PART 12: – I never told my sister that I owned half of the land in this city. When I returned from the army, my daughter was forced to sleep in a pig pen, humiliated, and told, “You are a useless burden.”

PART 12 — THE BROTHER THEY ERASED

The boy stood at the bottom of the stairs.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Even the alarms had stopped.
For several seconds, the entire underground city seemed frozen around them.
Elias stared at the child.
The boy stared back.
There was something about his face.
Something painfully familiar.
The shape of his eyes.
The slight tilt of his head.
Even the way he stood with his hands at his sides.
Elias had seen that expression before.
In photographs.
In mirrors.
In his own childhood memories.
But that was impossible.
He looked at Lily.
She was trembling.
“Daddy…”
“I’m here.”
“That’s him.”
“Who?”

She pointed at the boy.

“The boy from my memories.”

Elias slowly looked back.

The boy smiled.

“You finally remembered me.”

Elias raised his weapon.

“Don’t come any closer.”

The boy stopped.

“I knew you’d say that.”

“How do you know me?”

“Because I’ve been watching you.”

“From where?”

The boy pointed behind him.

“From everywhere.”

Michael stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The boy looked at him.

“Michael Hale.”

Michael’s expression changed.

“How do you know my name?”

“You’ve been here before.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Michael shook his head.

“I’ve never seen this place.”

The boy smiled.

“You don’t remember.”

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“What did they do to us?”

The boy’s smile disappeared.

“They didn’t do anything to you.”

He looked toward Elias.

“They did it to him.”

Elias felt a cold sensation move through his chest.

“What are you talking about?”

The boy slowly walked up the stairs.

“I’ll show you.”

THE ROOM BENEATH THE ROOM

The boy led them through a narrow passage.

The walls were covered with names.

Thousands of them.

Some were crossed out.

Some were burned.

Others were circled in red.

Elias recognized several.

Politicians.

Military commanders.

Judges.

Businessmen.

People who had appeared in his father’s files.

People who had controlled Ravenwood.

People who had disappeared over the years.

Sarah stopped suddenly.

Her eyes landed on one name.

“That’s impossible.”

Elias turned.

“What?”

Sarah pointed.

SARAH THORNE

Beside her name was another.

STATUS: ACTIVE

Sarah stepped backward.

“But they told me I was dead.”

Michael looked at the wall.

“Who told you?”

Sarah whispered:

“The Founders.”

The boy kept walking.

Elias followed.

“You said you were watching me.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Since before you were born.”

Elias stopped.

The boy turned.

“You’ve been asking the wrong question.”

“What question should I ask?”

The boy looked at Lily.

“You should ask why she remembers me.”

Lily stared at him.

“I don’t know your name.”

“You knew it once.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“When we were children.”

Elias’s heart pounded.

“You two knew each other?”

Lily looked confused.

“I don’t remember.”

The boy walked closer.

“You were three.”

“I wasn’t even here.”

“You were.”

He touched his chest.

“So was I.”

Lily suddenly grabbed her head.

A sharp pain crossed her face.

“Lily?”

She screamed.

And then—

the room disappeared.

LILY’S MEMORY

Lily was standing in a white room.

She was small.

Very small.

Maybe three years old.

Across from her stood the boy.

But he wasn’t ten.

He was only five.

They were sitting on the floor.

A woman knelt beside them.

Mara.

Lily watched the memory.

Mara held a small metal box.

“You must never open this,” Mara told the children.

The boy nodded.

Lily nodded too.

Mara looked at them.

“One day, they will come looking for you.”

The boy asked:

“Who?”

“The Founders.”

“Why?”

“Because you remember.”

Lily looked at the boy.

“Remember what?”

Mara’s expression became sad.

“Everything.”

The memory changed.

A man entered the room.

Elias’s father.

He looked younger.

Angrier.

He grabbed the boy by the arm.

Mara stood.

“Don’t.”

“He knows too much.”

“He’s a child.”

“He is a threat.”

Lily started crying.

The boy struggled.

“Don’t let him take me!”

Mara grabbed Elias’s father.

“Please.”

He pushed her away.

Then he looked at Lily.

“Forget him.”

Lily shook her head.

“I won’t.”

The man crouched beside her.

“If you remember him, they will kill you.”

Lily cried harder.

“Who is he?”

The man whispered:

“Your brother.”

The memory shattered.

THE BROTHER

Lily opened her eyes.

She was back in the underground corridor.

Elias was holding her.

She was crying.

“Daddy…”

“What happened?”

She looked at the boy.

“He’s my brother.”

Everyone froze.

Elias looked at the boy.

“Who are you?”

The boy answered quietly.

“My name is Noah.”

Sarah’s face went pale.

“Noah…”

Elias looked at her.

“You know him?”

Sarah nodded.

“I thought he was dead.”

Noah smiled.

“Everyone thought that.”

Elias looked between them.

“Why did you hide him?”

Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t.”

“Then who did?”

Sarah looked toward Mara’s chamber.

“Mara.”

Elias turned toward the glass.

“Mara!”

Mara didn’t answer.

“Mara!”

She finally looked at him.

Her face was devastated.

“I had no choice.”

“You knew about Noah?”

“Yes.”

“You knew Lily had a brother?”

“Yes.”

“You knew he was alive?”

Mara closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Elias felt betrayed.

“All this time?”

Mara whispered:

“I was trying to keep both of them alive.”

Elias stepped toward the chamber.

“You let me believe I was losing my mind.”

“I had to.”

“You let me believe Lily was my daughter.”

“She is.”

“Then why hide Noah?”

Mara looked at Lily.

“Because Noah was the first one they found.”

SUBJECT ZERO

The room suddenly shook.

A deep vibration traveled through the floor.

The screens activated.

A message appeared.

SUBJECT ZERO — RECOVERED

Then another.

SUBJECT ZERO — TWO IDENTITIES DETECTED

Elias stared.

“No.”

The screen changed.

ORIGINAL CARRIER: NOAH

SECONDARY CARRIER: ELIAS

FINAL CARRIER: LILY

Elias felt dizzy.

“So it wasn’t a bloodline.”

Noah shook his head.

“It was a chain.”

Elias looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Noah walked toward the screen.

“They needed someone to carry the memories.”

“Why?”

“To hide them.”

“From whom?”

“The Founders.”

Michael stared at the screen.

“What memories?”

Noah looked at him.

“The memories of their crimes.”

Sarah whispered:

“And the names of everyone they killed.”

Noah nodded.

“They thought destroying the witnesses would destroy the evidence.”

Elias suddenly understood.

“But they couldn’t destroy the memories.”

“No.”

“So they put them inside children.”

Noah looked at Lily.

“Yes.”

Lily whispered:

“And then they tried to erase us.”

THE FIRST BETRAYAL

Mara’s voice came through the speaker.

“They didn’t create the children.”

Everyone looked toward her.

Mara continued:

“They found them.”

Elias frowned.

“What?”

“The children were born naturally.”

Noah looked at Mara.

“You told me I was created.”

“I lied.”

“Why?”

“To keep you alive.”

Noah looked angry.

“You always say that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“You kept me alive because you needed me.”

Mara went silent.

Noah stepped closer to the glass.

“You used me.”

“I protected you.”

“You erased my childhood.”

“I saved your life.”

“You made me forget my sister.”

“I had to.”

Noah turned toward Lily.

“She forgot me.”

Lily whispered:

“I didn’t want to.”

“I know.”

Tears filled his eyes.

“I remembered you every day.”

Lily stepped forward.

“So did I.”

“No.”

She looked confused.

“I did.”

“You remembered the feeling.”

Noah touched his chest.

“Not me.”

Lily began crying.

“I’m sorry.”

Noah smiled.

“You don’t have to be.”

Then he looked at Elias.

“But you do.”

Elias froze.

“Why?”

Noah’s expression became cold.

“Because you were the one who erased us.”

THE MEMORY OF ELIAS

Elias stepped backward.

“I never did that.”

Noah shook his head.

“You did.”

“I was a child.”

“You were older than me.”

“I don’t remember.”

“Exactly.”

Noah walked toward him.

“You were Subject Zero.”

Elias shook his head.

“No. You were.”

“I was Subject Zero-One.”

“What?”

“You were Subject Zero-Two.”

Lily whispered:

“And I was Zero-Three.”

Noah nodded.

“The Founders called us numbers because they didn’t want us to have names.”

Elias stared at him.

“Then why did they need me?”

Noah answered:

“Because you could erase memories.”

Silence.

Michael lowered his weapon.

“That wasn’t in any file.”

“It wouldn’t be.”

Elias shook his head.

“I can’t erase memories.”

Noah stared at him.

“You already did.”

Elias suddenly remembered something.

A white room.

A child crying.

His own hands pressed against a boy’s head.

A voice telling him:

“Forget him.”

Elias gasped.

“No…”

Another memory appeared.

Lily.

A little girl.

Crying.

Elias kneeling beside her.

A machine beside them.

Someone saying:

“Erase everything.”

Elias stumbled backward.

“No.”

Sarah grabbed his arm.

“What did you see?”

Elias stared at her.

“I remember.”

“What?”

“I remember Noah.”

Noah’s face tightened.

“And?”

Elias looked at Lily.

“I remember erasing her memory too.”

Lily started crying.

“You…”

“I didn’t know.”

“You forgot me.”

“I was a child.”

“You forgot me.”

Elias fell to his knees.

“I’m sorry.”

Lily stood frozen.

Then she walked toward him.

She placed her small hand on his shoulder.

“You didn’t forget me.”

Elias looked up.

“You forgot the memory.”

Lily wiped her tears.

“But you never forgot me.”

THE FOUNDERS ARRIVE

A massive explosion shook the facility.

The ceiling cracked.

Dust fell.

Michael immediately raised his weapon.

“We need to move.”

Noah looked toward the entrance.

“They’re here.”

Sarah asked:

“Who?”

Noah answered:

“The Founders.”

The lights turned red.

Metal shutters began closing throughout the underground city.

Mara shouted:

“Elias!”

He looked at her.

“You have to leave!”

“Not without you.”

“You can’t save me.”

“I can try.”

Mara shook her head.

“Listen to me.”

Elias stepped toward the chamber.

“I spent my whole life thinking you were dead.”

“I know.”

“I spent years hating you.”

“I know.”

“I thought my father betrayed you.”

Mara’s eyes filled with tears.

“He did.”

Elias stopped.

“What?”

Mara looked toward Adrian.

Then toward the man who claimed to be Elias’s father.

“He betrayed all of us.”

The man smiled.

“You still blame me.”

Mara answered:

“Because you deserve it.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Mara looked at him.

“You’re still afraid of the truth.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“I’m afraid of what happens when Elias remembers everything.”

Elias turned.

“Everything about what?”

Adrian said nothing.

Noah whispered:

“The war.”

Elias looked at him.

“What war?”

Noah answered:

“The war between the Founders and the Thorne family.”

Sarah corrected him.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“It wasn’t a war.”

She swallowed.

“It was a massacre.”

THE THORNE MASSACRE

The walls suddenly became screens.

Images appeared.

A mansion burning.

People running.

Soldiers entering.

Children hiding.

A woman screaming.

A young Mara carrying a baby.

Elias recognized the baby.

Himself.

Then another image.

A little boy being dragged away.

Noah.

Then Lily.

Three children.

Three carriers.

One family.

But something was wrong.

The images showed Mara handing the children to different people.

Noah to one soldier.

Elias to another.

Lily to Amelia.

Sarah watched silently.

Elias turned toward her.

“You were there.”

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.”

“You helped them.”

“Yes.”

“You separated us.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always say that.”

Sarah began crying.

“Because it was true.”

Elias stepped toward her.

“Who ordered it?”

Sarah looked at Adrian.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Elias followed her gaze.

“Grandfather?”

Adrian said nothing.

Elias raised his gun.

“You ordered them to separate us?”

Adrian finally answered.

“Yes.”

Lily looked horrified.

“Why?”

Adrian looked at her.

“Because if the three of you stayed together…”

He paused.

“…the Founders would never have been able to control you.”

Noah whispered:

“So you separated us to protect us.”

Adrian nodded.

“But you lied.”

“Yes.”

“You erased our memories.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed our family.”

Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Elias’s voice shook.

“Why?”

Adrian looked at the three children.

“Because your family wasn’t the target.”

He pointed toward the walls.

“The world was.”

THE FINAL ARCHIVE

Suddenly the entire facility went silent.

A voice spoke.

Not Mara.

Not Adrian.

Not Noah.

Not the Founders.

A child’s voice.

Lily’s voice.

But older.

Much older.

“Elias.”

He turned.

The voice continued.

“Come to the final room.”

Lily looked terrified.

“That isn’t me.”

Noah shook his head.

“It isn’t.”

Elias asked:

“Then who is it?”

Noah looked at the deepest tunnel.

“The original memory.”

A door opened.

Beyond it was darkness.

On the door were three words:

ONE FAMILY. ONE MEMORY.

Elias stepped forward.

Mara shouted:

“Don’t open it!”

Elias stopped.

“Why?”

Mara whispered:

“Because once you open that door…”

She looked at Noah.

“…you will remember who betrayed your mother.”

Elias turned toward Adrian.

Adrian looked away.

Then toward the man who claimed to be his father.

The man smiled.

And then toward Lily.

Lily suddenly spoke.

“I know who it was.”

Everyone froze.

Elias looked at her.

“Who?”

Lily’s eyes were no longer frightened.

They were strangely calm.

She pointed toward Mara.

“Mama.”

Mara’s face went white.

Elias stared.

“What?”

Lily whispered:

“She betrayed us.”

Mara shook her head violently.

“No.”

Lily stepped backward.

“She gave us to them.”

“No!”

“She told them where we were.”

“I was trying to save you!”

“You lied.”

Mara pressed her hands against the glass.

“Lily, please.”

Lily began crying.

“I remember now.”

The entire facility shook.

Every screen activated.

A single sentence appeared.

MARA THORNE WAS THE FIRST FOUNDER.

Elias stared.

Mara closed her eyes.

Noah whispered:

“It’s true.”

Elias looked at Mara.

“You were one of them.”

Mara opened her eyes.

“I was.”

Elias felt his world collapse.

“But then…”

Mara whispered:

“I betrayed them.”

“Why?”

She looked at Lily.

“Because I realized what they planned to do with you.”

Elias stared.

“What did they plan?”

Mara didn’t answer.

The speakers crackled.

A man’s voice came through.

Cold.

Emotionless.

The voice of the Founders.

“Now you understand.”

Every door in the underground city locked simultaneously.

“Your mother betrayed us.”

Elias raised his weapon.

The voice continued:

“She tried to save the children.”

A pause.

“She failed.”

Then the final sentence echoed through the underground city.

“And now, Elias, you must decide which of your children will survive.”

Lily looked at Noah.

Noah looked at Lily.

Elias stepped between them.

“No.”

The voice laughed.

“You still don’t understand.”

A timer appeared on every screen.

09:59

09:58

09:57

Elias looked around.

“What happens at zero?”

Mara whispered:

“The archive opens.”

Michael asked:

“And then?”

Mara’s face became pale.

“Every memory inside this facility will be released.”

Sarah frowned.

“That’s good, isn’t it?”

Mara shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because the archive doesn’t only contain memories.”

She looked at Elias.

“It contains identities.”

Elias stared.

“What does that mean?”

Mara whispered:

“When the archive opens…”

The timer reached:

09:31

Mara continued:

“…everyone whose memory is stored here will wake up.”

Noah looked toward the thousands of chambers.

“You mean…”

Mara nodded.

“The dead.”

A sound came from the darkness.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

Glass chambers began opening.

One.

Two.

Five.

Twenty.

Dozens.

Children stepped out.

Men.

Women.

Soldiers.

Scientists.

People who had supposedly died years ago.

Elias stared in horror.

The underground city was filling with people.

People who should not exist.

Lily grabbed his hand.

“Daddy.”

Elias looked at her.

“What?”

She pointed toward the crowd.

“Look.”

At the far end of the chamber stood a woman.

Elias recognized her immediately.

The woman from the oldest photograph.

The woman everyone said had died before Elias could remember her.

His biological mother.

Mara’s face went white.

“No…”

The woman smiled.

“Hello, Elias.”

Elias couldn’t move.

The woman walked forward.

Behind her stood another figure.

A man.

Elias recognized him too.

The man who had supposedly been his father.

But this time there was no doubt.

The woman took Elias’s hand.

And whispered:

“You were never my only child.”

Elias looked at her.

“What?”

She pointed toward the crowd.

“There are three of you.”

Noah stepped forward.

Lily stared.

And then—

a third child emerged from the darkness.

A girl.

She looked exactly like Lily.

Same face.

Same eyes.

Same scar.

She stopped beside the woman.

Then looked directly at Elias.

“Daddy…”

Lily’s hand slipped from his.

She stared at the girl.

Her voice trembled.

“That…”

She swallowed.

“…is me.”

The girl smiled.

“No.”

She pointed at Lily.

“She is me.”

The lights went out.

And somewhere in the darkness, the Founders whispered:

“Let the final memory begin.”
