PART 3 — THE DOOR WAS ALREADY OPEN
Derek pushed the door open.
He expected noise.
He expected shouting.
He expected the sound of a television, footsteps, anything.
Instead, the house was completely silent.
Not peaceful.
Silent.
The kind of silence that made every instinct in his body tell him something was wrong.
“Derek?”
Michael’s voice came through the phone.
Derek didn’t answer immediately.
He stood just inside the doorway, listening.
The front door had been unlocked.
That was the first thing that bothered him.
Michael never left it unlocked during the day.
And Lena usually locked it behind her.
Derek slowly stepped inside.
“Noah?”
Nothing.
He tried again.
“Noah, buddy? It’s Uncle Derek.”
A faint sound came from somewhere deeper in the house.
A sniffle.
Derek’s entire expression changed.
“Noah?”
This time, the little boy answered.
“Uncle Derek…”
Derek moved toward the sound.
“I’m here.”
“Uncle Derek…”
The voice was tiny.
Terrified.
“Come to me, buddy.”
“I can’t.”
Derek stopped.
“Why?”
A long pause.
Then Noah whispered:
“He said I can’t leave my room.”
Derek looked down the hallway.
His jaw tightened.
“Who said that?”
Noah didn’t answer.
Derek took one step forward.
Then another.
“It’s okay,” he said gently. “It’s Uncle Derek. Your dad sent me.”
A small sob came from behind a closed bedroom door.
“Daddy?”
“Yeah.”
“Daddy’s coming?”
“He’s on his way.”
Derek glanced toward the living room.
Something was wrong.
He could feel it.
“Where’s Travis?” he asked.
Noah became completely silent.
“Buddy?”
Nothing.
Derek lowered his voice.
“You don’t have to talk about anything you don’t want to talk about. Just tell me where you are.”
“My room.”
“Okay.”
Derek approached the door.
It wasn’t locked.
He slowly pushed it open.
And there was Noah.
Curled against the side of his bed.
His little face was wet with tears.
One arm was held tightly against his chest.
Derek froze for half a second.
Not because he didn’t know what to do.
Because seeing Noah like that made every adult instinct inside him scream.
He wanted to grab the child.
He wanted to demand answers.
He wanted to find Travis.
But he remembered the dispatcher.
He remembered Michael’s voice.
Get to Noah.
Not revenge.
Not anger.
Noah.
Derek crouched several feet away.
“Hey, buddy.”
Noah looked at him.
For one second, the little boy didn’t move.
Then he crawled toward him.
Derek opened his arms.
Noah crashed into him.
And Derek caught him.
“Uncle Derek…”
“I’ve got you.”
“He’s gonna come back.”
“Who?”
“Travis.”
Derek looked toward the hallway.
“Where is he?”
Noah buried his face against Derek’s chest.
“He went downstairs.”
Derek’s eyes narrowed.
“Did he say where he was going?”
Noah shook his head.
“He said he was gonna make Daddy sorry.”
Derek went completely still.
Michael was still listening through the phone.
“Derek?”
Derek finally answered.
“I’ve got him.”
Michael exhaled so hard it almost sounded like a sob.
“Is he hurt?”
Derek looked at Noah.
“Yeah.”
“How bad?”
“I don’t know yet.”
Michael’s voice cracked.
“Put him on the phone.”
Derek handed Noah the phone.
Noah grabbed it with his good hand.
“Daddy?”
“I’m here, buddy.”
“Daddy…”
“I’m coming.”
“Are you mad?”
Michael swallowed.
“I’m not mad at you.”
“No.”
“Buddy, listen to me. None of this is your fault.”
Noah began crying again.
“I didn’t do anything.”
“I know.”
“I was good.”
“I know you were.”
“I didn’t make him mad.”
Michael’s grip tightened around the steering wheel.
“You didn’t make him do anything. Do you hear me?”
Noah nodded even though his father couldn’t see him.
“I love you.”
“I love you too, Daddy.”
Derek took the phone back.
“Michael.”
“Yeah?”
“Officers should be there soon.”
“I know.”
Derek looked toward the hallway.
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“The front door was unlocked.”
Michael went quiet.
Then he said:
“What do you mean?”
“It was already open when I got here.”
“Maybe Lena forgot.”
“Maybe.”
Derek didn’t sound convinced.
“Did you call Lena?”
“Her phone goes straight to voicemail.”
Derek stared toward the staircase.
“Michael…”
“What?”
“I think we need to find out where she is.”
Before Michael could answer, Derek heard something.
A sound.
From downstairs.
Three slow knocks.
Derek’s head turned.
Noah stopped crying.
“Uncle Derek?”
Derek held up one finger.
“Stay right here.”
“No.”
“Buddy, I need you to stay here.”
“No.”
Noah grabbed Derek’s shirt.
“Don’t leave me.”
Derek looked down at him.
The fear in Noah’s eyes immediately changed his decision.
“Okay.”
He sat down beside the boy.
“We stay together.”
Another sound came from downstairs.
This time it wasn’t knocking.
It was something scraping across the floor.
Derek stared at the hallway.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message from Michael.
POLICE ARE TWO MINUTES OUT.
Derek typed back:
GOOD.
He hesitated.
Then sent another message.
SOMETHING IS WRONG.
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Michael was typing.
Before he could answer, Derek heard a voice from downstairs.
“Derek.”
Derek’s blood ran cold.
It was Travis.
“Derek, right?”
Derek didn’t respond.
Noah squeezed his hand.
“Uncle Derek…”
“I’ve got you.”
Travis called again.
“You don’t want to make this worse.”
Derek stared at the doorway.
His voice remained calm.
“I don’t want anything.”
A short laugh came from downstairs.
“You came here looking for trouble.”
“No.”
Derek glanced at Noah.
“I came here for my nephew.”
“You should leave.”
Derek said nothing.
“Take the kid and go.”
Derek’s eyes narrowed.
Then Travis said something that made Derek’s stomach drop.
“Because you don’t know what happened before you got here.”
Derek stared at the hallway.
“What does that mean?”
Silence.
Then:
“Ask Lena.”
Derek immediately called Michael.
“Michael.”
“Yeah?”
“Travis is here.”
“What?”
“He’s downstairs.”
Michael’s breathing changed.
“Is Noah with you?”
“Yes.”
“Don’t confront him.”
“I won’t.”
“Derek, I’m serious.”
“I know.”
“Get outside if you can.”
Derek looked at the hallway.
Then at Noah.
The bedroom window was too high for Noah to safely climb out.
The hallway was the only obvious route.
And Travis was somewhere downstairs.
Then came another sound.
The front door.
It slammed shut.
Derek looked toward the bedroom entrance.
“He just locked the door.”
Michael said:
“What?”
“The front door.”
Derek stood.
“Noah, stay behind me.”
“Uncle Derek…”
“Don’t worry.”
Derek walked toward the hallway.
“Derek!”
“I need to see if there’s another way out.”
“You heard the dispatcher. Don’t engage.”
“I know.”
Derek reached the hallway.
He looked downstairs.
Nothing.
No movement.
No Travis.
Then he noticed something.
A baseball bat.
It was lying on the floor near the bottom step.
Derek’s eyes fixed on it.
There was a dark mark near the handle.
He didn’t touch it.
He didn’t need to.
He already knew what it was.
Behind him, Noah whispered:
“That’s the bat.”
Derek slowly turned.
“You’ve seen it?”
Noah nodded.
“He hit me with it.”
Derek closed his eyes for a moment.
Then he heard footsteps.
Not from downstairs.
From behind him.
Derek turned sharply.
No one was there.
He looked back at Noah.
The little boy was still sitting on the bed.
“Did you hear that?”
Noah nodded.
“Mom.”
Derek froze.
“What?”
“Mom was upstairs.”
“When?”
“Before Travis hit me.”
Derek crouched.
“Noah, buddy, look at me.”
Noah looked directly into his eyes.
“Where did your mom go?”
“She left.”
“When?”
“After she heard me crying.”
Derek’s face hardened.
“Your mom heard you?”
Noah nodded.
“She told Travis to stop.”
Derek’s stomach tightened.
“What happened?”
“He yelled at her.”
“What did she do?”
“She went outside.”
Derek stared at him.
“Are you sure?”
Noah nodded.
Then he whispered:
“But she came back.”
Derek’s eyes widened.
“She came back?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“After Travis went downstairs.”
Derek stood.
“Where is she now?”
Noah pointed.
“Her room.”
Derek looked toward the master bedroom.
The door was closed.
He hadn’t checked it.
Michael was still on the phone.
“You heard that?”
“Yes,” Michael answered.
“Derek…”
“I know.”
“Don’t go in there.”
Derek didn’t answer.
He stared at the closed bedroom door.
Something about the entire house was beginning to feel wrong.
Not just dangerous.
Staged.
He looked back at Noah.
“Stay here.”
Noah shook his head.
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“I know where Mom is.”
Derek hesitated.
Then a police siren sounded outside.
Both of them heard it.
Noah’s eyes widened.
“Daddy?”
“Your dad is almost here.”
Derek walked toward the bedroom door.
“Derek,” Michael said.
“I’ll wait for the police.”
Derek stopped.
For the first time since entering the house, he stepped backward.
He didn’t touch the door.
He didn’t open it.
He waited.
Seconds later, pounding shook the front entrance.
“POLICE! OPEN THE DOOR!”
Derek looked toward the stairs.
No response.
“POLICE! OPEN THE DOOR!”
Derek shouted:
“There’s a child inside!”
Immediately, the pounding intensified.
“STEP AWAY FROM THE DOOR!”
Derek moved back.
Noah clung to his leg.
Then came the sound of the front door being forced open.
Multiple officers rushed inside.
“WHERE’S THE CHILD?”
“Upstairs!”
“ANYONE ELSE INSIDE?”
“Travis is somewhere downstairs!”
The officers moved.
Derek pointed toward the staircase.
“He may still be here.”
One officer moved toward Noah.
“Is this your son?”
“No,” Derek said. “He’s my nephew.”
The officer crouched.
“What’s your name, buddy?”
Noah whispered:
“Noah.”
“You’re safe now, Noah.”
Noah looked past him.
“Mom is in her room.”
The officer’s expression changed.
“Where?”
Derek pointed.
“Master bedroom.”
Two officers moved toward it.
Another headed downstairs.
Then everything happened at once.
A shout from downstairs.
“POLICE! DON’T MOVE!”
A crash.
Footsteps.
Someone yelled.
Derek instinctively moved toward Noah.
“Stay with me.”
The bedroom door opened.
The officer standing there suddenly stopped.
“Sir…”
Derek looked at him.
“What?”
The officer turned toward the hallway.
“There’s no one in here.”
Derek stared.
“What?”
The officer stepped aside.
The master bedroom was empty.
Completely empty.
The bed was made.
The closet was open.
The bathroom was empty.
No Lena.
Derek looked at Noah.
“But he said she was here.”
Noah stared into the room.
His face changed.
Then he whispered:
“She wasn’t in the room.”
Derek crouched.
“What?”
Noah pointed toward the closet.
“She was behind there.”
The officer looked at the closet.
He opened it.
Clothes.
Boxes.
Nothing else.
Then Noah said:
“She went through the little door.”
Everyone stopped.
“What little door?” Derek asked.
Noah pointed toward the back wall.
Hidden behind a hanging row of clothes was a narrow wooden panel.
Derek had lived in the house before.
He had never seen it.
The officer pulled the clothes aside.
There was a small door.
Old.
Painted the same color as the wall.
Almost invisible.
The officer tried the handle.
Locked.
Derek stared at it.
“Where does that go?”
Noah answered before anyone else could.
“To the garage.”
Derek’s face went pale.
“The garage?”
Noah nodded.
“Mom told me never to open it.”
One officer immediately called downstairs.
“Check the garage.”
Static.
Then:
“Garage is empty.”
Derek stared at the hidden door.
Something wasn’t adding up.
If Lena had gone through there…
Why?
And why had she left Noah behind?
Then an officer came running up the stairs.
“Sir.”
Derek turned.
“What?”
“We found Travis.”
“Where?”
“He was hiding in the basement.”
“Is he arrested?”
“Yes.”
Derek exhaled.
For the first time since entering the house, his shoulders dropped slightly.
Then the officer added:
“But there’s a problem.”
Derek’s expression changed.
“What problem?”
The officer looked toward Noah.
“Travis keeps saying he didn’t hit the boy.”
Derek stared at him.
“What?”
“He says someone else did.”
Derek shook his head.
“Noah identified him.”
“I know.”
“He said Travis hit him.”
“I know.”
“Then what is he talking about?”
The officer didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he said:
“Travis says there was another man in the house.”
Derek’s eyes narrowed.
“Another man?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“He says he doesn’t know.”
Derek looked at Noah.
The little boy had gone completely quiet.
“Buddy?”
Noah wouldn’t look at him.
Derek crouched.
“Noah.”
Slowly, Noah raised his eyes.
“Was there another man here?”
Noah nodded.
Derek’s heart sank.
“Who?”
Noah’s lips trembled.
“He came when Mom left.”
“Do you know him?”
Another nod.
Derek looked at the officers.
“Who is he?”
Noah whispered a name.
So quietly that Derek almost didn’t hear it.
“What did you say?”
Noah repeated it.
And this time Derek heard every word.
The name made his face go completely blank.
Because Derek knew that name.
Michael knew that name too.
And if Noah was telling the truth…
Then this wasn’t just a case of Travis losing his temper.
It had started long before Michael received that phone call.
And someone had been planning something.
Something involving Noah.
Something involving Lena.
And possibly Michael himself.
Outside, another police vehicle pulled up.
Michael had finally arrived.
He jumped out before his car had fully stopped.
He ran toward the house.
The moment he saw Derek standing in the doorway, he shouted:
“WHERE’S MY SON?”
Derek pointed upstairs.
“He’s safe.”
Michael ran inside.
“NOAH!”
“Daddy!”
The little boy ran toward him.
Michael dropped to his knees and pulled him close.
He didn’t care about anything else.
Not the police.
Not the house.
Not Travis.
Not the questions.
He held Noah like he was afraid the world might take him away again.
“I’ve got you,” Michael whispered.
Noah buried his face against him.
“Daddy…”
“I’m here.”
“Daddy, I’m sorry.”
Michael pulled back.
“You have nothing to be sorry for.”
“But I told him.”
“Told him what?”
Noah looked toward Derek.
Then toward the officers.
Then back at his father.
“The secret.”
Michael’s face changed.
“What secret?”
Noah whispered:
“The secret Mom told me never to tell you.”
The room went silent.
Michael slowly looked at Derek.
Derek looked back at him.
Neither brother spoke.
Then Noah reached into the pocket of his little pajamas.
He pulled out a folded piece of paper.
Michael stared at it.
“What’s that?”
Noah held it out.
“Mom gave it to me.”
Michael took it.
His fingers trembled as he unfolded the paper.
There were only six words written on it.
Six words that made Michael’s entire world stop.
DON’T TRUST ANYONE IN THIS HOUSE.
Michael read it again.
Then again.
And underneath those words was something else.
A date.
Tomorrow’s date.
And a time.
2:30 PM.
Michael looked at the clock.
It was already 2:29.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
Lena.
Alive.
Calm.
And holding a phone in her hand.
She looked directly at Michael.
Then at Noah.
Then at Derek.
And finally at the police.
She smiled faintly.
“I’m glad you’re all here.”
Michael stood.
“Where the hell have you been?”
Lena didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at the clock.
2:30 PM.
Then she said:
“It’s time.”
And every phone in the room buzzed at exactly the same moment.
Including Michael’s.
He looked down.
One new message.
No number.
No name.
Just a single sentence:
YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND NOAH FIRST.
Michael slowly raised his eyes.
Lena was no longer smiling.
And somewhere downstairs, Travis began screaming.
“GET OUT!”
“GET OUT OF THIS HOUSE!”
“HE’S COMING BACK!”
The officers rushed toward the basement.
Derek grabbed Noah.
Michael stared at Lena.
“What did you do?”
Lena’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t do this.”
“Then who did?”
She looked toward the basement.
And whispered:
“He did.”
Michael followed her gaze.
“Who?”
Lena swallowed.
“The man Noah just told your brother about.”
Michael’s face went pale.
Because there was only one person Noah could have meant.
And that person had been dead for three years.
