before you killed him.”
Daniel stared.
“Where?”
“Here.”
“In the cemetery?”
“No.”
“Then where?”
His father pointed upward.
Daniel looked.
The ceiling disappeared.
Above him was a sky.
Not Earth’s sky.
Stars filled the darkness.
Millions of them.
But they weren’t stars.
They were eyes.
Watching.
Daniel whispered:
“What is that?”
His father answered:
“The first consciousness.”
Daniel stared.
“The thing inside the House?”
“No.”
“The thing inside me?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
His father whispered:
“The thing that created you.”
Daniel felt a cold wave move through him.
“Created me?”
“Yes.”
“Then who created it?”
His father smiled.
“That is the question you were never supposed to ask.”
Daniel looked at the sky.
Every eye opened.
All at once.
The cemetery disappeared.
Daniel was standing somewhere else.
A vast white room.
No walls.
No floor.
No ceiling.
Just white.
And in the center—
a table.
On the table was a small metal box.
Daniel approached it.
His father’s voice echoed behind him.
“Open it.”
Daniel stopped.
“What is inside?”
“The first memory.”
Daniel reached for the box.
His hand trembled.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
One photograph.
Daniel picked it up.
His blood froze.
It showed a laboratory.
Three people stood inside.
His mother.
His father.
And Daniel.
But Daniel was holding a newborn.
The same newborn from the hospital.
Elias.
Daniel stared.
“When was this taken?”
His father answered:
“Before you were born.”
Daniel looked at him.
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
“Then explain.”
“You weren’t born.”
Daniel clenched the photograph.
“Again with this.”
His father shook his head.
“You were created.”
Daniel stared.
“By whom?”
His father pointed toward the photograph.
“Look closer.”
Daniel did.
There was writing on the back.
He turned it over.
Three words.
PROJECT GENESIS — SUBJECT ZERO.
Daniel’s breathing stopped.
“Subject Zero?”
His father nodded.
“Before Subject 000.”
Daniel looked confused.
“What’s the difference?”
“Subject 000 was a copy.”
“And Zero?”
His father smiled.
“You.”
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“But if I was Subject Zero…”
“You were the first.”
“And the baby?”
His father looked away.
“The second.”
Daniel’s heart sank.
“Elias.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did I kill him?”
“You didn’t.”
Daniel froze.
“But you said—”
“I said you killed God.”
Daniel stared.
“Elias wasn’t God.”
“No.”
“Then who was?”
His father pointed toward the white room.
The table began moving.
A second box appeared.
Daniel opened it.
Inside was another photograph.
This time—
Silas.
Standing beside Daniel.
Both were smiling.
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Where is this?”
His father answered:
“The last day.”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“What last day?”
“The last day before the world ended.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“What year?”
His father said:
“1961.”
Daniel looked up.
“But the world didn’t end.”
His father smiled.
“Your world did.”
Daniel stared.
“What happened?”
“You killed God.”
Daniel’s voice became angry.
“Stop saying that.”
His father remained calm.
“You wanted to save your mother.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What happened to her?”
“She was dying.”
“I remember.”
“No.”
His father stepped closer.
“You remember the story.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What is the truth?”
“Your mother wasn’t dying.”
Daniel froze.
“She was transforming.”
“Into the House?”
“No.”
His father whispered:
“Into God.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“What?”
“She discovered the first consciousness.”
“And it entered her?”
“No.”
“She became it.”
Daniel stared.
“Then why did I kill God?”
His father answered:
“You didn’t kill your mother.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Then who?”
“You killed yourself.”
Daniel felt dizzy.
“I don’t understand.”
His father smiled.
“You never do.”
The white room began shaking.
The table cracked.
The photograph in Daniel’s hand began burning.
He dropped it.
The photograph hit the floor.
And suddenly—
he remembered.
A laboratory.
His mother screaming.
His father holding a machine.
Silas standing in the corner.
Young.
Terrified.
And Daniel—
standing in front of a glowing sphere.
A voice inside the sphere was speaking.
Daniel.
Daniel in the memory answered:
“Who are you?”
The sphere replied:
I AM YOU.
Daniel remembered stepping closer.
“What do you want?”
TO LIVE.
Daniel remembered asking:
“Why can’t you?”
The sphere answered:
BECAUSE YOU CREATED ME.
Daniel froze.
The memory shifted.
His father was shouting.
“DON’T TOUCH IT!”
Daniel ignored him.
His mother screamed:
“DANIEL!”
Daniel touched the sphere.
The world exploded.
Daniel fell.
Silas ran toward him.
“Dad!”
Daniel looked up.
His body was burning.
But he wasn’t screaming.
He was smiling.
The sphere spoke again.
THANK YOU.
Daniel remembered asking:
“What did I do?”
The sphere answered:
YOU GAVE ME A BODY.
Daniel looked at his hands.
They were no longer his.
Something had entered him.
Something ancient.
Something enormous.
The memory ended.
Daniel fell to his knees.
“No…”
His father stood beside him.
“You remember.”
Daniel looked up.
“That thing entered me.”
“Yes.”
“What was it?”
His father whispered:
“God.”
Daniel stared.
“So I killed God by…”
“Taking it inside yourself.”
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“But that’s not killing it.”
His father smiled.
“No.”
Daniel understood.
“It was killing myself.”
“Yes.”
“And the House…”
“Was built to contain you.”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“You built the House because I became God.”
“Yes.”
“And every reset…”
“Was an attempt to remove God from you.”
Daniel whispered:
“But it never worked.”
“No.”
“Why?”
His father looked toward Daniel’s chest.
“Because God wasn’t inside your body.”
Daniel froze.
“Then where?”
His father pointed at Daniel’s head.
“Inside your memory.”
Daniel couldn’t breathe.
Every memory.
Every life.
Every reset.
Every death.
All of it had been the prison.
The House hadn’t been trapping Daniel.
It had been trapping God.
Daniel stood.
“Then why did it need me?”
His father answered:
“Because God needed a human mind to survive.”
Daniel looked toward the black door.
“And Silas?”
His father’s expression changed.
“Silas was the only person God couldn’t control.”
Daniel froze.
“Why?”
“Because Silas wasn’t created by you.”
Daniel stared.
“He was created by love.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Silas.
The one memory that always survived.
The one person who could reach him.
The one person the House couldn’t erase.
His father continued:
“That is why God wants him dead.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
“God is still alive.”
“Yes.”
“Inside me.”
“Yes.”
“And Silas is trapped.”
“Yes.”
Daniel turned toward the black door.
“Then I’m going back.”
His father grabbed his arm.
“No.”
Daniel pulled away.
“I have to save him.”
“You can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because God is awake.”
Daniel stared.
His father’s voice dropped.
“And it knows you’re trying to escape.”
The white room vanished.
Daniel was back in the cemetery.
The black door stood before him.
But something was wrong.
The name SILAS BLACKWOOD was gone.
Daniel stared.
“Where is his name?”
His father stood behind him.
“He’s been erased.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“No.”
He touched the door.
“Silas!”
Nothing.
“Silas!”
Silence.
Daniel slammed his fist against the door.
“OPEN!”
Nothing.
Then—
a tiny sound.
A heartbeat.
Daniel stopped.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
It was coming from behind the door.
Daniel pressed his ear against it.
“Silas?”
A whisper answered.
“Dad…”
Daniel smiled through his tears.
“I’m here.”
“Don’t open the door.”
“Why?”
Silas’s voice trembled.
“Because I’m not alone.”
Daniel froze.
“What is with you?”
Silence.
Then another voice spoke.
A deep voice.
An ancient voice.
One Daniel had heard before.
Inside the sphere.
Inside the House.
Inside himself.
HELLO, DANIEL.
Daniel stepped backward.
His father whispered:
“It’s awake.”
Daniel stared at the door.
“What do you want?”
The voice answered:
YOU.
Daniel’s chest burned.
Black lines appeared across his skin.
The mark behind his ear spread down his neck.
Daniel screamed.
His father backed away.
“No.”
Daniel fell to his knees.
The voice spoke again.
YOU CANNOT KILL ME.
Daniel gasped.
“Then what can I do?”
REMEMBER.
Daniel froze.
The voice continued.
REMEMBER EVERYTHING.
Images exploded into Daniel’s mind.
His mother.
His father.
Elias.
Silas.
Walter.
Arthur.
The House.
The machines.
The cemetery.
Three hundred and twelve deaths.
Three hundred and thirteen experiments.
Millions of memories.
Billions of lives.
Daniel screamed.
“STOP!”
The voice laughed.
YOU WANTED THE TRUTH.
Daniel covered his head.
“I can’t take it.”
YOU HAVE TAKEN IT BEFORE.
“I’m not the same person.”
YES.
“You can’t control me.”
I DON’T NEED TO.
Daniel looked up.
The voice whispered:
YOU ARE ME.
Daniel froze.
His father screamed:
“DON’T LISTEN!”
But Daniel already knew.
He could feel it.
The presence.
The ancient consciousness.
It wasn’t inside him.
It wasn’t controlling him.
It wasn’t possessing him.
It had been there from the beginning.
It was part of him.
The memories.
The thoughts.
The instincts.
The dreams.
The voice.
Daniel whispered:
“God isn’t inside me.”
His father stared.
Daniel slowly stood.
“God is me.”
Silence.
The voice stopped.
For the first time—
God was silent.
Daniel looked toward the black door.
“That’s why you couldn’t control me.”
The door began shaking.
Daniel continued:
“You weren’t controlling me.”
The black mark on his neck began fading.
“I was controlling you.”
His father stared in disbelief.
Daniel smiled.
“You made me believe you were stronger.”
The door cracked.
Daniel stepped forward.
“But you forgot something.”
The voice returned.
WHAT?
Daniel whispered:
“I created you.”
The cemetery went silent.
Then the black door exploded.
Silas fell forward.
Daniel caught him.
“Silas!”
The boy was unconscious.
Daniel held him tightly.
His father stared at the destroyed door.
“Daniel…”
“What?”
“Look.”
Daniel turned.
Behind the door was not darkness.
There was a city.
A real city.
People walking.
Cars moving.
Buildings.
Lights.
Normal life.
Daniel stared.
“How?”
His father whispered:
“This isn’t the past.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“Then what?”
“It’s the future.”
Daniel stared at the city.
Everything looked peaceful.
Too peaceful.
A giant screen stood above the buildings.
A message appeared.
YEAR 2079.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“How did we get here?”
His father didn’t answer.
Another message appeared.
HUMAN MEMORY NETWORK: 100%
Then:
DEATH: ELIMINATED
Daniel stared.
“No.”
Another message appeared.
FREE WILL: OPTIONAL
Daniel felt sick.
Then the final message appeared.
CREATOR: DANIEL BLACKWOOD
Daniel’s blood turned cold.
Silas opened his eyes.
“Dad?”
Daniel looked down.
Silas whispered:
“We lost.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Silas pointed toward the city.
“Look.”
Daniel looked.
People were standing in the streets.
Millions of them.
All facing the same direction.
All looking toward the sky.
Daniel followed their gaze.
Something was descending.
A massive structure.
Bigger than the House.
Bigger than a city.
Bigger than anything Daniel had ever seen.
It looked like a black moon.
Silas whispered:
“That’s where you went.”
Daniel stared.
“Where I went?”
“In the future.”
“What did I become?”
Silas looked at him.
“The last God.”
Daniel couldn’t speak.
The black moon opened.
A voice came from it.
Daniel’s voice.
Older.
Colder.
Absolute.
YOU HAVE ARRIVED.
Daniel held Silas tighter.
The voice continued:
NOW WE CAN BEGIN THE FINAL EXPERIMENT.
Daniel looked at his father.
“What experiment?”
His father was crying.
“The one you created the House to prevent.”
“What?”
His father pointed at the sky.
The black moon began opening.
Inside it—
billions of human faces appeared.
Every face Daniel had ever seen.
Every version.
Every memory.
Every person.
All connected.
All alive.
All looking at him.
His father whispered:
“You didn’t create God.”
Daniel stared.
“You created humanity’s replacement.”
Silas grabbed Daniel’s hand.
“Dad…”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Silas pointed behind them.
A door had appeared in the cemetery.
Not black.
White.
On it was one sentence.
THERE IS ONE MEMORY LEFT.
Daniel stared.
“What memory?”
Silas whispered:
“The one that started everything.”
Daniel reached for the door.
His father screamed:
“DON’T OPEN IT!”
Daniel stopped.
“Why?”
His father looked terrified.
“Because that memory isn’t about you.”
Daniel turned.
“Then who?”
His father whispered:
“It’s about me.”
Daniel stared.
His father began crying.
“I was the one who killed your mother.”
Silence.
Daniel’s hand remained on the door.
His father continued:
“And I did it…”
He looked at Silas.
“…to save you.”
Daniel slowly opened the door.
Inside—
he saw the night of 1961.
His mother.
His father.
Daniel.
Silas.
The glowing sphere.
And one more person standing in the corner.
Someone Daniel had never seen before.
A woman.
She looked exactly like Daniel.
But she was holding a newborn.
Daniel’s breath stopped.
His father whispered:
“That is your real mother.”
Daniel stared.
“But who was the woman I knew?”
His father answered:
“Her daughter.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“Then who is the baby?”
The woman looked directly at Daniel.
The newborn opened its eyes.
And the baby spoke:
“I’m you.”
Daniel stepped backward.
The memory shattered.
The future city vanished.
The cemetery vanished.
Silas vanished.
His father vanished.
Daniel found himself standing alone in complete darkness.
Then a final message appeared.
MEMORY RECOVERY: 100%.
Daniel waited.
Another message appeared.
SUBJECT ZERO IDENTIFIED.
Then:
SUBJECT ZERO IS NOT DANIEL BLACKWOOD.
Daniel froze.
A final line appeared.
SUBJECT ZERO IS SILAS.
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
And somewhere behind him—
Silas whispered:
“Dad…”
Daniel turned.
Nobody was there.
Only a newborn crying in the darkness.
And this time—
Daniel recognized the voice.
It was his own.
